The events which transpired last week before Professor Henry Louis Gates and Sgt. James Crowley hypnotized the nation. What is most interesting, however, is that the reactions were merely symptoms of a larger problem that is far more intriguing than the events themselves. People thought they were fighting over Crowley and Gates, when the truth was that they were fighting over unresolved racial issues that continue to confuse our great nation.
In the video below, Roland Martin and I discuss the issue on Anderson Cooper 360. The goal is not to haggle over whether Crowley or Gates is in the right. The goal is to determine whether our nation can actually learn from the odd events that took place this week. We've been fighting for several days and I have yet to find that "teachable moment."

All the events that has gone for the past weeks, months, and years, is something to learn and to take seriously. We all can have discussions, forums, ect.. that will open a dialogue about racism. I feel, nothing will ever get resolved? It's sad, but there is no CURE for the ones that will always have the racism in their heart! It's hard being a minority in a America. I mean, haven't we struggled enough in the past? There is not one black person out there to say that they have never experienced any racism? I bet everybody has stories to tell and sad to say, this will go on till these last days here on this earth! I will still keep praying for love, equality, and peace! I will be watching CNN tomorrow.

Dear Dr. Boyce,
Even thought we all have our own opinions and are entitled to it, I have to disagree with you. I still respect your comment. I am going to have to agree with Roland Martin on this one.

the reason that America can't get past racism is because all races were never meant to be equal, or even citizens, for that matter. i invite people to read Ben Franklin's treatise "On Becoming an American". he advocates 'scourging the planet' of dark people and 'scouring the woods' of Native Americans. he even asks why America should 'increase the sons of Africa' when there is so much opportunity for white people to prosper here.
almost all of our founding fathers had slaves. when the declaration of independence was written, they forced Thomas Jefferson to remove the paragraph he had written questioning the morality of slavery. even Abraham Lincoln said " if i could free the union without freeing any slave, i would do it; and if i could save it by freeing all the slaves, i would do it; and if i could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, i would also do that..."
from the beginning of this country, black has meant dirty and white has meant pure (read the dictionary), and that racism has been in stitutionalized for 400 years.
in order for things to fair, white people will have to give back some of what they stole by the blood, sweat and tears of our ancestors. it is easier to hate us than for them to look in the mirror and admit what they owe us, because they certainly have to plans to sacrifice any part of 400 years of political and socioeconomic privelege.
America does not want to not see color, because color in this country means power. and it was planned that way from the beginning.

IMO, the reason anti-black hatred & oppression is still a major part of the US mindset/culture is partly due to the anemic efforts of so-called black intellectuals to clearly explain the phenomena and to offer practical solutions.
The US is an anti-black (not other groups) white supremist system (corp + legal + media + white traditional behavior/beliefs), yet black people routinely include hispanic/latinos when discussing our oppression. A white hispanic was never subject to slave laws and Jim Crow, for example.
The US has always been a capitalist system and blacks were denied access to capital thru law for 300 yrs - that's causes serious problems in capitalist system that only reparations can solve.
I've found the majority of black people hate black skin & features - the white man done took yo mind - so many self haters.
If you're gonna be lemmings and poor communicators and ok with the majority of your people not 'making it', things will continue to be dire.
Hey, what ever happened to 'twice as good to get 1/2 as much'.
Got to be twice as good and right now we're 1/2 as good.

I think a major reason blacks are at bottom of US qual of life stats is because black people are either very poor communicators or don't understand why they're in the fix they are - or both.
Here's my take:
The US is a 400 yo anti-black (not other groups - so why are you always including hispanics? They don't like or respect you) white supremist capitalist system. Said system is comprised of corp + legal + media + white beliefs/tradition systems. These were born out of GOVT IMPOSED slavery (blocking blacks) nothing like indentured servitude. Said system was in place for appx 300 yrs (slavery/jim crow). 300 yrs out of 400 yrs = structural tradition (it's in bones of system & has NOT been dismantled.) Being subjected to 300 yrs of vicious treatment has produced a mindset of fear/self hate in black community (various other pathologies as well including HATE of black men by black women.) Women don't know their place & men don't either (just like your white masters taught you).
You can't solve a problem until you correctly diagnose it. Until black community gets intelligence and guts to demand reparations (historical remedy), you'll forever remain at the bottom. Until you break the shackles of your mental self hate & overwhelming fear, you'll never progress.
You're the only race of people with no unity and who's ok with only 10% of your people 'making it'. NO OTHER GROUP RESPECTS you cause you won't/can't respect yourselves.
I'm a 45 yo dark skin black man who's been fighting the good fight my entire life and will not stop. My life will not be in vain and I love black people (at least previous generations, not today's). I'm a 'big picture' thinker who always asks why.
Is the stereotype of the cowardly, selfhating, dumb and defeated negro true? Hell, you fools are still saying it's about race. No it's not, it's about being anti-black cause anti-black is historical in the US.
I sure hope you have the humanity and selflessness to take a lesson. I think the white man took that out of you. You call yourself a man, but allow women to lead you? I'd rather die alone with nothing than to ever join your way of looking at and understanding life.
PS: The slaves & 19th century & early-mid century blacks were head & shoulders above today's chickens (the only time you get tough is with each other - what poor excuses for humanity).
Please take my lesson and change - you're extinct if you don't.

Dr. Watkins, I do admire your work and the fact that you're fighting for black people; however, we as blacks have to communicate the problem much better. Every group of people has a race but not every group endured the system of slavery that was imposed in the Americas thru the Trans Atlantic Slave trade. The vocabulary has to be much more precise and graphic. I can & will if I have to, speak about the rapes, lynchings, breaking up of families etc. if you all are too afraid to.
I don't think these black media-talking heads understand the absolute seriousness of black people's situation. When a govt admits to unfairly targeting a group of people with unfair/vicious treatment (US slavery), reparations are called for. This is a capitalist system and always has been. You must have education and $ in order to thrive. We (blacks) were blocked thru law from acquiring capital. You media black men are always upholding the strength of the black woman. Well, here's the truth. Black women for the past 40 yrs have raised their sons to become prison inmates or to go to an early grave. They've raised their daughters to become educated & to marry white men.
You folks seem too lost to be able to handle the truth. Hey, truth will set you free. You folks are so quick to get on your knees & pray to a 'pie in the sky' idea instead realizing we're all gonna die & if you REALLY love black people, we're gonna have to fight.
Keep following the girls - don't forget your jar of vaseline if that's what you're gonna do.
So, if you LUCKY ones, who've been supported & were part of that 1st generation of blacks who benefited from affirmative action just forget about the following generations, not only will that affirmative action end, but you'll find yourselves losing your advantage over the other blacks (don't play with me, I know how you negros are).

Judge Andrews Napolitano agrees with Gates that Gates rights were voilated. The techable moment is that we all need to read the "Bill of Rights".
