Cornel West on Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Bishop T.D. Jakes

Princeton Professor Cornel West ('Race Matters,' 'Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud') has been known to criticize black leaders for the gulf that can open up between their rhetoric and their actions on behalf of the most vulnerable members of our community.

So of course, when Black Voices got Dr. West in our studio, we had to ask him his thoughts about Rev. Jesse Jackson ("he doesn't like to linger linger, and organize, and mobilize the way King and Abernathy did"), Rev. Al Sharpton ("he's now become almost an insider with the Obama administration"), and Bishop T.D. Jakes ("I used to be very critical of him in terms of moral courage").

But West had far more than critiques for these three men; two of whom helped pave the way for a black man to win the American presidency, and one who gives spiritual guidance to many thousands.

Jackson has got "a kind of lyrical genius, and he is a masterful political strategist," observed West. "I've tried to learn from his genius."

Sharpton, who West supported in his presidential bid), is "fundamentally committed to what he's doing...beginning with highlighting police brutality which I think is still one of the most important issues...And of course he's now become almost an insider with the Obama administration. He's come a long way in terms of his ability to speak with power," said West.

And despite the fact he initially thought Jakes was "too close to George Bush, and he didn't really want to speak out boldly," West noted that more recently he and Jakes have worked on projects together. "And, he's even been to Venezuela," West added. "So [if] you get Bishop TD Jakes down [to Hugo] Chavez territory, you know you got some change and transformation taking place."
