As tennis phenoms Venus and Serena Williams prepare for this year's U.S. Open, which starts Aug. 31, a candid interview Serena recently gave to People magazine is drawing plenty of attention. The younger Williams sister discussed her new memoir, 'On the Line,' which touches on fashion, love, body image, and her bout with depression after the murder of her half-sister, Yetunde Price, in 2003. What she went through after losing Price is the heart of 'On The Line':
It was a real dark period in my life. I went through depression. I never even talked about it to my mom. No one knew I was in therapy, but I was. I was so close to her.
Not surprisingly, that dark time led to a 20-pound weight gain. Add the hypercritical glare of the media spotlight, and it's not surprising that like many women, Serena wrestles with insecurities about her looks:
Sometimes I look at myself in the mirror and am, like, I want to lose my inner thigh. I've got to do an hour of cardio today, or whatever. I try not to do it, but the insecurity comes back sometimes.

My thighs. I think they're too big. But also my arms. I think they're too muscular. They're too thick.
When People counters that one could "consider those your best part," Serena responds:
I'm sensitive about them. I know that toned arms are in now. Look at Michelle Obama. She has great arms, and I think it's wonderful that she shows them off like that! I love her for that. I'm like, Keep wearing strapless dresses! But I don't like mine.
That's too bad. I deem Serena a beautiful new age woman: Her accomplishments (22 Grand Slams including mixed and doubles, thank you), business sense (she and her sister, Venus, just purchased a stake of the Miami Dolphins) and style (I don't care what the critics say) prove her to be a young woman who is all about her business. I'm sure you've heard some of the negative chatter about how some people view her body, but I love that she still understands that we have to define ourselves:
I want women to know that it's okay. You can be whatever size you are, and you can be beautiful both inside and out. We're always told what's beautiful and what's not, and that's not right.
Serena is a role model just for being honest about her insecurities. She isn't any different from any woman who has an off day and thinks, "I could lose a few,". Loving and valuing yourself throughout those down days is what counts.
Young black girls can rejoice in the accomplishments of a Serena Williams and they can also rejoice in her integrity and strength. Clearly she is working through her issues ... as we all are.

FOLKS YOU ALL NEED TO STOP ENABLING SERENA BY TELLING HER SHE LOOKS GOOD. Maybe, if her profession was something besides an ATHLETE, she is FAT. Needs to drop at least, I mean, at least 25 to 30 lbs, if not more. She moves quicker than most women, but look how much faster she could move! The lady has not begin to reach her potential. She gives out on the court, and if it wasn't for her athletic ability, she would not have gone this far.[which is still incredible] Poor work habits, lack of self-discipline and COMMITMENT has also caused her to not to be her best. I agree she could be as great, on the women's circuit, as Federer. She, at one time, could have over come records set by Martina and other great players, but simply said, as great as she is, she is still outright LAZY!
Now, with that said/written, I may not sound like I am a fan. You'd be wrong, she is my favorite player, [either her or her sister]. She could be the greatest tennis player ever, but time is running out, she is getting older. AND CAN YOU BELIEVE IT, SHE HASN'T EVEN BEGAN TO REACH HER POTENTIAL.
She also needs to come out of herself some. Very very arrogant, which shows a lack of self-confidence. There is a difference. She can even be mean spirited and a poor sport at times. And in interviews, she could be constructive in her criticism of herself, by doing that, SHE COULD GROW AS A HUMAN BEING. Venice is better with her PR skills, but Serena needs some work in that department. People would love to see this more. Both she and Venice act like they are better human beings than others. WRONG. Everybody's poop stinks! This is not an i, i, i, world.
When they first started I understood that, a chip on their shoulders was apparent, in the world of white tennis players, but it is time to come out of all that. They could be embraced by so many more people. THEY NEED TO SHOW COLOR DOESN'T MATTER, and forgive those who are ignorant about that.
SERENA, VENICE GOOD LUCK IN THE US OPEN! From a fan!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the way she looks. I think she looks beautiful just the way she is. She's not fat, she's healthy. A woman doesn't have to be a size 0 to be beautiful. That borders on anorexic. She's perfectly pretty just as she is.

i can only agree that serena is a dynamic woman. when she lost her sister so tragically a lot of damage could have come out of that but a 20 lb weight gain... serena keep your faith close to you and cherish the family you have left. there is a lot of love there to sustain you.but i want to shout out your tennis family which is humongous will always be there for you. stay strong, keep on showing us how healthy size women can run 'em down and send a winner back. and you are a winner for all you've done and will continue to do.

I couldn't agree more Tammie, and to the person who made a comment about her having to lose 30 pounds, thats ridiculous!! Why should she have to lose 30 pounds? Is that going to make YOU feel better?!!!
The same is said for her arms. Someone commented that Serena's arms were fat compared to Mrs. Obama's arms. Both of these women have beautiful toned bodies with NO fat at all. Are you confusing fat with muscle?
Anyway, my point is, Serena is beautiful just the way she is. I for one, couldn't imagine her a size 0. On her frame a size 0 would not be healthy.

everyone who keeps saying she is fat is crazy. She is a fit woman who wasn't meant to have a tiny build..... How about instead of talking trash about her, get your butts out there and accomplish even half of what she has ...Tammie I agree with you there is absolutely nothing wrong with her and I hope she learns to tune these ignorant crabs in a barrel out of her eargates.

Serena, you have an awesome body from head to toe. Please understand there are so many people who wish they had your physique. Keep working it. You are a beautiful black woman. Remember this old saying; no one wants a bone but a dog.
Further, you are playing great tennis and we love watching you and Venus. Good luck at the U.S. Open. I will be watching you.

I am glad to see her looking like she does in something besides a tennis outfit...she is a big girl with a muscular build, but in the photo of her dressed up, she looks softer, less masculine...don't think i knew of her sister, i am sorry for their loss , shouldn't happen to anyone...glad to see her bringing out her feminine side, it really makes a difference in how she looks now.

Throughout history women were depicted as voluptuous. Go to any museum and look at art works by the masters, they depicted the female body as beautifully endowed. Even Hollywood preferred women that looked like women; Marilyn Monroe, Jane Kennedy, Gina lollobridgida, Pam Greer, Sophia Loren and many others, until 1966 when a sack of bones from the London's East End came on the scene. A woman aptly called Twiggy gave the dieting industry a niche that reaps $billions on today's women to emulate unnatural proportion of thinness most cannot achieve. Vane women have been taken in believing they will look and feel better looking more like a boy than a mature desirable woman.

You are sooooo RIGHT. You hit the nail on the head, so to speak, when you named "Twiggy". She was as thin as a "nail". Before the fashion industry started pushing "thinness", if you looked like Twiggy, they thought you were sick or some thing. Now, if you have a little meat on the bones, they say, "you must be sick or some thing".
