This video leads to the following questions as it pertains to BET:1) Who's making the decisions? I'd love to see what thought process goes into deciding to make R. Kelly your keynote performer right after he is accused of creating child pornography, or having Lil Wayne sing about wanting to have sex with every girl in the world while underage girls are dancing on stage. I don't hate BET, and I've done a great deal of work with them in the past, but I would like very much for them to explain to the public exactly how they operate.
2) BET is pushed to a higher (and sometimes unfair) standard: There is an expectation among African Americans that BET represent the interests of the community and chooses to play an honest role in uplifting black people. Is that really their job or are we asking too much of them? Bob Johnson once said that the "E" in "BET" stands for "entertainment", not "education." Was it fair for him to say that? Additionally, if BET focused on educational and positive images, would they be able to remain in business? Does Viacom, the company that owns BET, have some accountability to the black community, or should they just be there to make a profit?
3) Are we allowed to make fun of black people or is everything off limits? I admit that the characters Martin Lawrence and Jamie Foxx (Wanda and Sheneneh) brought back in order to do the video once made me laugh. I personally find no offense with the fact that Tyler Perry puts on a dress and wig to make money, since his films usually have a wide array of African American portrayals. When white men dress in drag, there is no accusation that they are undermining the entire white race. The only problem with ridiculous portrayals in black comedy is when that portrayal is the ONLY image being presented. When BET or Vh-1 is quick to show Flavor Flav, but passes over the chance to feature black doctors, black lawyers and black professors, then we have a problem. But at the end of the day, it's OK for black people to laugh, or even for white people to laugh at us every now and then. God knows that black people laugh at white folks every day of the week and it doesn't mean we're racially biased.
4) The use of the word "apes" was off the chain and incredibly inappropriate: Whatever BET executive thought it was O.K. to note that the film was brought to you by the producers of "Planet of the Apes" needs a serious lesson in conscientious portrayals of black women. After all the craziness that has taken place in media and politics over the past year, the last thing we need is for black women to be described as apes. We have to be smarter than that and BET executives should know better.
I don't have a problem with BET's existence. I also feel that BET carries a heavier social load than other media outlets that must simply find a way to remain profitable. I do wonder what kind of culture we've created with a generation of booty-shaking kids who think that life is all about "hoes, clothes" and Lil Wayne. Comedy should push our limitations, but not to the point of being irresponsible. BET - We've got to do better.

I too agree that BET must do better. BET displays in my opinion, negative exploitation of woman, disgraceful reward shows, offensive, and disrespectful, ghetto reality shows, and music videos? BET in my opinion went down hill. There is no news, no good educational programs for our young youths, and no positive shows period on there? That skit with Jamie and Martin was offensive to blacks and most of the skits that were done during the award show was appalling. I said to myself, "This was supposed to be a tribute to the late great Michael Jackson"? That tribute did not represent Michael at all. I only watched because, I wanted to see if BET would change? NOT?
That Lil Wayne and Drake were so inappropriate and disrespectful too having those little girls up there on stage like that. BET has that 106 N Park that is for the young youth and it upsets me when the show airs music videos and edits out the bad and inappropriate lyrics? BET don't care about our young youths, no not at all? I Wish there were more black owned networks like TV ONE? Now, that network I respect. Not just BET need to clean their acts but these comedians, artist, ect.. to change for the better!

Why complain about this skit now? BET showed this 2-3 days after MJ's death. As far as Martin Lawrence and Jaime Fox's characters, I'm not going to sit up here and front and lie. I used to laugh my butt off @ Sheneneh & Ugly Wanda from "In Living Color."
As far as BET's quality of programming, when was it ever good??? It never went downhill as BET never rose to the occasion. I feel it is a lost cause to complain about BET and what they do.

BV, I don't know where you guys have been but BET has been WET for a long time now, every since BJ sold out. Well, that's neither hear or there, what is here is that Jamie and Martin skit was funny to me. I'm a middle age woman w/ a sense of humor and those gals was what I watch on my TV screen over a decade ago and they made me laugh until I needed stitches. And if you ever watched these two shows, before Fox used them up and spit them out, then you to would have gotten the humor behind the short. Loosen up and don't hate the player, hate the wrong way WET play the game.

Why not teach our children how AMERICANS fought to ABOLISH slavery....NOT that the white man WAS RESPONSIBLE for slavery....THAT WOULD BE THE TRUTH!
The African people are THE ONES RESPONSIBLE for SLAVERY....NOT THE WHITE MAN. The white man abolished slavery in America.....HAS THE BLACK MAN DONE THE SAME FOR AFRICA????? Why doesnt the black community start teaching the TRUTH and QUIT teaching our children its ALL THE WHITE MANS FAULT??? WHy havent we focused our anger ABOUT SLAVERY towards Africa...WHERE SLAVERY STILL THRIVES....where the black man IS STILL SELLING THE BLACK CULTURE INTO SLAVERY???

Well if you want the real truth slavery has always been and will be until judgment day. And the truth of the slavery of our people is because of the wrath of God (the God of the real Israel) who forsook the love of god and started the worship of false gods read Deut 26-28

WHAT? I thought this conversation was about the skit on the BET awards? I just find your comments utterly ridiculous. Africans were not in America beating, lynching, and killing slaves. White Americans committed those acts. Africans did not force white men to enslave and torture human beings. Your comments are so unbelievable to me. What's wrong with you? Are you are serious?

I don't even watch BET unless "The Game"is on, all they show is videos that portray women as eye candy for men and other non sense that I care not to talk about. When asked if I saw xyz video I always say hell no if I want to see a half naked woman dance around I will take off my clothes and dance i front of my own mirror! If other Young ladies would boycott that mess the standards would have to change, but they been branwashed so much they think we are supposed to be looked at like that.

I am a 45 year old African American Female. I have not seen the movie yet, but looking forward to it. I think Shanana & Wanda are hilarious. I don't look for fictitious movies to or videos to teach our youth anything that is for the teachers, parents and other adults to do. I carry myself as a woman and that show my family friends and co-workers veiw. Lighten up every one

In my humble opinion, it was merely comedy and I enjoyed the skit. Personally, I smiled and chuckled throughout. I didn't take it personally as I know who I am as a person nor do I believe it was intended to characterized black women as a whole. In short, it merely two former television characters acting out together with the sole purpose of generating laughs. Lighten up and save the debates for a truly worthy cause.
Just my opinion...

That's exactly how I felt. I don't let other people's perception define me & I really don't care.
Martin & Jamie are the funniest, especially with these characters!
