I came to the latest release of "The Transformers" looking for what I saw in the first film: Jaw-dropping special effects and a story just interesting enough to hold you over until the next explosion. I didn't go to the film looking for racism or embarrassing minstrel shows. My "racial bias glasses" are designed to weed out harmless, inadvertent racism, which comes with living in a society that spent 400 years thinking that black people were less than human. But when racism is thrown in my face repeatedly in the form of ridiculous and disgusting stereotypes, that's when I start to get mad.
Michael Bay is one of my favorite directors, next to the Hughes Brothers (where are they by the way?). He's damn good at what he does. But on this occasion, Bay simply missed his creative target and I'm not the only one who's noticing.
Meet Skids and Mudflap, two Transformers who may as well have been called Lil Wayne and Random Black Male idiot. One of them actually has a gold grill, and neither of them can read. They are bungling buffoons and cowards with barely an ounce of intelligence. One of them rides around as an Ice cream truck with the words "suck my popsicle" on the side, yelling "get your ice cream bitches" to those who might want to buy from his dirty little truck. They also remind you in every other sentence that you are a "punk ass bitch" and that they want to "bust a cap in your ass."
Now meet Optimus Prime. Optimus is a brave, principled leader who speaks with proper English and stands tall in the face of adversity. He protects the cowardly idiots in spite of the fact that they are too stupid to take care of themselves. I can't say whether Optimus is white or black, but he doesn't talk like Skids and Mudflap. His diction is perfect and he doesn't curse. He would never offer to put a "cap in your ass", and he doesn't seem to have any gold teeth. Even dressed in red, white and blue, he looks and sounds a lot like a Republican. Everyone wants to be Optimus Prime. No one wants to be Skids or Mudflap.
Every time Skids and Mudflap opened their mouths, I sank a little further down in my seat. I could almost stomach it all, until the characters backed away in fear when being asked to read. After watching how Bay used these two to provide much of the comic relief in the film, I wanted to find the screen writers, slap them one by one, and force them to take a class on historical images of blacks in media. Hollywood is home to the most sophisticated technological advancements, the most accurate marketing data, and precise, multi-year script analysis. In the face of all of this research, how could they do something so asinine? What's worse is that they absolutely ruined my favorite film by insulting me. Steven Spielberg, the Executive Producer who will also be responsible for making the Martin Luther King film, should have noticed these problems after viewing the Director's cut. Anyone marketing movies for black dollars should have greater racial sensitivity.

What this guy fails to realize is that the reason why robots are like that in the movie is because there are people walking around on this Earth, in this country that look, act, and talk just like that. Where did this gentleman grow up? Is he one of those “bougies” who didn’t grow up around “hood” people?
Also, this film is aimed at getting young people to come see it, and you know that in the movies, it’s cooler to “act black”. When “hood” movies like “Beauty Shop” or “Soul Plane” are made, no one makes these kinds of criticisms. Is it because we’re expected to act a certain way around “our own”, and not amongst others? If that was the case, no white kids would go to rap concerts.
How come no one gets all up in arms when movies make fun of Asians or Latinos? If you’re going to raise a flag only when you see one group presented in a way that you don’t like, doesn’t that make you racist?

This is a simple minded statement. Where did you get the term "Hood" movies? White people create stupid terms like this. Ask any black actor from the 50's til now, they'll tell you about how they were directed to act more like the white supremacist stereotype than using their creativity. Also, those movies were trying to tell a story of success in one and how we're being conditioned to live like animals in the other. If white supremacists show themselves as what they would like to be (actually in the vampire movies what they really are), why can't blacks show the same. Is someone brain washed? You see how white people portray themselves in HERO, MEDIUM, LIE TO ME, and other television shows and you also see the sibliminal message being sent by the lack of black roles or in the role they play. I think blacks don't understand how deep the rabbit hole goes and probably this is due to how painful it is to when you start researching. An example is this:After an elephant is tied to a stake for so long that elephant no longer needs the chains because he/she is so use to their position.

