Why is FOX's Glenn Beck painting the green movement red with his talk of black nationalism, a vast left-wing conspiracy and communism?I know, it sounds like a redo of Dave Chappelle's 'When Keepin' It Real Goes Wrong.'
Well, in some ways, it is. This is very real, and, for many, this is very wrong.
Beck's explanation of the involvement of Van Jones, special advisor for green jobs, enterprise and innovation, in the Obama administration is exactly why conservatives love Beck and why others are turned off by the political right.
Beck took time to sidestep Jones' evident love for the environment and its studies (something I witnessed first-hand earlier this year), instead alluding to his arrest during the Rodney King incident of 1991 (almost 20 years ago) and a one-off tie to ACORN and other cohorts in the "vast left-wing conspiracy."

Van Jones: Quotes on Green
On the Grassroots Success of His Book: "Jones ultimately attributes the success of the book's marketing campaign to what he calls the 'invisible network of networks,' and he thinks this 'network effect' is here to stay. 'There are too many products coming from too many directions, people ignore the hype,' he said. 'But if you're in a network that's about respect and reciprocity, people will take action.'"
Vanjones.net
Why the Hood and the Elite Need to Meet: "Among African-Americans, you have many who will ask you, 'What do polar bears and hybrid cars have to do with my situation?'... And then, mainstream environmentalists will say, 'What do prisons and failing schools have to do with the environment?'... We talk about 'disposability' -- the idea that we have throw-away species and throw-away resources. We also think that we have throw-away children and throw-away neighborhoods."
Retna
Why Green is a Black Issue: "The only reason that we have the unsustainable accounting that we have right now is because incinerators, dumping grounds, and sacrifice zones were put where poor people live. It would never have been allowed if you had to put all the incinerators and nasty stuff in rich people's neighborhoods; we'd have had a sustainable economy a long time ago... We don't want to be first and worst with all the toxins and all the negative effects of global warming, and then benefit last and least from all the breakthroughs in solar, wind energy, organic food, all the positives. We want an equal share, an equitable share, of the work wealth and the benefits of the transition to a green economy."
Vince Bucci, Getty Images
The Future for Our Children: "From the point of view of planetary survival, every job needs to be a green job... there will be a need to focus much more on math and science and the need for technological innovation and invention. We're focused on those young people who may not have college in their future. We want to make sure that we bring back vocational arts. We see a need for vocational skills training, a need for a well-paid green-collar workforce in the United States that can install solar panels, weatherize, retrofit buildings, do rainwater management, and construct buildings that are smarter with regard to energy and water. We think that the sooner those values get inculcated in young people, the better off we'll be."
Getty Images
Seeing and Making the Connections: "If we can get these youth in on the ground floor of the solar industry now, where they can be installers today, they'll become managers in five years and owners in 10. And then they become inventors... The green economy has the power to deliver new sources of work, wealth and health to low-income people -- while honoring the Earth. If you can do that, you just wiped out a whole bunch of problems. We can make what is good for poor black kids good for the polar bears and good for the country."
AP
Moving From Consumption to Creation: "Well, for too long, we powered the U.S. economy with consumption, not production... massive debt, not smart savings... and environmental destruction, not restoration. Those days are over. To green the economy, we stop borrowing and start building. We stop relying on credit from overseas; we start relying on creativity here at home. And we generate jobs by protecting America's beauty, not destroying it. We can turn this breakdown into a breakthrough -- if we make clean energy the cornerstone of the new economy, not credit cards. Green-collar jobs will save our economy, not just the Earth."
Getty Images
Praising Obama's Stimulus Plan: "It's an especially exciting moment for me and my colleagues at Green For All, the Apollo Alliance, the Workforce Alliance and the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. The stimulus includes $500 million for green jobs training -- funding we've been trying to get for two years. That means that the recovery package won't just stimulate the green economy. It will also make sure that the green economy includes pathways out of poverty for low-income people and people of color."
Ed Andrieski, AP
Green Jobs as Prosperity's Key: "Green-collar jobs are not fictional or far-off. The Center for American Progress and PERI just put out a 'Green Recovery' report. It showed that a $100 billion federal investment would create two million new, green-collar jobs -- in just TWO years. That's just helping America deploy our existing, off-the-shelf technologies and proven solutions. No technological breakthroughs needed. And some of that pays for itself, in energy savings. So when you think about the green economy, don't think about Buck Rogers. Think about Joe Sixpack -- putting on a green hard hat and going off to fix America. Think about Rosie the Riveter -- manufacturing solar arrays and wind turbines."
Getty Images / AP
Jones' New Position in the Obama Administration: "The title is special adviser for green jobs, enterprise and innovation... As we begin to move toward a clean-energy economy, we have an opportunity to have equal opportunity from the very beginning, making sure all Americans can take part... Part of my job description does have me available to advocate publicly, but I think we're going to be focusing primarily internally for the near term... I'm the green-jobs handyman. I'm there to serve. I'm there to help as a leader in the field of green jobs, which is a new field."

