During one of his campaign stops last year, then-democratic candidate Barack Obama gave a rally speech that was interrupted by a group of hecklers holding up signs in the balcony of a college gymnasium.
Nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary until the television cameras focused on the group. They were black people shouting out anti-Obama slogans, holding up signs decrying Obama for, among other things, not being "down" with black people. I remember thinking what do they want black people to do? Vote for McCain and keep bitching?
So now, a group of brothers calling themselves the Black Is Back Coalition staged a demonstration declaring the president, "white power in blackface." I wonder if these are the same dudes in the gym who got quickly shuffled off by security.
The coalition said:
We recognize that Barack Hussein Obama is white power in blackface," civil rights activist Omali Yeshitela, chairman of the Black is Back coalition, which arranged the protest, called into a megaphone as the group marched outside the mansion's gates. "He is a tool of our imperialist enemies, and we demand our freedom. And we demand that Obama withdraw all the troops from Afghanistan right now.
I remember cats like this in college, whom we jokingly called the "blackness police." Their mission was to serve as a barometer of who was being black enough, as though there were a set of black standards and practices that all African Americans had to follow, lest they run the risk of being called out.
They also had this to say about the president:
We're not satisfied with him, and...this hope and change rap has not been a reality for black people," Baron told AFP during the demonstration. "We are glad that Barack Obama broke up the white male monopoly on the White House, but we were not looking for a change in the occupant of the White House from white to black, we were looking for change in foreign policies and domestic policies.
Now, don't get me wrong. If anybody should hold the president's feet to the fire -- no matter who holds the title -- it should be black folks. There is a long history in this country of unfulfilled promises and rhetoric coming from the White House, which left black folks hanging. So Obama should not be excluded from criticism -- when it is warranted.
And, yes, as difficult as the task may be, the Obama administration should work steadfastly on solutions in Afghanistan, which will expedite the safe return of our troops -- just as he promised.
The same people, though, who staged the demonstration in front of the White House could have traveled just a few miles from it and saw everything from dysfunctional families to egregious poverty to wanton street violence all involving black people. But as I do my research on this coalition, I'm finding that it has nothing to say about its own direct efforts concerning these issues.
In college, the blackness police quickly turned from militants to minstrels, and that's what this "coalition" is doing.
As much as I agree with some of the points they've put forward, such as freeing Mumia Abu-Jamal, ending urban gentrification and promoting real justice for black people, having marches and shouting through bullhorns really doesn't do it for me anymore. So the question I ask is what action have you taken? What child have you fed? What young man have you given help in getting a job? What pregnant young girl have you helped get prenatal care? Those are the things groups such as the Black Panthers did back in the day. They were about far more than just marches. They were about action.
Going back to my college example, there was lots of student activity among blacks on my campus. Many students participated in canned food and clothing drives, raised funds for the poor and infirm, tutored local children and helped to recruit more minority students.
With the blackness police, though, if we weren't walking around donned in the same Korean-made African garb they wore, shouting regurgitated quotes from Stokely Carmichael and Malcolm X, then we were sellouts. These same dudes would never lift a single finger to actually uplift black people. So to me, their actions are suspect.
They could quote Malcolm endlessly, but they apparently failed to read the instructions he laid out in the latter chapters of his autobiography about self-help.
So, yeah, the coalition, like all black people and all people for that matter, should scrutinize the government, but they lose credibility when they say that Obama is letting black people down when they themselves do nothing to help those within shouting distance.

President Barack Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder, Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon, Congressman William "Thieving" Jefferson, Congressman Walter Tucker, former 2nd District LA County Supervisor Yvonne "Brentwood" Burke, no good 2nd District Supervisor Mark "Little Napoleon" Ridley Thomas, etc., and/or other Democratic Party affiliated misfit Black elected representatives are indeed the problem.
"It is always easy to blame somebody else or another race for our own mistakes. When inner-city children/teens (black, latino, or white) choose to commit crimes (get arrested), choose to drop out of school, or choose to have sex and create more government babies on welfare it is our OWN fault - NOT the white man! The REAL problem with the
African American community is failure to look in the mirror and identify the true cause of our problems: ourselves." by Daniel
Indeed as Black people we are our own worst enemies. However, "white ollar criminals" in most every community do much more damage, and such damage negatively impacts many more individuals than that of any gangmember, neighborhood street thug, etc.
Far too often often, the little guy or gal are condemned, while individuals who betray the Black community in a huge way, who destroy the future for many individuals, are given a free pass, honored, a street or park may be named after them, by the very people who are harmed by these misfits, meaning the entire Black may face extinction due to this "madness".