I'd probably watch the movie when it comes out on DVD, critique it, then decide if my two boys should see it. Or better yet, I'll see what the young people I know say about the movie and their take on the characterizations.
That sometimes is a better review. I do think it matters a great deal what images are put out regardless of the race of the writer or producer.
I have been in a room of black children who divided themselves according to hues. The lighter skinned children called down the dark ones. One day the "black" child as his classmates scornfully called him, showed up with violet contact lenses and asked me if I thought he was "better" looking. No, I am not kidding. This is no Toni Morrison book. I looked at the child of God and told him I like him much, much better the way he is made. I don't know what good it did. It kills me to see such crap seep into youthful minds. They just don't know any better and it is up to ADULTS who create entertainment for children to be aware that they are afterall creating for impressionable minds. They shouldn't sink to the level of children themselves. Maybe it's just a matter of the buck, but don't they have a moral guide? I'm not talking religion. Just common decency. Pride. I guess the question they should ask is, "Do I really want my own child to watch what I am putting out?" Do I? In some cases the answer may be yes...???????

This is another thing I'm tired of hearing : "When Dave Chappelle does it... When the Wayans Brothers did it..." When they did it, it was funny! They did it specifically to be funny, it was not their intention to feed a monster that had been hurting people for centuries in the hopes that it could continue its reign of terror. How many lies do you have to tell yourself to become incapable of understanding that when someone makes a joke about something that relates to themselves its more on the funny side, whereas when someone says something to ridicule someone else (especially if that ridicule is known for causing as much suffering as the issue at hand is) it has to be stopped.

I dont agree with this dudes article. I am one who does believe that racism is very prevalent, but give me a break. Point is, there are a large portion of ppl...mostly black (i will admit) that talk and act like this in our society. Thats what we depict on BET, MTV and so many other places. So if a director portrays this aspect, all of sudden he is racist or the movie is racist? Should they just ignore certain segments of our society because they are sensitive subjects? I dont think so.
Something tells me that if one of the autobots was a country hill billie white ppl would not call out racism and we would laugh our ass off at that portion of thier society, the same way they laugh at our negative stereotypes.
And why does Octumus Prime have to be a republican???? Because he "is a brave, principled leader who speaks with proper English and stands tall in the face of adversity" and is "dressed in red white and blue...doesnt have gold teeth". Is that all it takes for us to believe he isnt black or a democrat? Thats rediculous. It sounds like reverse racism in a sense that we cant see ourselves with those characteristics. I personally believe he could be black...look at our president. That was the most rediculous argument in the article!
I havent seen the movie, so i will reserve final opinion until i do. But as a ppl we should stop crying and pulling the race card every time ppl depict the large part of our culture of which some of us are no so proud. Again, give me a break. And im gone.

I like what you said....I'm white and I think red neck jokes and hill billy jokes are funny....some of my country relatives act just like the jokes. I was raised in the ciry and they laugh at me sometimes too. As for the movie, I really don't like that kind of language whether it's black or white

Why is it that just because these particular robots are buffoons we assume that they're supposed to be Black? Aside from the gold tooth, neither Skids nor Mudflap even resembled a Black person to me. With those buck teeth and Dumbo ears they look more like white dudes named Jethro. As far as the slang goes, I know white kids who say some of that same dumb s--t all the time. Calling the comic relief from Transformers ROTF racist is kind of a stretch. Folks are really reachin' with this one.

OK, where did I talk bad about whites? By saying the buck teeth and huge ears look like Jethro, or when I said some white kids use the same dumb slang? I was simply making the point that immediately assuming negative traits fit a "Black" persona is almost as ignorant as the comments the two of you just left and says more about the critics than the movie, if you ask me.
And why are you two even on a Black site if we're all a bunch of gorilla-looking crack dealers with B.O.? Shouldn't you be too afraid or disgusted to even commingle with us online? LOL.