Van Jones Has Arrived in Washington: "Last Friday, I had the immense honor of speaking at the first meeting of Vice President Joe Biden's new White House Task Force for Middle Class Working Families. Vice President Biden launched his Task Force with a discussion of how green jobs could help build a strong middle class. And he asked me to chime in from Green For All. What a measure of how far our green jobs movement has come. We've brought to light real solutions to the economic and environmental problems facing the country. And we've done it so well and so beautifully that the White House itself wants to hear what we have to say -- and wants to make sure everyone else is listening, too."

I get it. President Obama is considered a very liberal-leaning president, despite his speeches and spoken rhetoric.
I understand that this can be seen as very un-American to a lot of people.
However, the repeated performances of "the sky is falling" hymnal from Beck and others only wears out the patience of a nation full of short-sighted citizens who follow issues via a media-dictated pace. Even if Jones was a "self-professed communist" who is part of Obama's plan to re-engineer America into socialism (a very tough sell to make), the political right wing of the country has lost the moral authority to make a compelling case of it.
Throwing around scare-tactic terms such as "black nationalist" keeps the right wing in the IOU section of the moral authority ledger, especially when terms like socialism are not as scary as they once were.
It keeps conservatives on the outside in when it comes to gaining traction with a growing section of Americans.
There are plenty of things that are un-American about the Obama administration. The setting up of czars (a Russian term, no less) is just one example. However, the extremism coming from the left is perhaps no more unpatriotic as the insistent demonization that comes from the hard wing. Unfortunately, both sides these days are as American as mom's apple pie.

You don't understand the humor of Van Jones. Have you looked at the context of what he said? Get real.

Van Jones did say he was a ommunist, not past tense, he IS a communist, he is also an ex convict, pardon me if I don't understand what he is doing in the white house, I'm older and I always remember when anyone was elsected to anything they had to have a clean slate, of course they usually screwed up once they were in office anyway, and they still do. I grew up in an era where the worst thing you could be called was a communist, now its a racist, I don't like Communism, but Mr. Jones seems to have turned his life around so what can you do, make a big deal of it, what would the point be? I am an independent voter, and I've never been to a tea party but the Right wing extremists as they ar ebeen called hav ea right to protest, blacks do it all the time, this is the first time whites hav ereally done it on such a grand scale and some of those protestors are democrats, no one wants to have their bank accounts in the hands of the Government or have a husband or Mother die of an illness because they are over 60, they will also have access not only ot your bank account but to your financial records, I don't think so, only God will tell me when I'm going to die and only God will knbow my bank number. The thing they are forgetting is that this is still America and they are really underestimating the American people, al lot of those men fought in wars against communism and now here it is in our oown wGovernment, 85% of the Government , Congress and senate are members of the CFR, a globalist group that want to see America borderless and without any staanding and a communist run country. Americans won't stand for it. Calling them names and making them seem like crazy people is ridiculous, they are mad and they don't want this new health care reform, they don't want the Govenrment running their lives, do you blame them? Do you want it, do you want to pay for the illegals who will have access to this health care and you pay? this is communism at its finest. I fyou think black kids had trouble getting summer jobs or any jobs before then wait until you see what happens with this group , you will be lucky if you can get a job washing dishes. I guess we don't understand why Obama is right and not a communist jus tbecause he is half black. that doesn't make him right and that makes you racist if thats why you voted for him. I didn't vote for him because I knew what his previous affiliations were and what he intends to do to Israel, I'm not Jewsih but I don't want to see a whole country , women and Children wiped off the map. To me this is not a racial issue, this is an American issue and if you want to live under communism there will be no reparations for that later. Everyone talks about China , whre you hav eno rights, now they ar eour butt buddies, they have our jobs and they are communists, the only difference between them and us is that they have jobs, our jobs. Americans hav ea right to yell and protest, they are Americans and its their right to do that, calling them right wing extremists is not the way to go, they are not, they are jus tregular people who don't want communism in the whitehouse or America. As long as I'm ranting, when you go for a job, any job , you hav eto show a birth certificate or you don't get hired, they don't want to hire illegals and I've had to show my birth certificate ofr years, Obama workds for us, he was hired by the people, he is a Public servant, Government workers , senators , congressmen are all public servants, hired by us, so Obama needs to show his birth certificate like any American and be sone with it, that is the right thing to do and it would shut the birthers up, if he can't do that then show his school records and medical records like other Presidents hav eto do if they are asked to, President is a job you know. I'm thinking that a lot of people do not know what America and the constitution stand for, its not communisim.