This is easy see in communities formerly predominated by Black people such as South Central Los Angeles, Compton, Oakland, New Orleans,
and/or other communities to where a failing no good elected Black leadership, has made it easier for Caucasian re-gentrification, illegal immigrants, undocumented immigrants, and/or legal immigrants, etc., etc., to displace U.S. born Black people in gainful employment, holding policy making positions in government, private industry,
schools, prominent community organizations, the purchase and ownership of real property, be it residential, commercial, and/or industrial, in many communities formerly predominated by U.S. born
Black people.
The failure of our own elected Black leaders, President Barack Obama, Black lawyers, etc., inclusive, to serve the best interests of truly
law abiding U.S. born Black men, women and/or their siblings, by protecting our U.S. Constitutional rights and/or respective State
Constitutonal rights, is making it easier for the Black community to be the fastest dying most regressive community in the U.S.
...it is disgusting that so many of our leaders, Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon, Congressman William "Thieving" Jefferson, Congressman Walter Tucker, former 2nd District LA County Supervisor Yvonne "Brentwood" Burke, no good 2nd District Supervisor Mark "Little Napoleon" Ridley Thomas, etc., all of whom are affiliated with the Democratic Party (The Original Party of Slavery in the U.S.) choose to use such a valued position of influence for their own ersonal and selfish gain, use false pretenses to hold elected office, join ranks with the perpetrators at the expense of their
Constituency, play games of deceit when petitioned for redress by law abiding Black people violated by the atrocities of government.
As U.S. born Black people lose ground because of our own incompetence, you can be rest assured newly arrived illegal/undocumented/legal immigrants who promote their own into the
position of elected office holder, who displace U.S. born Black men, women, and/or their siblings won't be following this cab of ignorance, and they won't be the first to step up to the plate to protect the posterity of U.S. born Black men, women, and/or their siblings.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZRJCs34g0k
It is disgusting and very disturbing, that so many misguided U.S. born Black people are making excuses for what President Barack Obama
can't do, while the Black community continues to be the least represented community in the U.S.
"There are cases when an individual has been wrongfully treated by his government and about the only way, unless the individual resorts
to court, and even in some cases the courts are not able to give proper relief, the only area or avenue open to the individual is through his representative. When you find a bona fide error has been made, I suggest that you make a maximum effort to remedy it. This I feel is a vital and important function of those of us in the House of
Representatives."
In instances where the government has egregiously violated the lawful rights of the citizen, just as the above paragraph states, the courts can't give proper relief without the input of a responsible elected representative, namely an elected representative who through "Consanguinity" has a connection to the truly oppressed.
These individuals fail to realize that elected officials, especially the President of the U.S., play an important part, in making it certain that "Equal Justice and Protection Under Law" becomes a reality, for individuals of their same ethnicity.
Consanguinity ("con- (with/together) sanguine (blood) -ity (noun marker)") refers to the property of being from the same kinship as
another person. In that respect, consanguinity is the quality of being descended from the same ancestor as another person."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Declaration_of_Independence
"We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity." an excerpt taken from the "Declaration of Independence"
This should be especially the case, of any President who is of the same ethnic heritage, because the term "consanguinity" makes that
association.

The Execution/Enforcement of U.S. Constitutional protections is so important because without such protection, any individual or group of individuals egregiously violated by truly serious atrocities of
government can lose the lawful right work without just cause, have wages or property taken from them without just cause, be deprived of their freedom, lose one or more family members to unwarranted
government supervision, be maimed without cause by rogue police officers, or even more extreme be killed by the atrocities of government.....
........all with impunity!
U.S. born Black men, women, and/or their siblings, being the most Constitutionally misrepresented, under-represented, or void of competent representation communities within the U.S., faces becoming extinct in the U.S.
Extinction is well on its way in many communities formerly predominated by U.S. born Black people, who now no longer exist, or the chances of holding on have been diminished due to the huge void of competent representation that exists in the Black community!

I was a speaker at the Black is Back rally. I am probably one of the most moderate supporters. My rhetoric is not quite as harsh as many.
I read many of the comments here and I find the conversation interesting, but a bit disjointed. I guess that is how these internet comment streams go.
1st I want people to know that I love the US. It is my home with all it faults. So I do the work I do for love of country, but first and foremost because I believe in peace and justice and I want my country to live up to its ideals which I believe if done would help move the world to a more peaceful and just place. I also voted for Barrack Obama.
When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made his famous Riverside Church speech against the war in Vietnam he mad a number of statements that are still true today.
"I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a 'thing-oriented' society to a 'person-oriented' society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered."
"They asked if our own nation wasn't using massive doses of violence to solve its problems, to bring about the changes it wanted. Their questions hit home, and I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today -- my own government."
