Most of us heard about the recent Supreme Court decision involving "reverse discrimination" against white firefighers. The case has been used to undermine President Obama's nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. It also seems to prove that the establishment is correct and those of us who argue against the 400 year legacy of racial discrimination have been hitting the crack pipe. Terms like "reverse discrimination" are regularly used to validate arguments against racial progress, and most Americans simply do not understand how racism works in America. The rest of us simply don't care. Here are some quick thoughts on the issue to help us make sense of it all. Hopefully, the Rush Limbaughs of the world are smart enough to follow along, but I should probably know better than that:
1) The term "reverse discrimation" is silly and misguided: Terms like this were designed by those who feel an entitlement to a certain degree of power in our society in order to alleviate them of the guilt of what they've done to every black man, woman and child for the past 400 years. Stop using this term, it makes you look ridiculous. It's a lot like the fat kid telling the anorexic one that he discriminated against him by taking the last cookie.
2) Racism is actually not the primary problem: The problem in America is not that whites hate blacks and want to kill us; it is that the whites who are descendants of the whites who used to kill us are not willing to acknowledge that these actions have a lasting impact on our society. When you go into most major universities, there are very few black professors (check out my campus, Syracuse University, which rarely gives tenure to African Americans, but has no trouble scouring the housing projects looking for their next Carmello Anthony). All of these disparities did not come about by accident: They came about through hundreds of years of consistent and deliberate attempts to keep African Americans in the underclass of our society. Guess what? It worked. If you want to understand America's past, you must only look at its present. The huge imbalance of power along racial lines is a modern day manifestation of all that has occured in our nation's tainted history. But white male supremacist thought teaches us that white men have most of the power and money because they are simply better than the rest of us.
3) Aretha Franklin best describes what Americans need to have in the racial dialogue: R-E-S-P-E-C-T. There is a reason that most African Americans are scared to death to speak out against racism: Because they get mobbed. They lose their jobs for speaking up, they are chastised, attacked and ridiculed. There is an effort to beat you down and shut you up for not going along with the power structure. Personally, I am not bothered when others attack me, but I was reminded of this caveman-like behavior after seeing the crazy comments that were made when I pointed out the clear use of racial stereotypes in the most recent Transformers film. I also see it every day when my colleagues at Syracuse hate me for speaking up for black people.
The point of a racial dialogue is not for you to agree with what every person of color is saying: It is to respect us when we say it. If a woman feels that her husband is mistreating her and she says, "Honey, it really hurt me when you said I was too fat," the husband has several options in response to her statement. He could yell at her and tell her why she shouldn't be offended by what he said, or he could simply say, "Look, although I don't quite understand why this offended you, I will be more careful in the future because I know that it bothers you. I do this because I care about you and want you to feel respected."
Some Americans don't always show respect when people of color speak up on issues that affect our lives. We are told that we are too sensitive, that we are crazy, and that we are making things up. But the truth is that there is glaring, overwhelming and undeniable statistical evidence stating that these racial imbalances are real. Even the most racist of whites (you hear me, Sean Hannity?) will not dare argue that there have not been hundreds of years of murderous and holocaust-like terrorism of people of color in America. The remnants of this discrimation show themselves all around us in our horrifically imbalanced society. To think that you can reverse 400 years of devastation with 30 years of affirmative action is non-sense.
Many Americans think that racism relates to what we are doing right now. They think that racial inequality will magically disappear if we simply "stop being racist." That's like saying that you can drive a car at 100 miles per hour for 3 years straight and that by taking your foot off the gas, the car is going to stop, turn around and start moving backward. That's silly. If Americans are serious about creating real racial healing, the truth is that a meaningful and respectful dialogue must occur. We must be every bit as deliberate and progressive in removing the inequality as we were in creating the inequality in the first place. Killing the messenger on a regular basis is not going to solve the problem.
In the audio clip below, I have a conversation with Elliot Millner, a black attorney who breaks down the logistics of the Sonia Sotomayor reversal and how it affects every day Americans. Please take a listen.

how about calling yourselves American...OMG what a concept. I have had conversations with blacks that do just that. If you want whites to treat you as they do themselves then start being an American. I am not saying give up your African heritage. (if you even know what it is) but start looking at America as your home. I do not say I am scottish American, and most whites do not feel the need to distinguish ourselves by which continent are ancestors came, we are just proud to be American!!!!

What you don't understand Sarah is that until whites make an effort to correct for past injustices, we are not going to feel comfortable coming into your fold. It's like a man beating the crap out of his wife and saying "bitch, I ain't gonna apologize, but can't we just be a family?"

regardless how you discribe yourself we all deserve respect, thats all we asking. newly documented americans dress in their native dress and nothing is said, more spanish being spoken than english in clifornia yet when the most discriminated against race in the history of the world show a little pride white people dont understand. Kidnap a person 300 yrs ago and then fault the children for not knowing their heritage, typical white folks thinking.