Interesting comments but many falsehoods. First, there is NOTHING in the health care bill that is even remotely related to killing elderly citizens dispite what the right wing media says. There is only a provision in which end of life issues can be discussed and paid for by the government insurance. Secondly, many Black people do not see communism as evil because in the 20's, 30's and 40's the Communist Workers' Party fought for equal rights for people of color and women which was very dangerous and revolutionary at the time. Please stop with the birth certificate issue, he was born in Hawaii in 1961. If he wasn't don't you think the FBI, CIA, CNN or Faux News would have found SOMETHING by now?
Why would providing health care for all Americans be considered communism? Shouldn't all citizens have health care? I certainly want a public option.

Marc, what are you basing the claim of "racist" on? I haven't found a video clip to support this claim anywhere, nor a sound bite. The only things I can find are people who make emotional accusations without evidence to support the argument. Can you expound on this claim? It seems there is more evidence to the contrary, is all I'm saying. Also, "idiot" doesn't seem to fit Beck's profile either. Perhaps you could call him a conservative or a libertarian as he is both of those. You could even call him a fear monger as the truth that he uncovers frightens people. I just ask that you use facts to support your claims, as he uses facts and evidence to support his, rather than emotionally charged rhetoric.

Thank you Madeline, you summed up my feelings exactly. I have Never posted a comment on any web site before, but your comments made my day. Each day I get more and more frustrated with the whole birth certificate and hidden school records issue. Just yesterday I had to show my birth certificate and social security card for a part time 12 hour a week job where all I do is file papers. My child just started collge and I spent this past entire year filling out forms and had to continously provide documents such as birth certificates and they had to know Every possible detail of my life history and my husbands. And to make matters worse we Did Not even receive one penny of financial aid. We have been greatly effected by the economic dowturn since we have a small retail company and we have been relying on any credit we have to keep going until the economy hopefully bounces back. We have received No Stimulus handouts or special considerations on any of our loans. When I was paying for books with my maxed out credit card at our local community collge, everyone else in line with me was paying with financila aid (free money), courtesy of OUR Tax dollars. One lady even had financial aid in her name and was buying her son's text books with her aid account account. (What was that all about? Does he qualify for aid money and if so where did it go?)
I am trying to earn my college degree at the age of 44 and Want to go to college so I can get a better job but yet there isn't one penny avaialble for me. I pay my taxes on time but yet some of the "smartest" and most powerful men Obama appointed couldn't figure out and pair their taxes and are not being punished or penalized but yet Rewarded with a high level government job and the priveledge of working in the White House. Geithner & Rangel) I constantly tell myself to get over with it and move on but every day we find out more and more. How much longer can this go on? I've always been a very cheeful happy person despite lifes ups and downs but this is turning me into a very Bitter woman. I just keep praying (if that is allowed) that our strong, proud, patriotic, hard working citizens of the United States will unite and stand up and say No More.

Beck and others are just throwing fuel on the already nervousness of some people in america about having an black president and a diverse administration. There was an attempt during the campaign to demonize the million man march as a radical event against Obama because one of the sponsors was the nation of islam along with fraternities, churchs and other civil rights organizations.
Beck is contunuing to connect in any way Obama to radical elements especially socialism and radical black theology. He has an audience and he cant afford to lose them or their finances with the truth.

Dear President Obama, STOP! STOP! STOP!....PLEASE!
Stop having town hall meeting
the Republican Party are using these meeting for propaganda.
I feel what you are trying to do and how you are trying to aide those who need it.
I know this is the year 2009 but we are really living in the 1930's.
Continue with your agenda, but don't give the evil forces room to rear it's ugly head.
I hope and prey that change will soon come, where we will be able to live in love...I hope.
