Turns out that some of Michael Steele's GOP handlers are none too pleased with the outspoken leadership role Steele's carved out for himself. In particular, Steele stepped out in front of the health care reform debate by issuing a "seniors health care bill of rights" before getting approval from Republican congressional leaders. That prompted those leaders to call Steele into a meeting and "check" him:
GOP leaders, in a private meeting last month, delivered a blunt and at times heated message to RNC Chairman Michael Steele: quit meddling in policy. The plea was made during what was supposed to be a routine discussion about polling matters and other priorities in House Minority Leader John Boehner's office. But the session devolved into a heated discussion about the roles of congressional leadership and Steele, according to multiple people familiar with the meeting.Steele was taken aback by the comments from Boehner, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), Senate GOP Conference Chairman of Tennessee and Senate GOP Policy Chairman John Thune of South Dakota and grew defensive during the 10-minute discussion, according to two people in the room. First, the RNC stripped Steele of the authority to make big financial decisions. Now, GOP heavyweights are telling him to pipe down and do no more than what he's told to do. And support for Steele does not appear to be growing:
There are larger issues at hand, though, beyond a tense exchange over strategy. Since Steele took over the party earlier this year, congressional leaders and their staff have often cringed at the voluble chairman's gaffes and rolled their eyes at his unambiguous view that he alone leads the party.
"He's on a short leash here," said one top House GOP leadership aide.
At the same time, Steele and his backers can be annoyed at what they see as the know-it-all arrogance and even jealousy of some in their party's congressional wing.
I would defy anyone that it wasn't politically smart" to issue the bill of rights, said a Steele ally, arguing that it painted Democrats as hypocrites for wanting to cut Medicare after they've spent years accusing Republicans of wanting to do the same.
And there is some lingering resistance among the party's congressional leaders and their top aides to fully embrace Steele as chairman, the Steele associate said. Source: Politico.com
None of this surprises me, especially now, given that the hard right is the most powerful contingent in today's Republican party. In fact, I have never heard any GOP heavyweight (other than Newt Gingrich) echo Steele's stated goals of reaching out to communities of color to bring them into the Republican party. Have YOU?

In truth I don't think anyone should feel sorry for Mr. Steel but, I do think we as black people should be angry that the republican party should feel so bold as to be out right rasist toward michel steel in the media as well as in action and would attempt to devide this great nation over outdated ideas and unjust belifes open your eyes america we as black people will not sit back and take the abuse anymore and those clowns who still feel as they have to kiss the rear end of a white man to get ahead YOU are a Fool. we can work together white people but the days of real black men and woman bowing down are over we here and we are not going anywhere

Please use the grammar tool when writing. No one sees your skin color. Peeps see others for what they are.
Educated or not at least pretend as if you are.

Let's not forget that Steele was not the first choice for this position, he was third. Hr got the position by default because the other two had personal issues. It did not take long for those really in power to remind him of his Blackness. I don't feel sorry for him because he has been a very vocal critic of everything Obama does in order to tow the party line. I have noticed that when he is with other Black people in a discussion he tones it down a little bit. If the plan was to bring Black people to the party by putting a Black face out there, they have failed miserably. I think it shows how little republicans think of Black people that we will run to where a Black person is without looking at the issues. The only time you see faces of color at Republican gatherings is when there is an election and then they get paraded in front of the cameras. Everyone has that moment when we are reminded that we are Black and Mr. Steel you have just received yours.

Running to the colored candidate and not the issuses is why Obama is President today. White peeps didn't elect him because he is/was the best man. They felt guilty and wanted to show they can vote for a black man. Isn't that the same thing you say about Michael Steele?

Too all of you liberals posting on this. You notice that no Conservatives have posted here because this is a bull shit post. None of this has been verified. I figured that you liberals would find some way to squash Michael Steels credibilty. Sorry its not going to work. Thats part of any team, is having discussions, not just agreeing with what the rest of the party do no matter what the issue like the Democrats. If Obama said lets all go and jump off a cliff, 90% of the Dems would just jump no questions ask. Typically when someone is losing a fight, they will pull the race card, which is what you are all trying to do. Next thing the Dems are trying to do is make it look like the Republican party is in disaray. Well, refer back to my prior statement. Republicans are not going to agree with each other just because they are Republicans. It confusses all of you Kool-Aid drinking Dems.to see how a group, has discussions, makes decisions based on facts, not following the talking points passed out to the democrats each morning.

REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS BOTH HAVE FORGOTTEN WHAT THEY WERE ELECTED FOR: THEY ARE REPRESENTATIVES FOR US THE PEOPLE AND THEY ARE TO WORK TOGETHER FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE COUNTRY. THEY ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOBS AND AS FAR AS THE REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP, ALL THEY ASK FOR IS "MONEY" AND ACCOMPLISH NOTHING. WE THE PEOPLE WHO PAY THE FREIGHT WITH OUR TAXES, DESERVE MORE AND I DON'T KNOW, BUT IF YOU ARE NOT DOING YOUR JOB THE NEXT STEP IS OUT THE DOOR ANYWHERE ELSE, BUT WASHINGTON. YOU FIGURE IT OUT. WE NEED 4 TO 6 YEAR TERMS WITHOUT PENSIONS AND HOSPITALIZATION FOR LIFE. HOW ABOUT THAT MR PRESIDENT?????

This is democrat spin & nothing more. Steele is doing a great job as RNC chief. That account of the meeting is BS. You guys just don't like it because it's hard to label Steele's criticism of obama as "racist" like you do everyone else's.
Welcome to the USSA. America is waking up & seeing that the king is "nekked"! Obama won't even be on the ticket in 2012.
