Some are wondering how much money Tiger Woods stands to lose should he take a year off from golf. The New York Post came up with an estimate, which is probably a bit of an exaggeration. I think that these numbers are inflated for dramatic effect, but it is not inconceivable to argue that Woods will lose $200 million in lifetime earnings from the scandal, even if he chooses to play golf like normal next year. The value of a financial asset (Woods' name) is not just impacted by reductions in current earnings. It is also morphed by the multiplicative effect of lifetime losses resulting from current events. In other words, Woods doesn't just lose money this year; he is going to lose money for years to come. This is especially true if he ends up being "OJ Simpsonized" by this event.
What is also significant is the half-billion dollar loss for the entire golfing industry that will result from a year without Woods on the course. There were quite a few people making money from his name, so the long list of Woods' mistresses will create an even longer list of golfing execs crying in their collective beer.
Here are the estimated losses to Woods and the industry if the golfer takes next year off.
According to the New York Post:
$180 MILLION IN PERSONAL EARNINGS, INCLUDING $110 million in advertising income, if sponsors rebel and dump contracts
$23 million in tournament prize money (roughly the amount he won in his last full season on the PGA Tour and abroad)
$30 million in fees for three golf courses he's designing, if deals fall through
$17 million in appearance fees (equal to his best year for showing up to play minor events)
$591 MILLION IN INDUSTRY LOSSES, INCLUDING:
$455 million in losses to his Nike-endorsed golf brand, based on estimated 35 percent sales decline
$40 million in lost PGA Tour ticket sales, based on a predicted 25 percent loss at 20 Woods-attended tourneys
$96 million if the Woods-brand EA Sports golf video game goes down the tubes
The golfing industry's greatest mistake is that although it certainly did a good job of investing in Woods, it didn't do a good job investing in his replacements. Sure, Woods i s the greatest golfer in the history of the world, but the lack of effort put in to promoting golf to people of color means that he is still the only black guy on the golf course. My uncles, cousins and friends all gather around the TV to cheer for Woods because he represents a source of pride for our community. We've never had another black man to cheer for on the course, largely due to golf's stubborn commitment to remaining the sole domain of the white and wealthy. Even today, the PGA is still a game for white men, and they are going to lose money because of it.

Sex scandels are one of the greatest historical pitfalls for the famous (and non-famous). You cheat, you deplete.

This whole thing is so awful...yes, he brought it on himself....but all the tabloids, media , etc. are going to kill him. Don't be suprised if you find him dead one day....maybe this will be a wake up call to all the "stars" of the world. the media wants news, and stories. Bad news is great for them and believe me, they are going to make this the worst.

THIS TRAVESTY OF ON-GOINGS OF THE TIGER IS NO DOUBT MAKING SOMEBODY MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ALSO...GIVEN THE THOUGHT JUST HOW BIG THE SNOWBALL EFFECT HAS THIS THING GROWING....MY CONCLUSION TO IT ALL....FIRST OF ALL NO ONE SHOULD ACTUALLY HAVE ANY REASON TO NOT BE MONOGAMOUS TO ANY TRUE RELATIONSHIP ; WHICH QUESTIONS THE CHEATER (DID I REALLY HOOK UP WITH THE RIGHT PERSON FROM THE START )THEN ADDING WOMEN ARE BECOMING JUST AS EQUAL ON THE PLAYING FIELD AS MEN HAVE BEEN FOR EONS ONLY NOW BOTH WITHOUT MUCH SHAME IN THE GAME ; SO I CONCLUDE IF THEY WOULD BE BOTH EQUALLY AS SMART ( ESPECIALLY WHEN THE MONETARY VALUE IS SO GREAT ) TO STAND BY AND DEFEND EACH OTHER THROUGH THE THICKEST OF IT ALL THEN THERE WOULD BE VERY LITTLE ROOM FOR COMMERCIALIZING OF THIS TYPE OF MEDIA I.E. MR. AND MRS. MARTIN LUTHER KING , THE REV. AND MRS. JESSE JACKSON SR. AND SO ON : YOU GET MY DRIFT . I STRONGLY SUGGEST TO DO AS THE ITALIANS ON T.V. AND REAL LIFE ; ACCEPT THAT THERE IS NO GETTING OUT OF THE RELATIONSHIP EXCEPT BY DEATH AND GUESS WHAT ? SOMEONE (S) WILL DEFINITELY COME OUT THE RICHER FOR IT ... NUF SAID

Tiger will "lose" a lot of money in the short term but with the right PR spin, I think he will make even more in the long term. You do raise an excellent point about the brands he endorsed not having a replacement. THEY are going to lose a lot of money. Tiger has been the face of golf for years and the Golf brand will be hurting for a while.

Again, this Watkins guy is so off the mark it is ridiculous. He knows nothing about golf and should find out a little before he writes about it. First off, Tiger will never quit golf for the entire season, he will play a limited schedule for sure, but no way would he miss one major unless he were injured. He will play the min 15 tournaments the tour requires, all big tournaments and spend the majority of the year fixing his marriage. I will bet a million dollars he does not miss the Masters! This is what he should have been doing anyway. He has two goals, most tour wins and most majors, he only needs to leave the country once to do this. With his private jet and helicopter, no tournament in the US if far for him.

Whatever the outcome of all of this, he did it to himself. He needs to take some time off and put his feet back on Planet Earth. This is not some little boy; he's a grown man and he has got to know how these corporations work. When everything is fine they are cool; when it's not they will leave you high and dry. It's sad to see someone who worked this hard for this long lose so much because he can't control his penis. I hope this is the only wake-up call he gets. It would be very sad if the real wake-up call is AIDS.

What the hell are you talking about? You need to get your facts straight. Every woman this man got involved with was a WHITE woman - he never got with anyone that looked like him.

In my opinion, I feel that Tiger felt that all the money he has earned made him so powerful, invincible and that regardless of what he was doing, nothing could touch him or upset his life. Regardless of how much money a black person has or even if he is the richest person in the world does not exempt him from being exposed and beat down, even if it is true or not. Are there any black females coming out in this scandal? Or was being seen with a black female a disgrace or too tarnishing to Tiger's public image. I notice that none of the major networks are even talking about the fact that so far, none of the females coming foward are Black or Asian. They are talking about everything else concerning Tiger's endorsements and the money, but nothing about females of color being part of the scandal. I get the feeling that through all what is going on, the American white public is glad that all of the females are white and that is where a good portion of his money will be going. They want the hard earned money of a rich black person to be spent on white women and to stay in the white communities. Sad but true, white women feels that they deserve the money and that black females don't. If Tiger goes to live in Sweden with his wife and her family, I feel that he must be very, very careful. If anything happens to him, she gets everything. She, her family and the country of Sweden will be very rich and powerful, because of his money. Tiger had better reach out to other American black celebrities who will take him in their comfort at this time, be there for him and protect him. The country of Sweden wants the money, but at the same time feels that one of it's own has been humilated by one of the richest and powerfulest black person in the world. I notice that on The Jackson Family Dynasty, Jermaine Jackson's wife looks white. I could be mistaking her nationality. Her body language and personality seems to show that she is definitely one that will push Jermaine to get more and more money, even though she will even humbly tie his shoes. I am glad that his brothers puts their feet down when they are not in agreement to a project he wants to start.
Sincerely,
From The Desk Of
The Carolina Bee
