This YouTube video would be funny if what it revealed wasn't so pathetic. Shot with a generous amount of good humor by two coworkers -- a black man named Desi and a white woman named Wanda -- it demonstrates that the new face-tracking technology for HP TouchSmart Webcams won't track dark faces.
DESI: Hewlett Packard computers are racist. I said it! And the worst part is, I bought one for Christmas. I hope my wife doesn't see this YouTube video, but I bought the same computer, and we can't even use it. (Moves back in forth, attempting in vain to get the Webcam to track him.) Look, it's not following me. But Wanda, get back in the frame.
WANDA: (Giggles as she moves back and forth and the Webcam follows her face.) It follows me wherever I go.
According to Black Web 2.0, a faulty software algorithm is to blame for giving melanin-rich folk the cold shoulder. More details are available on HP's Voodoo Blog:
The technology we use is built on standard algorithms that measure the difference in intensity of contrast between the eyes and the upper cheek and nose. We believe that the camera might have difficulty "seeing" contrast in conditions where there is insufficient foreground lighting. [SOURCE: HP's Voodoo Blog]
HP is working with its "partners" to look into the matter. In the meantime, the company suggests that people who are slighted by the color-struck Webcam check out tips for optimizing their Webcam experience.
All of this begs the question: Why would HP send a product to market based on the assumption that the customer's face is going to be light in complexion? Most likely it wasn't an intentional slight, but in some ways a thoughtless oversight is an even bigger slap in the face to the darker-skin people who buy these computers.
As the video demonstrates, we are literally invisible to HP.
What do you think?

Apparently you are one of those that THINK that there are more black people in jail because of racism. While I will concede that there are probably occasional situations where there is injustice due to racism, I hardly believe that is anywhere close to the "norm". The people that do the crime do the time, regardless of color.
People like you are the ones that probably agree with affirmative action and BS like that. Affirmative Action needs to be plainly outlawed! I am not saying that black people should not be hired, but what I am saying is that employers should not have to hire ANYONE because of the color of their skin, that's completely absurd. If 32 white people apply for a job and 2 black people, what do you think the odds are of a black person being hired is? But if they aren't then the Affirmative Action alarm goes off and the NAACP gets all puffy chested. It's craziness! Employers should hire whomever is best qualified and suited to their needs, period. If they are black, great, if they are white, great, if they are Asian, great!

Bill, Bill, Bill, what's with all the hate? If you had to live in a society where everything you did and or said was based on the color of your skin and not your character you to would feel like a victim at times. All I want to know is why is it when a black person does something wrong we are all lumped together? Look at Madoff and Sanford, am I to believe that all white people who say they have a reputable business are actually deceiving their customers, because that's exactly what both Madoff and Sanford did to the customers that trusted them.

It's time to put a stop to all the racial injustice once and forall. We as a community need to show our displeasure by not buying their products. Dr. M.L. King organized the BUS BOYCOT we can have a product boycot - our money talks very LOUD. And it,s not just HP but all products that are offensive to the Black community.
