Patrick Swayze: Rest in Peace

In a town that revels in bashing and slashing its stars, Patrick Swayze's reputation is sterling. Hollywood insiders and fans have nothing but good things to say about Swayze, the dancer, actor and entertainer who died from pancreatic cancer on Monday at the age of 57.

I'm sure most writers will refer to Swayze's graceful and sexy moves as 'Dirty Dancing' renegade instructor Johnny Castle. And others will recall the romantic, otherworldly Sam who possessed Whoopi Goldberg to protect his eternal love, Molly, in the movie 'Ghost.'

But I'll hope you'll remember Swayze's other movies.
'To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar,' the wildly patriotic, 'Red Dawn,' 'Road House' and 'Break Point.' I loved him in all of those rolls. But perhaps Swayze's most impressive role was as a pedophile in the cult favorite 'Donnie Darko.'

That role was a complete stretch for Swayze, who usually played the good-guy hero. But his portrayal of local celebrity and motivational speaker Jim Cunningham was completely nuanced. When it's revealed that Cunningham, a pillar of the community, hides a hidden kiddie porn dungeon, you completely accept Swayze as this perverted character.

Thank you for sharing your artistic talents with us, Mr. Swayze. Rest in peace.
