The Pennsylvania Human Rights Commission (PHRC) released a report confirming what seemed obvious to many: Race was a factor in the banning of 66 black and Latino day campers from the Valley Swim Club in late June. According to NBC Philadelphia:
The state board ruled late Tuesday that there was probable cause that the private Huntington Valley, Pa., organization "refused and denied" the campers' ability to use the facilities "due to the child's race."
Several students said they heard members making racial remarks while they were at the Valley Club, which members emphatically denied.
In a 33-page affidavit, the commission details a previously unknown confrontation between a woman who made racial comments about the children and the camp's director.
And although the details of this exchange are disturbing, the commission's report, once and for all, confirms the kids' accounts that racist comments were made about them:
Club member Michelle Flynn and Creative Steps director Alethea Wright had a heated argument after Flynn asked another club member, "What are all of these black kids doing here?" She continued, "I am scared they might do something to my child and they might steal some of my stuff," according to documents.
Flynn and Deborah Mindel, both elementary school teachers, said she knew several of the children from her school and alleged that one had stolen a cell phone before. The PHRC found no evidence that the incident had previously occurred at the school, according to (attorney for four of the kids, David) Mildenberg. What kind of person lies about the criminality of a child? Well, think about it. These women are teachers who've chosen to belong to a segregated club. PHRC contradicts the Valley Swim Club's declarations that it has a racially integrated membership:
The PHRC cited the race of the Valley Club's membership and marketing efforts as probable cause for the rulings. In the past two years, the club's 150-plus membership was all white, according to committee documents. They also said the club made direct marketing efforts toward white neighborhoods while not targeting other races at all. Source: NBC Philadelphia
When this story first broke, there was plenty of talk on the comment threads about the club being "private." I still don't understand how anyone defends children being treated this way, but the issues are even bigger than psychological scarring. You don't get to call yourself a private club if you expect access to public dollars and favorable tax consideration. The Valley Swim Club is registered as a "not for profit." Racial discrimination is illegal. It's looking more and more like the Valley Swim Club broke the law to satisfy the personal prejudices of some of its members.

As my son would say....Duuuhh! Ray Charles could see that it was racial descrimination. It is beyond sad that in 2009 we are still, still dealing with this ignorance. Only now, they try to disguise it or rearrange the wording to make it appear to be something other than what it is. Evil! I think they should be made an example out of. This will discourage other organizations with the same mindset to think twice. This is just another reminder that we have to do things for ourselves and by ourselves to develop and maintain a strong sense of pride and ownership that we already possess. Not to exclude anyone, that would make us just like them...It's time for us to do for us. We shouldn't always look for or even expect a handout. Let's move forward....together.

I agree with arjai. I personally don't care if you have an exclusive club for whites only. If that's your thing cool. I just think we as blacks should do the same thing. We have too much financial power in America to fight to get in where our dollars and input is not welcomed.

You are right. I also think that we should go back to seperate water fountains. Black & White only. I also think that blacks should start their own businesses and cater to each other. Whites have enough money they don't need blacks money. Everyone know that blacks are the largest population of consumers. Whoops forget all of that. I forgot it is the whites that loan the money for the businesses. Lets just get back to peace and love.

All of the citizens of nation is entitled to the same liberties & are bound by the same laws ! Regardelss of who breaks the rules , or why they broke the rules . No one can be exempt white or black ! Any institution that therefore violates those laws even for public funds , must be held accountable ! And though some people prefer a white only or black only environment in which to live , work , & play , it is still immoral in America or any where else in the world to think that some how you have the exclusive legal & moral right to segregate yourself from a free world ! On the other hand , as a technicality ,Having Private clubs & obtaining private property is one thing , but if that privacy harbors hatred and animosity where people can come and bathe in their ignorance & conspire against another group or person then that private club or private property is no longer entitled to be private ! Isnt this what we say to terrorist ?

