By his own words, fixing our health care system has been one of the most important goals President Barack Obama has targeted since he announced his run for the presidency.
And in this week's address to the nation, the president provided a few more details to his outline to reform health care for Americans without adding to the federal deficit.
Obama claims that it will cost $635 billion as a down payment to fund the reform plan. He says $300 billion will come from savings generated by reducing Medicare overpayments to private insurers and eliminating waste in Medicare and Medicaid.
The problem with those figures is that they are in dispute. Depending on which Washington D.C. think-tank you listen to, the amount of savings to be derived from the trimming of fraud and waste varies wildly.
There is no doubt that new and creative ways are needed to fund health care reform.
I have a suggestion that came into clear focus last week by the sights I took in walking through the downtown restaurant complex in Silver Spring, Md. about 10 miles from the nation's capitol. There, hundreds of people mingled while kids played in an outdoor fountain. And obesity reigned.
It seemed like at least every other people walking about was not just a tad overweight but HUGE. Young kids, teens, adults, black, white, Hispanic, men, women - many of them looking like they were the winners of pie-eating contests.
Silver Spring isn't alone. Just check the figures on widespread obesity in America.
My idea isn't new, but I think it has some merit. Why not put a special tax on unhealthful foods that do nothing but add inches to waistlines and contribute to the rising costs we all have to pay for health care?
There will be some snags in creating such a tax. For instance, would a Big Mac sandwich qualify for the tax? Some supporters would argue that such sandwiches do include items from the basic food groups and should be exempt. Others would point to the high amounts of fat and sodium as the reason they should be taxed.
All I know is if we are going to get serious about fixing health care, we need new funding streams to make it happen. Let the fat cats pay for it, because obesity costs us all.

Ditto! Yes, I smoke. I'd qualify that statement by pointing out that I smoke moderately -- under 1/2 pack a day -- but the degree of the habit doesn't seem to matter anymore. If a person smokes, he or she is widely considered to be a nasty addict with a death wish. But I don't eat a lot of junk food, fast food, or processed food; I don't drink alcohol; my weight is fine; and I don't smoke around non-smokers, including, of course, children. My husband and I would quit smoking entirely if we could; we've struggled to kick the habit for years. So, yeah, bring on a "junk food tax." About time other addicts joined the smokers and alcohol drinkers in funding health care.

YES. PLEASE. It should be taxed like cigarettes. It's more deadly and there's no dispute that they target children. Its time has passed. Maybe then we can go back to farming methods that aren't destroying the planet and making everyone sick.

A four cylinder gasoline burning engine running down the road at 60 mph for ten minutes is equal to the carcinagens and carbon monoxide of 20 cartons of cigarettes. And it goes directly into the air that I *have* to breath! That would be twice the amount for an 8 cylinder automobile. Multiply that by hundreds of thousands of automobils on the road and in a 24 hr. period. Not to mention all the factories emmiting the exact same output of carcenogens and carbon monoxide. And don't forget about all those cargo container ships coming from and going to china back and forth like a big ocean 4-lane interstate. Each one of them like a floating factory pumping the atmosphere chock full of carcenogens and carbon monoxide. Every bit of that fall out settles out across the U.S. It's no wonder so many non-smokers are dying of lung cancer.

Demasquatch, it's not your cars, trucks, lawnmowers and ships that are spewing rocket fuel into our water and carcinogens into our air. It is DuPont, ConAgra, Monsanto and the majority of billion dollar industries that have for "some reason" been immune to detrimental environmental impacts. Ever see one of their plants? There is no visibility in a 10 mile radius of them because of the emissions they spew into our air. Are you familiar with the pesticides they're using on the genetically engineered crops in the Midwest?
How about the rocket fuel in our water? That doesn't come from planes, trucks, cars, boats or trains. Seen the shuttle take off lately?
How about the arsenic that's in all our systems? Ever wonder how that got there?
Start educating yourselves, my friends, then do something about it.
It is the complacency of this Nation that is allowing this to all happen. We let it, simply out of ignorance and trust.

Lets see:
Government ran Social Security and it's almost broke.
Government ran public education and it's failing all over the map.
Government ran rescue and recover i.e. Hurricane Katrina still a disaster and all kinds of graft.
Government ran Americore, well that all messed up.
Government ran DMV. You know the deal, you've been there.
Government ran Food Stamps and people still going hungry in the US.
Government ran unemployment system and no one can find a job.
Government ran Highways, roads and bridges. Falling apart and just plain falling.
Government ran judicial system and how many it estimated that are innocent in prison? Too Many.
Government ran court appointed attorneys, falling asleep in court and over worked.
Government ran anything outside the scope set forth in the Constitution seems to be doomed to fail. The founding fathers knew what they were talking about when limiting the scope of the government's powers. Governments get too top heavy and come crashing down in the people it's meant to serve. "Health care will be no different." Say No today and let's limit Government to it's role outlined in the Constitution and quit making up stuff up it doesn't say.

Ditto- a Gov run bake sale (all donated items) would be in the red-eaten up by the administration of said sale. 3/4 of the 47mil uninsured are thus by choice--not enrolling in programs for which they qualify-Gov and private. Mr. O uses fuzzy math when ever it suits his purpose

Absolutely tax fast food! Obesity has overtaken cigarette smoking as the number one cause of health related issues in the United States. Your gastric bypasses, lap band and breast reduction surgeries have become the most widely performed procedures in the past two years, and it's not going to slow down in the near future, and your insurance companies pay for it, as you do.
It's understood most Americans no longer have the knowledge, willpower and understanding to care for themselves, diet wise, and that's going to take years to reverse, if at all. Time is no excuse - a lunch can easily be made in the morning to take to work, and dinner can actually be "cooked". But hey, who wants to get up early in the morning or take 30 minutes to make a meal at night (thanks Rachel Ray) right?
Obesity = heart problems, diabetes, arthritis, hypertention, on and on..... and it becoming the #1 killer over tobacco or alcohol. But Americans ignore it because nobody wants to slow down and make smart choices.
So let the Government step in and tax what's promoting that obesity and tax the wazoo out of fast food as they have done with tobacco and alcohol.
This is one change that gets a thumbs up here. You go,Obama!
