Heather Ellis of Kennett, Mo., has quite a story to tell. It all started nearly three years ago in a local Wal-Mart.
Ellis was shopping in the store with a cousin, and the two temporarily parted ways to find the shortest line. Seeing that the other line was moving faster, Ellis went to get in line with her cousin.
She was accused of cutting the line by a store employee, who then notified the security guard. According to Ellis, she was shoved by another customer, had her items pushed to the side and was shortchanged when she finally checked out. The police affidavit states that Ellis was belligerent, loud, abusive and cursing when she was told to leave the store by the assistant manager.
Ellis' aunt, Lily Blackmon, received a frantic call from her son and claims that when she arrived, her daughter's head was being repeatedly banged against the police car as she told officers that she wasn't resisting arrest. Blackmon, who was a probation officer in the town for 11 years, asked the officers why her niece was getting such rough treatment.
"I said, 'What is going on?' And all [the officer] could say was, 'She cursed,'" said Blackmon.
Ellis was charged with disturbing the peace, trespassing, resisting arrest and two counts of assaulting a police officer. She was then offered a plea deal by Dunklin County Prosecutor Stephen Sokoloff. The prosecutor offered to drop the felony counts to one misdemeanor of disturbing the peace, as long as Ellis signed the plea deal. Her aunt claims that the deal was offered so their family wouldn't file a lawsuit.
Ellis refused to take the plea deal, claiming that she wasn't willing to admit to something she didn't do; however, 11 months later, the misdemeanor counts were dropped, which seemed to be good news. The good news, though, was replaced with something even more disturbing.
It turned out that the misdemeanor counts had been replaced by felonies. Ellis now faces 15 years in prison if convicted. When her aunt went to prosecutor Sokoloff to find out what happened, Sokoloff allegedly told her, "Mrs. Ellis, when you get through, I don't care what you say. You may as well take my way out. My way was the plea bargain. If you don't take that way, I can assure you, you'll never win in here."
Ellis claims that her pending convictions have cost her two jobs and the chance to enter medical school, but she still refuses to sign the plea deal. Racism recently entered in to the story when Ellis was handed KKK cards from a Kennett police officer warning her about her actions. The cards stated, "You've just been paid a social visit by the Ku Klux Klan; the next visit will not be social." The officer claims that he only showed the family the cards to make them aware of the situation. Since that time, and after a dramatic plea for support, people have come to help Heather. The site www.SaveHeatherEllis.com has emerged, and her father appeared on CNN on the 15th of October to tell her story.
Dr. Towanna Freeman, a management consultant, argues that Walmart was to blame for the unfortunate sequence of events: "No matter what angle you take on this case, it all started when Walmart failed a valued customer and it's Wal-Mart that owes Ms. Heather Ellis a written apology."
Dr. Freeman goes on to argue that Walmart should have cleared up the disturbance as soon as it occurred, rather than allowing it to get out of hand.
When it comes to the trial of Heather Ellis, the bottom line is this: This young woman's future should not be in jeopardy over this incident. If the prosecutor's office could drop significant felony counts down to one misdemeanor, then they can drop the charges altogether. This may also be a case of what I call, "You got the wrong black person syndrome," in which police treat a black suspect a certain way because they believe the person is either uneducated or without influence. Most cases of police abuse go unreported or without accountability by the police department. Once they found out that Ellis was a college student, this may have led to the surprisingly generous concessions made in the original plea deal. There appears to be a power trip in this case, in which the prosecutor (like the one in the Jena 6 case) seems to feel that he has the right to destroy this young woman's life over an argument at Wal-Mart. I don't think we should let that happen. Rev. Sharpton and I will have something interesting to talk about this week.

The police gave this woman a card from the KKK. The police is working with KKK. There is no doubt they are racists. The card in of itself is a threat. So it is a KKK town with a bunch of KKK police. They don't have to have a reason to want to hurt someone non white.

Daniel:
You know a Police officer handed her a card with a threat from the KKK and you wanna say there is no racism involved here? I don't mean to offend, attitudes like that are why we still have these problems.

Gossman,
Now tell me, when did the police officer hand her a threat from the KKK? It wasn't at the scene of the crime was it? I was not trying to debate anyone on that, if the police officer did in fact hand her a card from the KKK in an attempt to threaten her, there is no excuse for that. With that being said, I just don't feel like this started out as a incident of racism, I think it had more to do with a temper. Then you add a whole lot of American News Media spin, and let it simmer for a year or so, and presto, you have a "Racist Incident", and "Woman Face 15 Years For Cutting In Line..." That just doesn't seem like the whole truth to me, the police don't take you to jail for cutting in line at Wal-Mart. I don't mean to sound like I don't feel for her, because Lord knows I've been there, I have trouble with my temper from time to time as well, but at some point you have to stop making excuses and take responsibility for your actions. Let me close with this, if this incident was reversed, for example a black cop, and a white shopper that got out of hand, how do you think this would have played out? I don't think it would have been called a incident of racism, do you?

