King Memorial Foundation Discovers Red Tape

There is nothing more annoying than reading the word "urgent" in the subject line of an e-mail only to find out that the issue at hand could have waited until tomorrow, the day after that or next week. This time it was a breathless note from the president and CEO of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Harry E. Johnson, crying out that the sky is falling because it's taking a really long time to get the building permit for the memorial.

Huh?

I write to you with an urgent matter at hand and am requesting you please respond by September 21st. In September, 2008 the Washington, D.C., Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation applied for a building permit from the National Park Service. As of today, we have NOT received the building permit. Source - "Urgent: Help us by taking the Call to Action - email"Now bear with me here.

Maybe a year is an exceptionally long time to be issued a permit for building a new national monument, but the note doesn't say that. Think about it. It can take a year for local zoning boards to approve renovations to a residential building. What's the context?

Also, I cannot tell from this e-mail if the foundation has fully completed all of the requirements asked of it. I also wonder if the foundation planned enough time from its initial application for a permit to estimated ground breaking to account for the perpetually slow and overly complicated wheels of bureaucracy to turn?

Right now, I'm focused on passing some acceptable form of health care reform, national security, jobs, the economy, immigration and our toxic national discourse. If you want me to bug President Obama or Congress, you had better spell out your request explicitly and make me understand why it's "urgent."