He referred to two of the triplets in his Nobel Peace Prize speech in 1964.
"I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality."
Today the US continues to be the greatest exporter of violence in the world. This included export of weapons of war. More times than not, many more times than not the targets of that violence are non-White people.
The poorest nations in the world are non-White nations and until recently with the rise of the Asian economic tigers with China and Japan most all wealth flowed to the European and Eurocentric nations. Race is a social created and used to justify specific patterns of wealth distribution and access. In this way race is really no different than the feudal system. Both are social constructs and both explain why resources and privileges are afforded one group verses another. Both shaped those living in the systems actions and ways of thinking. The peasants were no less talented than the royals, no less smart, no less deserving of the fruits of their labor and the pleasures of life. But they did not know this so they stayed in their place just as the royals believed themselves superior and ordained by God to live as they did and acted accordingly. Many Black people today act as expected based on racial stereotypes and social structures created for that outcome. These Blacks, like the feudal peasants, are trapped by a cell built around their minds that will not allow them to see themselves as nothing but less and their place as it is. Many Whites equally yoked to the ideas of race, explain Black poverty and self destructive actions as simple choices and White prosperity as a natural outcome of hard work and good choices. They deny the structures put in place to herd Blacks down corridors of despair and the system that places access before many more Whites by creating specific expectations and awarding and or treating Whites differently than Blacks for the same actions. The drug war is a prime example of this phenomenon.
We all are caught up in a grand scheme that we must dismantle and I think some of this discussion is caught up in the minutiae of the structure making the conversation a bit convoluted because it cannot be adequately examined with our first understating the forces shaping those details.
How does this relate to Obama? At this time Obama is a major administrator of a system that while changing continues to use race as a justification for resource distribution and access. In his capacity as President of the United States he is expected to protect this system and to use violence when ever necessary to do so. This violence more times than not, many more times than not will be directed at non-White people who by just or unjust means are rebelling against a system that is not looking out for their best interest. US general economic policy has always been one of expansion. Manifest destiny is the prime example. U.S. foreign policy for generations has been one of spreading our free market capitalism ideology using the promotion of democracy as cover. The spread of free market doctrine is an attempt to expand and maintain economic dominance to keep resources and profits flowing in a particular direction. While it is true that more non-White people have access to resources and have relative prosperity than ever before, the basis for the system continues to be race and the outcomes continue to disproportionately favor White people and those who stand in support of the system. Dark skinned bodies and lives are disproportionately crushed in the pursuit of profit. White lives and bodies are crushed as well, however because of the myth of race and its ancillary racial expectations and stereotypes, poor Whites feeling the same pressures and oppression as poor Blacks will not unite with dark skinned people because their minds are equally trapped by the myth of race and the reality via the racial constructs that they have a different set of paths to prosperity. What they do not realize that the opportunities are limited and it is best to dismantle the myth because at best they are minor royals most of whom will never ascend.
The fact that the current system is based on the myth of race and disproportionately awards White people at the expense of non-White people makes the critique of Obama as White power in Black face, while harsh rhetoric, fairly accurate in the system’s operation and outcome. I do not think this is Obama’s intent, but it is the case.
Lastly, this is not an apology for terrorism of terrorism or al-Qaeda’s dream for a new Caliphate. This dream is another structure to justify distribution of wealth and resources and will be no less harsh than the current system. It will simply be a new myth and those disproportionally crushed or awarded by it will have different set of distinguishable characteristics be it physical or religious.
Quoting King’s Nobel Prize Speech again:
I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits.
____________
Not until we have a revolution of values to bring about the above vision based on recognition and veneration of our shared humanity will all myths to justify oppressive economic distribution be discarded to the trash bin of history. I have the audacity to believe this can be done and this is what I work to do.

I THINK THE BLACK COALITION ARE THE REAL BLACK FACES WHO HAVE THE WHITE AGENDA OKAY. YOU ARE CRITICIZING HIM MORE THAN THE RIGHT WING REPUBLICANS ARE AND THE WHITE ONLY DEMOCRATS IN THE WHITE HOUSE. ARE YOU GETTING PAID BY SOMEONE TO CRITICIZE HIM OR WHAT? AS FOR ALL THE NEGATIVITY I'VE READ TODAY; YOU ALL NEED TO GIVE MY PRESIDENT A CHANCE. THIS MESS DIDN'T GET THIS WAY IN "A YEAR" SO WHY ARE YOU ALL LOOKING FOR MIRACLES IN "A YEAR" FOR HIM ALONE TO GET THIS COUNTRY OUT OF "THE MESS" THAT WAS HANDED DOWN TO HIM FOR YEARS?