These racist cowards will always find ways to keep Blacks from being included. Like brother Malcolm X said: Usually when people are sad, they don't do anything. They just cry over their condition. But when they get angry, they bring about a change. Let make change by stop trying to be with these White racist clowns. Build up our own. Support our own. Help our own.

There would be no embarrassment if we had our own facilities. Demise of Black businesses is because we have rushed to spend our billions of dollars “at the mall” and other white owned businesses. How much income comes from Wal-Mart to your community? How many of us go to other communities with our tax dollars to shop at Wal-Mart?
Check out Collective Banking Group. If there were Collective Banking Groups all over the country holding billions of Black monies, to fund Black enterprises we could move our own social agendas forward.
Our monies are spread too widely among banks that abuse us through credit scores.
There has to be a pooling of our monies!!! There are no criticisms of Koreans and their banks, Japanese and their banks or other ethnically owned banks. WHY DO WE BANK AT BANK OF AMERICA, CHASE, CITI, CAPATOL ONE AND CREDIT UNIONS WITH NO INFLUENCE.
What if our social organizations, fraternities, sororities, had bids for their accounts on a national basis? Problem is they would lose their corporate sponsors who donate small sums compared to collective banking.
Financial groups would have total changes in attitude if they see a national POOLING OF BLACK MONEY. There would be a great fight to maintain the status quo, their American way of life, with Black money.

Yes, please lets do that. Get your own little black clubs and let the whites have their own little white clubs. Simple isn't it. Maybe when blacks let whites obtain funding via Negro College Fund, and the NAACP helps ALL the people except blacks, and Al and Jessie stop making blacks look like idiots and step forward when whites are discriminated against.....maybe just maybe black kids will be allowed to swim in white peoples PRIVATE pools. Why doesn't the black community build their OWN pools in their ghettos.

WILL JOB DISCRIMINATION CASES CONTINUE TO INCREASE IN THE OBAMA ERA?
Atlanta, GA Monica White like many Americans celebrated in November 2008 the historic election of Barack Obama as the first black president of the United States. She also had additional reason to celebrate having just been hired as the only black woman in senior management at DSC Logistics; an Illinois based third party logistics and distribution Management Company for Kellogg’s, Kimberly Clark, RJ Reynolds, Tetley Tea, and Smuckers with locations nationwide. Euphoric with the Obama promise for change she eagerly started her job as a human resources executive and one of the top 5% in America who make a $100,000 plus. Now seven months later that euphoric optimism and hope for a change in America has disappeared into despair and frustration after having been wrongfully terminated by her employer and now finding herself embroiled in an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) case.
She is one of the growing numbers of women and minorities who have filed a discrimination complaint with the EEOC for discrimination and retaliation. The process is often lengthy and uncertain. According to a March 12, 2009 online article published in DiversityInc, entitled, Job Discrimination Hits Record High: Is the Economy to Blame?, “ More people experienced workplace discrimination last year than ever before. New EEOC data shows 95,402 job-bias claims were filed last year, up 15 percent from the previous year.” Daryl C. Hannah, the article’s author points to the economy as one possible explanation for the increase in cases.
Still others believe that employers are unaware of discrimination policies and fail to employ human resource professionals who know and understand the federal guidelines. Others feel the old adage about minorities of, last hired and first fired especially applies in an economic downturn despite the election of Barack Obama. Some feel that this gave those who have a proclivity toward discrimination more fuel to do so out of anger over his election.
Meanwhile, Monica White can’t help but wonder if the Obama administration will become more aggressive toward companies who discriminate against employees. “I worked 24/7 for that company”, she says, “and this is how I am treated.” “After coming into the office from a conference trip I was told to pack up my stuff because I was being terminated.”
As the economy edges toward improving and the newness of the Obama election wears off there is only one thing certain and that according to Socrates, is change. Isn’t it ironic that this is the very platform that Barack Obama declared as the new mantra for his presidency?
