As tennis phenoms Venus and Serena Williams prepare for this year's U.S. Open, which starts Aug. 31, a candid interview Serena recently gave to People magazine is drawing plenty of attention. The younger Williams sister discussed her new memoir, 'On the Line,' which touches on fashion, love, body image, and her bout with depression after the murder of her half-sister, Yetunde Price, in 2003. What she went through after losing Price is the heart of 'On The Line':
It was a real dark period in my life. I went through depression. I never even talked about it to my mom. No one knew I was in therapy, but I was. I was so close to her.
Not surprisingly, that dark time led to a 20-pound weight gain. Add the hypercritical glare of the media spotlight, and it's not surprising that like many women, Serena wrestles with insecurities about her looks:
Sometimes I look at myself in the mirror and am, like, I want to lose my inner thigh. I've got to do an hour of cardio today, or whatever. I try not to do it, but the insecurity comes back sometimes.

My thighs. I think they're too big. But also my arms. I think they're too muscular. They're too thick.
When People counters that one could "consider those your best part," Serena responds:
I'm sensitive about them. I know that toned arms are in now. Look at Michelle Obama. She has great arms, and I think it's wonderful that she shows them off like that! I love her for that. I'm like, Keep wearing strapless dresses! But I don't like mine.
That's too bad. I deem Serena a beautiful new age woman: Her accomplishments (22 Grand Slams including mixed and doubles, thank you), business sense (she and her sister, Venus, just purchased a stake of the Miami Dolphins) and style (I don't care what the critics say) prove her to be a young woman who is all about her business. I'm sure you've heard some of the negative chatter about how some people view her body, but I love that she still understands that we have to define ourselves:
I want women to know that it's okay. You can be whatever size you are, and you can be beautiful both inside and out. We're always told what's beautiful and what's not, and that's not right.
Serena is a role model just for being honest about her insecurities. She isn't any different from any woman who has an off day and thinks, "I could lose a few,". Loving and valuing yourself throughout those down days is what counts.
Young black girls can rejoice in the accomplishments of a Serena Williams and they can also rejoice in her integrity and strength. Clearly she is working through her issues ... as we all are.

i remember one of the williams sisters (not sure which one) continuously telling the world how beautiful she was and how she wanted to give up tennis for a modeling/acting career. (i'm TOTALLY serious!!) if serena is that sister then please save the self critism because it's just for the attention. (and book sales)if it was not her then that is great that she can admit this about herself. (but michelle obama?? come on there are about 1000 other people i could name with better ANYTHING than her!!!!) either way neither of the williams sisters are modeling material and NOT because they are black (also read another article about how they aren't "covergirls" like maria sharipova(??)and that they aren't on the covers not because of their skin color but because they just don't have the look!! there are MANY athletes (tennis included) who aren't black and they aren't "covergirls" either. just like there are MANY gorgeous black ladies who DO make the covers. regardless they don't have THAT look and they like to blame others)but they would be great covermodels" for "real women". especially since she is so insecure about her body (not sure how much i believe she believes this) if that is the case then people can respect and relate more to her than the bulemic, chain smoking models like giselle buncheon(??) who all look alike with no special features. so my point is if she is insecure for real about her body then great, THAT is so much better a role model than the bulemic bimbos, but at the same time be sincere don't be full of yourself all the time and then cry poor me to sell some books!!

Wake up people, all of you are talking about how Serena looks, please! Body image is only a small part of who we are. Serena is an AMAZING WOMAN PERIOD!!! Her looks, her style, her integrity, her sincere honesty, her sense of giving, her accomplishment her business sense and you know what, the list goes on and on. We can all learn a little something from Serena. God created all of us in his own image, some of us are just perfect like Serena, but we all have a purpose in this life, big or small. You say Serena, I say Serenity! That is what Serena means to me. She's the real KKK. Take it easy people, KKK means Kewl Kalm and Kollected! I love who you are Serenity, or Serena, means the same thing to me. Now how about some tickets to the game :-) Did you guys forget ownership in the Miami Dolphins! Talk about smart business sense. All I can say is keep on doing what you are doing and believe in God. Remember your strength come from the Lord All Mighty! Just live your life and love who you are because you are, simply put “SERENITY!” Serenity I say to you, Love Life and Live it to the Fullest because you are one of the best and you deserve the best! It’s not just Serenity; it’s the whole Williams Family that’s an ICON or tennis Dynasty. You say Womens tennis and I say the Williams sister, it’s synonymous don’t you think. I mean who else can you compare or who can come close, can we say NOBOBY! Barry White sang it best . . . . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrRPA25UBGg.

WELL, well i see there are haters and lovers on the board. The Williams sisters has done well for themselve. They are role models to alot of people. Serena may be b@tchy and moody at times but so are most high profile people. I find them to be nice looking and smart. I think with the support of her family, true friends and God Serena will continue to do well. Btw, I think hollywood look at blk women differently their negatives and positions. Further as blk women become more successful, sterotipic (sic) images tend to fall apart!!!

I wish the white people who come on this website and respond to black folks comments about anything would stop being fake about racism. Lisa and Rebecca have responded negatively about how many of us are using the term, "black women" in the way we are responding to Serena's self image issues. There is a race problem in America and it won't go away because Obama is president. Actually, racism has gotten worse since Obama has been elected.
Black women everyday have to be subjected to the "white media's perception of beauty, which is white and thin is in and black and thick is inferior. Please, don't say that there is no such thing as the white media. The major networks and majority of the blogs online are 90% white. If you read many of the blogs by white people, they are racists as hell. This a black website, thank god. It gives us good black folks a place to share our unique experiences without having to apologize for anything. If you don't like what we are saying, you have over 90% of other sites to comment on.

WOW! It really just shows how human she is. We all have some things or "body parts" we are not really comfortable with and other people may not have a problem with. The important thing is to just accept who we are and love it. The shame is that so many woman can't or they need something from the outside to make them whole and complete. I think Serena is a beautiful woman, but if she doesn't think so, it really doesn't matter!

She doesn't look fat...she just looks more masculine than feminine. I think that is the thing that people are thinking when they see her. She admitted her arms are too thick and muscular. Exactly! While I would be glad to be in as good of shape as Serena is, I think I would prefer to be smaller boned..and then have the great muscles, because her being so statuesque and large to begin with makes it harder for her to pull off the feminine womanly side.

I didn't care for a specific comment in this article.... why is Serena a wonderful role model for ONLY "black" young ladies?
She is a woman who has something to show us all... If you have an opportunity to see her play, please go! She really gives it her all and she is kind and will sign a ball for your children.

Serena does not like herself why do you think this blog came about? Serena has BIG butt muscles and she wants to lose weight... let Serena lose weight and like her self better. I don't want a tennis player signing balls for my kid if she don't like herself.. Serena take of that wig especialy that ugly crazy looking blond wig, lose some weight feel better about your self then sign my kids tennis balls STUDY MICHELLE OBAMA! and stay away from that wig head Karen Brown of Yeadon look. you go girl... try and look better than Kornicova...Venus does (except for the wigs).. don't do the fake azz lil Kim look PLEASE!
