On posters appearing around Washington D.C.'s Union Station, a smiling 8-year-old vegetarian from a Florida public school asks the question: "President Obama's daughters get healthy school lunches. Why don't I?"
It's part of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine's campaign to extend school lunch legislation that would allow for more fruits and vegetables in school lunches. I'd say the ad is successful in that it's garnered some publicity.
But I'm guessing that the ad's creators are misguided if they think their legislation will win any special attention from the president now that they've singled out the first daughters as a gimmick. After all, I'm sure that every federal legislator's kid has the opportunity to have a healthy lunch, particularly those in private schools. ...
The White House refuses to respond to the campaign, which cost about $20,000 to keep the ads posted in Union Station for the month of August. The committee linked up with Jasmine after she spoke at a Hill nutrition briefing she attended with her mother, a University of Miami pediatric epidemiologist, earlier this year.
If White House officials respond at all, it will prove the campaign to be a huge success, said Washington communications expert Michael Robinson of Levick Strategic Communications. Source: Ads targeting Obama girls may anger White House, Erika Lovley - Politico.com
The White House has allowed plenty of photo ops with Sasha and Malia -- a few too many for my taste. But this ad didn't need to use them. If my kid was a vegan or vegetarian, I'd pack the lunch myself.
With ketchup designated as a vegetable, I sure wouldn't trust my vegan little one's diet to the public school hot lunch. That's a shame, but that's the truth. And since we're estimating 44 kids to a cIassroom in the fall, we could make similar ads targeting class size, reading materials, athletic facilities, all of it. Why go after the kids in any case?

I agree but I will go a step further and say ask your Governor. After all most of the issues we face now occurred under whose administration? That's right the former president who shares the same last name as the Florida Governor. In addition, many students are still attempting to overcome the changes to the education system that occurred under the Reagan administration.

The answer to the ad is very simple. The First Daughters are in a private school, remember.
Let's not be dumb here. If my child is in a PRIVATE SCHOOL, I am sure the quality of the breakfast and lunch meals will be different than a Florida or D.C. PUBLIC SCHOOL!!!

Put your daughters in a private school and they will be better fed. Better yet, prepare their lunches yourself. Their mother feeds them homegrown vegetables. Your view is berry narrow.

Kashanti, I agree. The lunches that are serve in Chicago public schools are horrible. People wouldn't feed their animals but will feed our children? There have been reporting of spoil milk, cold meat. Who would give these children this to eat? Then they get sick from food poisoning then what.

are you serious, do you understand that private schools are funded by parents who pay. how about this take some action in your childs life and stop expecting everyone else to do it. my child has a monthly menu, we look at it together and if she does not like what will be served guess what, i as her mother provide a lunch. people need to take charge of their childrens education and nurishment and stop looking for someone to do it for them. if these children want the same lunch as the obama girls get they better get some new parents
