Man Discovers Charles Manson is His Father

Charles Manson

Twelve years ago, Los Angeles DJ Matthew Roberts, who was adopted, began a quest to find his biological parents. Roberts, 41, grew up in Rockford, Ill., and when he was 10 years old, his sister divulged the fact that he was adopted. Roberts loved his adoptive parents but often wondered about his roots. His curiosity set him on a course that led to a surprising ending.

The peaceful, non-violent, free-spirited vegan contacted a social services agency a few years ago to help him find his biological mother, Terry, who lived in Wisconsin. As time went on, Terry spoon-fed Roberts parts of his life such as his real first and middle names, but she never told him his surname.

Eventually, Terry summoned up the courage to tell her son who his real father is: Charles Manson, quite possibly the most infamous serial killer in the world. "I didn't want to believe it. I was frightened and angry. It's like finding out that Adolf Hitler is your father," Roberts told The Sun. "I'm a peaceful person, trapped in the face of a monster." Soon after learning about his birth father, Roberts said he sank into a deep depression.

In the summer of 1969, Manson and his commune followers left a trail of blood and gore in Los Angeles. A total of nine home-invasion murders were committed. Among Manson's victims was the beautiful actress Sharon Tate, who was pregnant and married to director Roman Polanski.

According to Terry, she fell for the charismatic cult leader and followed him to San Francisco. She alleges that Mason raped her in 1967 during a drug-induced orgy. When Terry gave birth to Roberts in March 1968, she immediately gave him up for adoption. Terry admits that her son bears a striking resemblance to Manson, who is serving a life sentence at Corcoran State Prison in California.

Still, Roberts felt compelled to correspond with his infamous dad. Manson, 75, replied via letters and postcards signed with a swastika, which is also tattooed on his forehead. In Manson's writings to his son, he rambled and admitted that he could very well be his father. Manson also provided a contact number, but to date, Roberts and Manson have not spoken.

Roberts struggles with the truth, telling The Sun, "He's my biological father. I can't help but have some kind of emotional connection. That's the hardest thing of all -- feeling love for a monster who raped my mother. I don't want to love him, but I don't want to hate him either."
