Turns out that some of Michael Steele's GOP handlers are none too pleased with the outspoken leadership role Steele's carved out for himself. In particular, Steele stepped out in front of the health care reform debate by issuing a "seniors health care bill of rights" before getting approval from Republican congressional leaders. That prompted those leaders to call Steele into a meeting and "check" him:
GOP leaders, in a private meeting last month, delivered a blunt and at times heated message to RNC Chairman Michael Steele: quit meddling in policy. The plea was made during what was supposed to be a routine discussion about polling matters and other priorities in House Minority Leader John Boehner's office. But the session devolved into a heated discussion about the roles of congressional leadership and Steele, according to multiple people familiar with the meeting.Steele was taken aback by the comments from Boehner, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), Senate GOP Conference Chairman of Tennessee and Senate GOP Policy Chairman John Thune of South Dakota and grew defensive during the 10-minute discussion, according to two people in the room. First, the RNC stripped Steele of the authority to make big financial decisions. Now, GOP heavyweights are telling him to pipe down and do no more than what he's told to do. And support for Steele does not appear to be growing:
There are larger issues at hand, though, beyond a tense exchange over strategy. Since Steele took over the party earlier this year, congressional leaders and their staff have often cringed at the voluble chairman's gaffes and rolled their eyes at his unambiguous view that he alone leads the party.
"He's on a short leash here," said one top House GOP leadership aide.
At the same time, Steele and his backers can be annoyed at what they see as the know-it-all arrogance and even jealousy of some in their party's congressional wing.
I would defy anyone that it wasn't politically smart" to issue the bill of rights, said a Steele ally, arguing that it painted Democrats as hypocrites for wanting to cut Medicare after they've spent years accusing Republicans of wanting to do the same.
And there is some lingering resistance among the party's congressional leaders and their top aides to fully embrace Steele as chairman, the Steele associate said. Source: Politico.com
None of this surprises me, especially now, given that the hard right is the most powerful contingent in today's Republican party. In fact, I have never heard any GOP heavyweight (other than Newt Gingrich) echo Steele's stated goals of reaching out to communities of color to bring them into the Republican party. Have YOU?

I agree with some of the republicans policies but I just don't like the way the republicans are handling this national crisis and the way they are treating a seated president of the United States. Now on to mr. Steele. I think he and clarence thomas (chief justice) have alot to be accountable for in the black communities. I Know a elected offical is for all the people but these two guys seems to me to be against the black race.

I agree with you whole heartedly. Steele was an Uncle Tom from the very beginning. He never cared about Blacks. They just made him the chairman because they needed someone black to show the black community that we have blacks on our side too. I don't think it had anything to do with what he has done or achieved for the party.
I don't know how Clarence Thomas came into power. That was a little before my time. I was young and didn't understand the Anita Hill situation too much. However, what's right is right regardless of race. I can't comment on him. But it should come as no surprise, black people stabbing other black people in the back to get ahead with whites.

Hey Rick, last time I checked, the head of the RNC or Supreme Court Justice are not elected officials.

Why are Micheal Steele and Clarence Thomas not "black" enough for you? Is it because they do not subscribve to the "I am a victim" mentality so many blacks subscribe to? Is it because they have succeeded in life with out subcribing to the welfare hand out? Is it because they demand that the black race stand up for themselves and become RESPONSIBLE for their actions and their lives without blaming society, the white man and every one else for the condition of their lives, their race? Blacks really need to get off of the racist crutch the have been hobbling along on for so long. Rid themselves of the "I am a victim " that the Democrats and liberals have spoon fed them with for so long. I line their own pockets I might add. Look at the condition of black communities. Do you know that Martin Luther King was a Republican? He never subscribed to the " I am a victim" mentality. He called for responsibility within the community! Do you know that a Republican President put an end to slavery? Wake up!

Hey Rick, How is Steele or Clarence Thomas against the black race? Is it because it appears that they do not "stand up for" the black race? Or is it, now repeat it to yourself, that they consider themselves "Americans" and not Afro-Americans? Does a person of a particular race owe his race something? I consider myself an American, and a decendant of Irish and Italian immigrants... My success is owed to my COUNTRY that has given me oppurtunity, not a race, not a politician, not a cause. Wake up, and point out losers as individuals, not as a race...Thats the problem with many people.... They see being part of a race as an excuse.... Man Up People...

So, you're saying that Steele along with Thomas are against the black race? That means they wish to see their race climb out of the sewer their cohorts want them to stay so they get the votes for the democratic party.
Nice thinking, but maybe, just maybe some blacks are tired of being used by the democrats. It seems you fit right into that chorus so I assume you too are a social democrat as thats exactly where todays democratic party is and seems to like it.

This message is for "Kay." She made a ignorant comment on 10/7/09 at 8:58 am. Do you realize or are you so clueless and/or ignorant to realize that Blacks come from all parts of life with different views and beliefs. Some of us are rich, middle class, and poor. Who believes in that "I am a victim." Yea maybe in 1960's and before because the facts proved they were. Can I remind you of the lynching, unfair school systems, unfair housing system, etc. However, that was past and now I would like you to join us in 21st. century. You also said look at conditions of "Black Community" ok what Black Community, the last I looked the so call Black comunity consits of Blacks, Whites, and Hispanics, etc. Please realize that Blacks live in rich, middle class and poor communities, just like Whites. Please learn you darn history, and don't pass false rumors on MLK or Michael Steele. Now what I am tired of are ignorant people like you always claiming to be "VICTIMS" of Blacks.

Rick what you must understand is with Steele it is not about race, with him it is about $$$. I have seen people like him all my long life. He is taking advantage of the republicans for the money. He cares not about anyone or anything but his own self intrest. The republicans are an easy mark to him. It comes down to it he is a hustler.
