The Sonia Sotomayor confirmation hearings may be short on punchlines, but there is enough material to make you wonder who's getting the last laugh.
I turned on the TV to catch the opening remarks. The things I saw had me wondering if this is all a joke?
Sen. Al Franken attended as a member of the Judiciary Committee. Really? He went from jokes and comedy to sitting on the Judiciary Committee -- with a Supreme Court nomination on the line no less – in one fell swoop?
Sotomayor gave some remarks after listening to a chorus of senators praise her professional qualifications and personal achievements. Her shining moment? Noting her commitment to the "fidelity to the law," something that many will say contrast with her statement that a wise Latina would be a better jurist than a white man based on life experiences, not interpretation of law.
Really? Is this the traditional "everyone move to the right" dance that Democrat-loyal politicos do before elections and appointments?
The big joke during this nomination hearing, however, will likely be on the part of Republicans. If you think that you're going to get A-game opposition to Sotomayor, think again.
Without major ammunition to combat the nomination, Republicans on the Judiciary Committee will walk the fine line of pressing Sotomayor without coming across as actively picking a fight with her, especially as she comes in to replace a fellow liberal. As long as Democrats control Congress and President Obama resides on Pennsylvania Avenue, Republicans have very little to gain from harsh criticism of this selection for the high court, even in light of the recent Ricci decision.
What Republicans will do, perhaps, is use this opportunity to prime the American viewing public for the next round of campaigning, using this high-profile opportunity to present examples that reflect the types of judges and candidates the GOP will begin supporting. The spotlight will not be wasted on attacking a candidate who will be confirmed when the opportunity to contrast philosophies between Democrats and Republicans is evident.
If Republicans play it right, this hearing will be a good opportunity to draw some delineations between themselves and their counterparts without having to put up one of their own in the process.
And if they are successful, it could end up being a good time for everyone.
A comedian can get people to take him seriously as a senator. A judge can have the crowning achievement of her career.
And the Republican Party can get the last laugh.

I can't make heads or tail of this article.
All I know is I loved watching Sotomayor get interrogated by these old southern bigots and I can't help but guess what was going through her mind.
This is one wise Latina Woman who didn't make the rules but sure knows how to play the game. She's just sitting there with a little smirk, & I bet she's thinking; "firing away old white man, I am off to the Supreme Court and "ain't" nothing you can do about it. I'll be staying for a while too." lol! Welcome to the new America endagered specie.
Lenny you look so normal, what went wrong for you to turn out to be a republican son?

o contrare, Len. The Republicans are the laughing stock. Your analysis of this hearing leaves much wanting. Didn't you find it interesting that the two most antagonistic senators on the panel are from the deepest, darkest, poorest Southern states? Both of these conservative Republicans reek of the insidious self righteousness that characterizes the right. Re examine their questioning of Sotomayer and you will be sure to notice the covert racialism. Lindsey Graham had the audacity to say that if he said something like white men can make better judges than other ethnic groups, his political career would be over. He knows damn well that he doesn't have to make a claim like that. In the South, among his conservative constituents in South Carolina he would get two extra votes and an amen. How any African American can be a Republican these days is nut numbing.

Ordinarily, there would be no reason to pay any attention to Louisville, CO. However, Louisville CO is getting some attention these days because it got the top spot in the list of CNN Money.com Best Cities to live in. A small mountain town with population of less than 20,000, straight out of South Park, median family income is nearly twice the national average – because only rich people can afford to live in mountain towns like Louisville, Colorado. At any rate, the list it tops tends to favor small towns (criteria being a population of 50,000 or less – hardly small) over cities. From the description of Louisville CO, it might be worth some easy payday loans to move there.read more clickhttp://personalmoneystore.com/moneyblog/2009/07/13/louisville-tops-moneycom-cities/

I believe you are correct about the Republicans using these hearings to sow the seeds for 2010. It isn't a matter of opinion to express this idea. Just an observation of politics and what has been expressed on conservative talk radio.

Lenny I often wonder how many KKK members have sat on the Supreme Court. God bless Judge Sonia Sotomayer. She will be better than the rest and her presence on the Supreme Court is long over due.

LOL Lenny are you afraid of our attacks, so you had your pic. taken down? Did you post it at the "Free Republic?" Do you feel safer with them? Haven't you heard what they said about Malia? That's what they think of all Black folks. That could be your daughter they are talking about.
Truth be told, despite our political differences, you are a brother and we will always have your back. You can always come home. I am sorry you felt compelled to pull your pic down. We are just pulling your leg.
