Today while hanging out with Rev. Al Sharpton in the studio for a show, I found my mind reflecting deeply on the recent drama between Tiger Woods and his wife, Elin Nordegren. In spite of the fact that I was sitting next to the man who epitomizes race relations in America, no one brought up the fact that Tiger Woods is involved in an interracial marriage. It wasn't because we were afraid to go there, it was just that there were more pressing issues to discuss.
One caller, though, called in to the show and slammed the issue on the table like a five-pound slab of raw chicken, using the old O.J. Simpson argument, "Had he been with a sister, none of this would have happened."
While I don't agree with the caller's assertion (we know that marital drama knows no racial boundaries), I found it interesting that some of the black women in the studio smirked and looked at the floor, as if to say, "I hear ya, girl." These smirks were not built on agreeing with what the woman said, but rather, on the disappointment and resentment that many black women have felt about the fact that Tiger Woods almost never seemed to show any interest in African-American females. Unlike guys like myself, who admire Tiger for his achievements, I know a long list of black women who could care less if Tiger were to take his golf clubs and jump off the side of a 10-story building.
The woman's comment about race, led me down a trail of thought about Tiger Woods, race and how this incident is going to change the way we see him forever. One clear point that can be made relates to the O.J. Simpson case. Before he was acquitted for the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson in 1995, Simpson was America's favorite black man: He didn't have anything to do with the black community, and white America loved him as much as they loved themselves. He simply turned in his "brother card"-never to be seen in a soul food restaurant again. Fate changed all that, though, as O.J. ended up relying on support from the black community to get him through his toughest hour. White America abandoned him for committing a mortal sin: Hurting a beautiful woman with blond hair and blue eyes. Had Nicole Brown Simpson been black, it is arguable that O.J. would never have been dealt with so harshly for the next 15 years.
Tiger may be in a similar situation with his wife Elin. I seriously wonder if Elin struck Tiger with that golf club, given that Tiger was going in and out of consciousness and drove straight in to a tree. It's odd to me that one of the most focused human beings on the planet was unable to dodge large objects in the path of his automobile. But regardless of the strange facts coming out, given that Tiger is the one being accused of committing adultery, one can only wonder if our society will decide that Tiger is the bad guy in this incident. Should this incident turn out to be a case of domestic violence, it should be made clear that if Tiger didn't hit his wife, he is not the one who should be charged and vilified. There is no excuse for committing violence in a relationship, period.
We have to remember that the world changes quickly, right before our eyes: No one ever thought that O.J. Simpson would be public enemy No. 1, and it was once a pipe dream for Barack Obama to become President of the United States. So, the idea that Tiger Woods could become ostracized by the American public for the dirt now being released about his private life is not out of the question. I am not sure in which direction this saga is going to go, but I can guarantee you this: It's going to get deeper before it's done, since the world has been waiting to see the real Tiger Woods.

i am a 31 yr old female of mixed descent and i live in the caribbean. i am currently completing my degree in special needs education. i think i was in my early twenties when tiger made his now famous statement about what race he is. i remember instantly coming off the high that a black man had finally won a major golf tournament. where i'm from the whitest people we come into are what are called french creole and the syrians.
in a way i can understand how african american women feel we have it exisiting here in the form of successful black men stating that they will not date or marry a dark woman or straight out black woman because they are lazy, gold diggers and they don't want late for school hair. most of my female friends are very acomplished women with masters degrees, companies of their own and can't catch a break from any man because of this fright of blackness destroying their gene pool.
i have sat and listened to now ex male friends of mine say it. one a lawyer by the way even told me you know i've always cared about you but i have far to go and i'm marrying lighter. i'm very dark with butt length curly hair. i refuse to relax it and it is always crazy. funny thing is people always tell me i should do something with my hair like a perm because i have a good last name and my own hair.
now my whole thing is this there are some black men who over do it and there are some cases where it is genuinely love. to those who hate themselves i'm sorry for you because you are denying yourself one of god's most glorious gifts to us and that is love.
as for tiger, i hope he recieves the counselling he so obviously needs and that his wife is strong because she has two children looking at her right now.

Very well said sister. Some of us young brothers and sisters can only imagine what some blacks in the US have gone through for so many year. If it is still so bad today, I am in awe of those who lived in the US decades ago when it was BAD BAD. Just think, they are still some people who did not vote for, and would hurt the President in a heart beat just because he is black. America will one day pay a terrible price for white supremacy. Is it any wonder that old KKK members who have committed henious acts against innocent blacks get up at night in their nursing homes screaming to the top of their voices? Is it the spirit of those innocent black men who they lynched and who continue to haunt these devilish people??? GOD IS NOT DEAD.

Tiger just likes women that he can take a swim with and then immediately go out to the CLUB. Most black women can't do that because their hair embraces them. If they would only stop trying to make their hair look like WHITE, ASIAN, Hispanic, European and Indian women of the world and accept their God given ‘NAPPY’ uniqueness. Beyonce’s sister was on the Oprah show after she removed all of that fake weave and chemically processed hair and stated that she felt as though she had been freed from a Psychological Prison. Why do so many so-called SISTAS’ not see that???
And besides the above, Tiger is not BLACK! He is 50% ASIAN. You can go on the internet and look at pictures of people from Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam and see thousands of individuals that look like Tiger. Why insult him and deny his mother which constitutes half of the blood running through his veins. The Slave Masters said that if you have any Black in you at all then you are BLACK. Are you buying into the Slave masters determinations? Don't feel bad because most Black's or Mixed Blacks buy into it! The SLAVE mentality with BLACKS just like racism with WHITES is Alive and Well. Peace!

Tiger may not be black but he sure isn't white. Of course that marriage is interracial.
I agree with the Black Muslims, blacks should stay with blacks.

As Tiger Woods' wife leaves, perhaps Tiger should leave to see a shrink. The guy had it all – family, wealth, admiration, reputation - but it wasn't enough. Now he is losing for perhaps the first time in his life. Many online sports sites listed at Dozensports.com say Tiger will bounce back from this, but I'm not so sure. Rarely has such a big star fallen so low in such a quick time. Can Tiger ever return with pride?
