Balloon Boy's Parents Sentenced

Who will ever forget the weather balloon hoax that had us riveted to our TV screens, praying for the safety of 6-year-old Falcon Heene, who was supposedly trapped in the flying object back in October of this year. Media hound tag team Richard and Mayumi Heene, who concocted the publicity stunt in order to land a reality TV show, will now be punished.

On Wednesday, a Larimer County, Colorado, judge sentenced Richard and Mayumi Heene to 110 days in jail and eight years probation. The judge also imposed a stipulation on the profiteering parent's probation, which forbids them from receiving any further fame or fortune from the weather balloon hoax during their probationary period.

Beginning January 11, 2010, Richard was ordered by the Judge to spend 30 days in jail. The sentence includes 60 days of work release that will let him pursue work as a construction contractor during the day and spend his nights in jail while serving his time.

Heene stood misty-eyed in the courtroom during his sentencing and apologized profusely to the rescue workers who chased the empty weather balloon: "I do want to reiterate that I'm very, very sorry."

The legal slap on the wrists do not merely stop with the judge's sentencing, Richard must also write letters of apology to community and service agencies, submit to random checks for alcohol and drugs and perform 100 hours of community service.

On the flip side, Mayumi, who also participated in the blueprint for fast dollars, will receive 20 days jail time, to be served after Richard completes his sentence; four years supervised probation, 120 hours community service and a mandatory letter of apology. The Mom of three will also not be allowed to collect any dollars whatsoever from the hoax for a period of four years.
