Kasim Reed was certified as the winner of Atlanta's hard-fought mayoral runoff on Saturday. Reed beat his opponent, Mary Norwood, by only 715 votes out of the 84,383 ballots cast. That's a difference of 0.84 percent, a political photo finish.
Voter turnout was higher than expected, and Norwood is not ready to concede yet. According to reports, she and her team will be fully involved in the recount.
Mary Norwood isn't expecting a miracle, but she's going to try for one anyway. "I have no information that something dramatic will happen," she says. "But, when you get this close, there have been some races that have been overturned." Source: 'Norwood to Ask for Recount,' WSB News
Because there is less than a percentage point between Norwood and Reed, a recount is automatic. So on this last leg, Norwood's campaign has sent out a fundrasing letter to gather enough funds to make it through the recount process effectively. Here's an excerpt:
While we fight through the recount, we need to keep the campaign operational and meet the expenses that come with a recount. This will be a costly process. We are still operational with very few paid staff and dozens of volunteers who are ready to fight for what's right and fight until the last legitimate vote is counted.
If we can raise another $30,000, we will be able to deploy a 100 percent, full-force effort to make sure every vote of every Atlanta citizen is heard during these last days of the campaign. Source: 'Mary Norwood drums up cash for a recount,' Political Insider with Jim Galloway, AJC.com
At all times, money is the mother's milk of politics, but even money won't change the outcome between Reed and Norwood, according to election officials.
