In a recent interview with April Ryan, from American Urban Radio Networks, President Barack Obama responded to his critics in the black community, who seem to have grown substantially in number. According to a poll taken here on AOL Black Voices, 55 percent of African Americans think that President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder do a whole lot of talking and not much acting when it comes to issues that matter to African Americans.
During his interview with Ryan, the president had this to say:
"The only thing I cannot do is, by law, I cannot pass laws that say 'I'm just helping black folks.' I'm the president of the entire United States," Obama said. "What I can do is make sure that I am passing laws that help all people, particularly those who are most vulnerable and most in need," he said. "That in turn is going to help lift up the African-American community."
The president then went on to cite his job creation and health care initiatives as reasons that African Americans should feel that he is working on their behalf.
I am not sure who is advising the president on dealing with the African-American community, but perhaps I can help just a little bit:
1) Please stop giving us the same answers: That "rising tide will raise all ships" argument is played out, Mr. President. Intelligent black folks with a critical eye on politics know when they've heard the same thing multiple times. You can't come off like a broken record. Even the responses given to Ryan during the interview have been repeated in the past. You can't release the same record every time and expect black America to keep dancing to it. Saying something new can be a good thing. For example, rather than speaking out on the silly situation with Henry Louis Gates, you could have spoken out on behalf of Eutisha Rennix, the black woman left to die by paramedics who wanted to hurry up and eat their bagels.
2) If you can't make policies for any particular group, why does it seem that you are doing it for everyone else? I've seen special committees/task forces for the automobile industry, the protection of Israel, the gay/lesbian/bi-sexual community, the environment, bankers, immigrants, etc. Perhaps mentioning a task force to deal with the black unemployment gap or mass incarceration of African Americans might at least appease some of your black critics. But then again, maybe there is something in place that I don't know about - which means you need to spend more time getting your message out to the community. The point is that there appears to be a double standard in place, and we've all noticed that you almost never invite any African-American leaders to the White House. I hope you haven't become the successful relative who is ashamed of his family members.
3) Please stop giving us speeches on personal responsibility. I am still reeling over Obama's speech on Father's Day of 2008, where he seemed to enjoy separating black men as being especially irresponsible and the cause of their own demise. Eric Holder did the same thing last week. Any intelligent man who can see the mass incarceration and unemployment rates of black men, and then chalk it all up to "black men are just screwing up" is doing nothing more than continuing the same international and historical habit of scapegoating minority groups. We expect that from Bush, but not from you Mr. President. If you would not give a particular speech to white folks, then please don't give it to black people. Some of us have drank the kool-aid, but there are quite a few African Americans who are going to weigh your efforts against other politicians we could have supported. You are certainly better than John McCain, but people are wondering if you are better than Hillary would have been. I won't pass judgment on such matters until 2011.
The point, Mr. President, is that we consider you to be special. We don't treat you like everyone else and give reverence to you that has yet to be earned. The same respect we give to you, we'd like to see returned. Not in a way that offers preferential treatment, but in a way that simply acknowledges that we exist. Black suffering should not be invisible.

Dr. Boyce I really have to wonder about you sometimes. President Obama IS the president of all Americans, not just black America, he can not single out 1 race of people to help - don't be so biased and rediculous. You really need to open your mind and stop with the "us poor black people" attitude.

Dr. Boyce really needs to check himself. I am so tired of folks expecting so much when they bring nothing to the table. If you are bringing your "A" game and continue to experience closed doors , that is the time to protest. I'll leave Dr. Boyce and all the other people who feel President Obama is ignoring African Americans: "If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation…want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters…. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will." ~ Fredrick Douglass~

I complete agree with your comments! I'm so tired of these balck folks coming here online attacking the President, but are in fact doing absolutely nothing except running their mouths as per usual! I have to also agree that black people, both BM and BW need to be more responsible! And, stop always wanting more hand outs! When are we going to finally wake up as a people? Appears like never!

I totally agree with what you had to say. Black folks have to stop making excuses about their own success in life and start taking some initiative for them selves. Obama is the first black President and this true, but he can not fix all of the black communities problems. There is so much grant money in communities now for who ever wants to go back to school. Go Help Yourself!!

I am an African American with a BA and a Masters Degree and believe me when I say that grants have not paid for them. Unfortunately, like so many Americans I am currently unemployed. I have been on a few interviews but I must admit that every time I enter an interview with white board members I feel a since of doubt. As a receptionist at my former place of employment I saw firsthand how African American applicants came in for interviews but was constantly denied positions. Once this particular company had approximately sixty+ (60+) positions that were available. However, only one (1) African American male and approximately three (3) African American females were hired. Most of the white applicants were hired not based on what they knew but who they knew. I am just so tired of this misconception that African Americans want a free ride, not bringing nothing to the table, not bringing their “A” game, wanting welfare, or that we expect President Obama to pass laws just for African Americans. Most of us don’t have the networks, contacts, friends, or family in order to get a job. I like so many other African Americans are not looking for handouts or the crumbs left over from Wallstreet and Big Business. Give us some Equality and Justice.....And as for President Obama just his promise to make a change.

To all of my fellow black people...we have to get pass this attitude that we are victims. We are intelligent, gifted, talented individuals who are capable of doing several of the things that we are asking of our president. He is being ridiculed enough by some Republicians so it saddens me that we have to chime in. Ask yourself this question..."What have I done to build/re-build the black community? What can I do to shape the minds of our youth and prepare them for success?" After you have done this and actually stopped talking and started putting your words into action, then maybe you can ask for assistance where you feel none is being given.

Dr. Boyce is absolutely correct in his comments. President Obama is giving you all a bunch of BS and you're all believing it. I dare anyone to come up with one meaningful policy he has created that matches all that he has done for Jews, gays, and immigrants. Black people have to grow up.
Also, for your information, Dr. Watkins does teach at an HBCU. He is affiliated with Texas Southern U and Bennett College. He interviewed at my school, but many black universities are afraid of progressive black scholars like Dr. Watkins. But he has interviewed at several HBCUs that refuse to hire him because he is controversial. So, before you attack him, you need to check your facts.
The final point is that he is not attacking president obama. Anyone who thinks that a politician can do no wrong is selling out the black community by not demanding that the politician do what is right for black america. If you don't ask for things from politicians, you'll get nothing. So, stop hating on the professor who is preaching truth and start checking the politicians who are lying to you!

Sorry, I'm American then I'm black and he sure as hell is not my President, not even close! He's what has to be referred to as "Just Another Uppity Negro" who when given power has little or no idea of how to constructively use it. Because you either use or lose the power they do things that don't make any real sense. If he is really the President of all the people I suggest he wake up very soon. As badly as we all hated Geo W. Obama, even with his own people is dangerously close to creating an all out alsault to save the American way of life.

Yes I agree Lisa. I am a White woman, American, who voted for President Obama with joy. He has fulfilled my expectations given his only one year in office. Now the blacks are disillusioned because they seem to be saying among themselves, hey, he's OUR president, he should be favoring OUR race. Well, here's a news flash to you black cry babies. He is a NON PARTISAN very smart man who just happens to have black skin. TOO BAD. He is doing a great job with lots of opposition, and guess what. WITHOUT WHITE VOTES< you would not have Obama in there to whine about and grouse at. So leave off and complain about some of the Democrats who are not supporting their own initiatives and their own party platform!!!