NO. it isn't right for someone to cut in line, but step back and take a look at the whole picture. should you get 15 years for it, I hope not . and where is the real problem coming from ? WAL-MART if you will do just a little searching the web. you will find wal-mart loves to call the police over very stupid things and get a lot of people in big trouble with the law, which cost them a lot of money in legal fees. just a few examples, pics of lil kids playing in the tub, parent spanks child misbehaving and there are pages of women and kids that have been kidnapped / attempted kidnappings. is wal-mart really a good place to shop???? and as for the KKK. making threats to this women , what are they even getting into this for , this should NOT be a black / white problem, the chicken fide cowered with there huds on to hide there faces should understand this or something similar could just as easy happened to there wife , mother , or granny. ( stupid jerks ) they need to stand up for wright and wrong instead of black and white.

The press and the NAACP are covering up the truth here . They want to paint a pic of a sweet preachers daughter who has been treated bad by whites .
Look what I found on “sweet” Heather Renae Ellis. Check out just ONE page of her arrest record here !!
https://www.courts.mo.gov/casenet/cases/charges.do
This is NOT the first time she’s been in trouble for being violent , it is NOT the first time she’s resisted arrest in that town .
She makes black people look bad , she makes the NAACP look bad ( and they don’t need help with that )She gets in trouble again and she plays the race card and every black in the country runs to her side . She has a history of this sort of thing . So why is the press not reporting that ??? Why is the press and the NAACP helping a criminal start a another race war ???

Act like an animal, get treated like an animal. Civility goes a long way. Besides you have to actually be human to be treated like one. Looks like a trip to the big U for the sheboon.

While I don't agree that Heather Ellis should face 15 years for this, I don't find her as blameless as she lets on. Now if the police hurled racial slurs and mistreated her, they should be fired. No if ands or buts about it. However, did she break in line? Did she get belligerent when called on it? Was she asked to leave? If so, why didn't she? When the police were summoned, did she comply?

If she resisted arrest then she should be found guilty. Stop bringing race into this. The police officers will not lie in court and if she has no record, trhe judge will probably give her probation if she is in fact found guilty. People who. use race only have one agenda, divide us in order to gain popularity and monetary rewards. Remember 2 wrongs do not make a write. If the customers treated her wrong, that doesn't give Ms. Ellis the right to act the way she was accuesd of acting towards the police. By acting a fool and bringing race and hatred into this issue cuts us down as a person. Dr. King didn't want violence, greats like Maya Angelou doesn't want violence, and other greats who I worship don't want arguing and bickering back and forth. How President Obama was brought up is a shame. Look at where we are as a nation in 2009 and think where we were in 1960's. Our youth need to understand what we sacraficed for them to live in a peaceful world. May God be with you all, for you will have to answer for your life when your soul leaves this world.

I also was a victim of police butility. It happened when I called the police because my ex-boyfriend hit me and punched my son which was 5 years old at that time.Basically because I didn't want to be with him anymore. So I called the police because he was acting out of control the police came which I thought was going to protect me was listening to what my ex-boyfriend had to say and not me, told me to shut up he is the man of the house now my ex lied and said I scratched him. When as soon as the police came i told them that he took my phone from me during my 911 call and punched my son when he was trying to help me get my phone back from him, they disreguarded that even when i asked them to ask the neighbors and question my son he responded no and if i keep crying and talking without being told to speak he is going to arrest me which he did. Even though i was battered by my ex with visiable burises he stayed behind, they was going to give my son to him knowing that he was not the father, i begged and pleaded for the officers not to give him my child which they got a kick out of my begging. Its more to this story, but basically i was put in prison shoved out the door like i was resistanting arrest i told him that he hid my personal belongs my car keys wallet etc cause i can't find it he said that he stated he didn't have it and he believes him. The officer didn't read me my rights and shoved me in the car. I told him I never been arrested he stated its a first time for everything and welcome to georgia, than I asked him why am i getting arrested when he hit me and punched my son he slammed the divider. As a result i was robbed by my ex, he was driving around in my car and went through my personal infomation, i had to call in like a criminal every two weeks lost a job that i was ready to start and have this incident on my background because my ex didn't come on the court date or answer any of the procecuters calls. So I was arrested for being to emotional, and put false charges on me so the officer could make an arrest. Guys it is more to this story that i had to cut out not enough room u guys wouldn't believe happened. If i had the money for a lawyer i would sue that officer as well as the county.

If she sues them all, and it looks like she will win, Wal-mart and the other losers in the case will settle with her for big bucks and she will have to sign a gag order. No one will ever hear of how much she got except for her bank where she deposits the checks.
