A Massachusetts child was sent home from school two weeks ago for drawing a stick figure of Jesus on the cross, and because he drew the picture, the 8-year-old African American child was ordered to undergo psychological testing before being allowed to return to school. This week, the Taunton School District is denying the father's claims that the boy was in fact suspended over the drawing.
Chester Johnson, 40, the boy's father, said that his son was inspired to draw the crucifix after visiting a shrine in Attleboro, Mass. Johnson also said that his son was in absolute awe over the religious symbols that were on display at the shrine. "When he saw the crucifixion of Jesus on the cross, that's what he drew," Johnson said. "He liked that. That drew his eye."
According to Johnson, the child's teacher asked students to draw a picture that reminded them of the holiday season. When his son drew Xs instead of actual eyes on the Jesus figure, Johnson speculates, this might have alarmed school administrators.
School district administrators claim that the drawing Johnson showed reporters is not the same one that was discovered by the teacher earlier this month. School officials now say that the second-graders were never assigned to sketch something that reminded them of the holiday season.
This is the statement published on the school district's Website:
Johnson is demanding that the school district compensate him and his family for their pain and suffering. He told a flurry of reporters yesterday, "It hurts me that they did this to my kid. They can't mess with our religion; they owe us a small lump sum for this.''

Everybody here is seeing dollar signs, but I see a kid missing our on an education just because he wanted to express his religious beliefs for what ever reason.

I think it's sad that the father thinks a 'small lump sum' is the way to make this situation better. It just speaks to the desperate financial situations some of us are living in. We really think more money will make us happier.

Yes, the family should be financially compensated and should use the money to pay for a private christian education for the boy. Any child who is persecuted in this way by public school staff and officials should have the option to attend private school at their expense.

When I first read the headline, I was ready to get indignant, being a disciple of Jesus Christ, but after reading the story, it is a he said she said situation. By the way, someone tell me when has this country ever really followed Jesus Christ.....Slavery.....Jim Crow......murder of Native Americans??????We do remember these things right.

I'm sorry, this is one of those cases where there are definately two sides and then there's the truth.
According to the article, the picture that is shown is not the actual picture that the school has concerns about. Also, the school states the child was NEVER given an assignment of drawing something that reminded him of the holiday season. It don't take a psychic to know the school still has the original picture or at least a photocopy. No one is going to make me believe that a child was given the assignment that the father states, then the school turned around and recommended that the child be evaluated by a psychologist. It doesn't make sense!!!
Please be careful about jumping on other people's causes. I didn't read one thing about the father taking the child out of the school or anything outside of getting a big payday. If he was able to get compensation which I seriously doubt, where do you think the money is coming from????
Daddy dearest knew how to get attention and support by throwing religion in the mix. Don't be gullible.

The school system should know the risks involved. Pay them so they can send their child to private school.
