I've had the chance to interact with Wendy Williams on a regular basis over the past 3 years. We've talked about hip hop, Barack Obama, why I didn't marry my beautiful ex-fiance, and why Oprah doesn't seem to like Ice Cube very much. These encounters have shown me why Wendy has truly earned her title as "The Queen of Urban Radio." But no matter how powerful she is, every queen needs an equally strong person to protect her and represent her interests. Until recently, that person was Nicole Spence.
The first thing I noticed when walking into the Wendy Williams Experience (this unbelievable pink room that you have to see to believe), was that Nicole was THE BOSS. The same way that Jesus is the only path to God, Nicole was the only path to Wendy. I'm not here to talk about the drama that took place between the two of them (they no longer work together), but I can only say that it made me sad. I truly felt that they were a great team.
As outstanding, competitive and professional as Wendy is as a host, Nicole was equally diligent, smart, tough and resourceful as her producer/agent/spokesperson/publicist. She could charm your socks off with one sentence and bite your head off in another. That's how you get to the top of the most competitive media market in the world - ain't no half-steppin.
In 2009, both Wendy and Nicole have moved on to big things. Wendy now has a hot new daytime television show, and Nicole is hosting a show on Music Choice. The drama has ended, but their greatest years are in front of them.
AOL Black Voices had the chance to catch up with Nicole Spence for a recent interview.
1) What is your name and what do you do for a living?
My name is Nicole Spence. I'm a Relationship/Lifestyle Journalist.
2) You were mostly known for your work with the Wendy Williams Experience. You were the gatekeeper for her show and worked on a daily basis with high profile celebrities. What was that like?
It was very high energy and fast paced. As the talent booker for the show and radio station I've wrangled such artists as Janet Jackson and Chris Brown. There was always something going on. I learned to think outside of the box, and that assertiveness is key. Keeping and establishing relationships in this business has kept things always moving for me.
3) What would you consider to be one of the greatest misperceptions of the celebrity life?
The misconception is that everything is perfect, everything that glitters isn't gold. A part of being a celebrity is selling a dream, selling the glamorous life, people would be less entertained by the "real" and the hard work and sacrifice that goes into living up to the hype of the fame.
4) You have a new show coming out on Music Choice TV. Tell us about it.
The show is called" Certified" it airs every Monday starting July 6th on Music Choice television. On Certified, two artists go head to head, and the fans decide who wins. I'm one of the celeb panelists that provides inside scoops and artist commentary.
5) You have a very popular blog and a lot of followers. What do you tend to write about?
I enjoy writing about real life situations, conundrums and solutions. I've always had a knack for relationship and sex talk without being too preachy but more conversational with my approach to advice, exposing my own mistakes as we figure things out together. Through weight battles and braving the New York City Singledom, I'm no stranger to my own struggles and triumphs, and I have found it to be cathartic to talk about it. I'm not the one that's going to pretend like everything is sweet; shoot sometimes it's not! Thats Real Life...and that's what I blog about: Nicole In Real Life.
6) What are your plans for the future?
As a certified Pilates instructor and lifestyle expert my plan is to continue fusing my love and obsession to live a beautiful and healthy life, sharing tips with friends along the way, not just from me but also from my celebrity friends! I'm booking the talent and I am the Talent!

You probably have to be from the New York City area to really appreciate Wendy. She is so New York. Like Mary J. Blige, we love her and will support her when no one else does.