To say you are an American, still doesn't prevent white America from discriminating against us. Just the mere indication of reverse discrimination is like saying, "LOOKY HERE YOU PEOPLE ARE JUST DUMB NOT ONE BLACK HAD A HIGHER SCORE THAN ANY WHITE THAT WE HIRED". Which we know is just balony. What about all those dumb whites that were hired over those whites whos supposibly scored higher. We know that you are not hired or promoted on who scored higher, or who is more qualified, because if that is the case, how did George Bush, finish high school, go on to graduate from a prestigious college, and become President. He is the most stupid ignorant person of all races. If a black was running with Bushes creditials, the statement the typical black man would have been made, and he wouldn't beeen elected president. It is common knowledge that blacks have to jump over hurdles, dig tunnels, and pull a rabbit out of their hat to be compared to the dumbest of the whites. It is not up to the Blacks to identify themselves as Americans, it is America who has to stop listing that as an option when applying for anything in America.

Thank you for your comment Sara. As a Black American I do agree that it is time that we as black people begin to make changes to the way we choose to define ourselves. After all, most African-Americans have never even seen the land of Africa so why not take pride in the land in which we know? Unfortunately, many people (all races included) are choosing to live their lives in the past, which was probably built on folks tales and not actual knowledge. All I am saying is that it's a new year and time we as a nation start making changes to kill all the hatred.

This is an complete lie! Many whites distinguish themselves by their ethnic groups here in New york City. My whites friends are quick to point out their heritage and ethnic group such as Italian, Irish, and German. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. If blacks could identify what country in Africa that their ancestors came from, they would be able to claim that part of Africa as their own. Blacks are proud to be in america, but we are not proud of how we have been treted for many years. My parents and their parents and extended family members grew up under the Jim Crown south. They were treated with contempt and degraded and humilated many times while growing up. That cannot be erased from their minds. I have never needed a test to be downgraded for me. I passed the SAT with a hight score, taken the state nuring exam and passed with a high score, and I continue to achieve and aspire as I graduated from graduate school with a degree/certificate in advanced nursing. The only way to beat anybody at any game, is to be twice as good, so that whites cannot say that you received any special favors. You beat them at their own game!

I am so sorry to see that you believe all we have to do is just say we are Americans. In fact, every since our ancestors were freed from slavery we have been crying that we are Americans. But, the sad matter is the fact that our declaration fell on deaf ears, especially among people of your persuasion who wanted us to simply shut up, and go away and pretend that certain racial atrocities never happened!
Furthermore, it has never been a question prior to, during, or after slavery that those who were either born "white" in America or made citizens by oath, should be considered Americans regardless of their heritage, only those of us who are "people of color" or black once considered as 1/5th a man in the very nation where we are born.
So remember, you have never had to fight to distinguish yourself as American among the general population because of the color of your skin, but we have, all particulary as a result of years of deliberate racism perpetrated by "white" America.
Come on get Real, and let's earnestly work to get along by be honest about the impact of our past history on all of us.

That comment in itself is an insult. I think most blacks would know what their heritage was if they had been able to maintain some of their heritage. Hell, they were beaten and forced to communicate only in the language of their captors.
Since they weren't allowed to learn to read, they rerely grasped the language fully because you need to know how to read the language to understand it.
I can honestly say that whites have no clue of what it might have been like to be slave to lazy people who only wanted others to do they work they should have been doing for themselves. Things like raising their own children, farming their own land, cooking their own meals etc. Until you can identify with the captive, by having been in that place; don't dare condescend to them about America.

Sarah,
Your comments are so filled with erroneous generalization that I am stunned. For your information, every American black person I know (including myself) refers to him or herself as an "American." Perhaps you need to get out of the house and meet some black people (and NO, watching black people on TV doesn't count).
Furthermore:
1. Do you understand that blacks have struggled to be considered "American" ever since we were brought here as slaves? Maybe if you took 8th grade history class, you would know this. I also suggest you listen to Dr. King's speeches and read some of W.E.B. DuBois' work (IF you know who they are).
2. Do you realize that there ARE non-blacks that refer to their ethnicities, as well as their nationality (e.g., many Irish American and Italian Americans do this - why is it okay when they do it, but when black people do it, it's a no-no?).
3. Do you also realize that whether or not someone considers himself "American" should have no bearing on whether or not you treat him with respect (e.g., your not being a bigot)?
I suggest you get yourself an education about not only American history, but logic and argumentation. You have no evidence for your claims, aside from your biases.

the reason you do not have to distinguish what type of white American you are is because you are a part of the default majority. all that you need is your skin color and you're in. you don't need to say you're scottish, or german, or afrikaaner. the only reason we use African American is because we were tired of bein called n*gger. get your facts straight.
