As the son of a police officer, incidents like this are quite disturbing to me. On one hand, there is the fact that many officers around the nation take the use of force to be a very serious responsibility. Such officers deserve our respect and full cooperation. On the other hand, there is the reality that black men are far more likely to be victims of deadly force by police. In nearly every corner of the American justice system, the incarceration and extermination of black males is not only customary, but expected to occur with almost no accountability. The blue wall in police departments is thick enough to turn a lie into the truth and to value an officer's career over a defendant's life. Such consistent abuse of power should be challenged by concerned citizens everywhere.
When it comes to the case of Mark Anthony Barmore, several thoughts come to mind:
1) Make sure we find out the facts. While it is easy to presume that a man shot in the back was clearly victimized by police, it is important that each case be dealt with individually. Anyone who viewed my CNN commentary on the Henry Louis Gates case knows that I am not one to jump to conclusions in cases of police abuse. But for this situation, my own investigation in to the facts shows that there is almost no explanation for the officers' actions. In the case of Mark Anthony Barmore, I am having a hard time seeing anything that justifies what happened to this 23-year-old man. What is also interesting to me is that many of the witnesses do not seem to corroborate the story given by the officers involved.
2) He was unarmed, so please explain that one too. The police department and the city of Rockford owes the community a thorough explanation. How in the world can an unarmed man be shot in the back with just cause? Was he threatening harm to an officer or someone else in the church? Is there any other kind of force that could have been used? Given that one of the officers involved in the case, 37-year-old Oda Poole, has had three shootings in the last three years, this is serious cause for alarm. It is not normal for any officer to use his gun that many times in such a short time span.
3) Shot in a church in front of children? According to initial reports on the case, Mark Anthony Barmore had come to church to receive counseling after being sought out on a domestic disturbance that took place with his live-in girlfriend. He was speaking in the driveway with Pastor Melvin Brown and Brown's 17-year-old daughter, when officers arrived on the scene. The police officers then approached Barmore with their guns drawn and the man fled in to the church with the pastor's wife, daughter and several young children watching. Witnesses claim that Barmore emerged from the boiler room with his hands up, but was shot several times in the chest and back. According to officers, Barmore fought with them and tried to grab their guns.
"My daughter was about 5- eet away. When he hit the ground, she sees the cops shooting him in the back. We saw slugs in his back when we went to see the body," said Brown, the pastor.
4) This case is not just racial, but about civil liberties. The idea that we live in a nation where police authority cannot be questioned should be a great concern for us all. American citizens should not fear the police, and in black communities across our nation, a police state has been in place for more than 100 years. Where the people in the suburbs are happy to see officers, many African Americans are trained to be fearful. A national conversation must occur about the limits of police power and whether or not officers caught abusing their authority are going to be dealt with in an appropriate fashion. At the same time, there must continue to be room for good, law-abiding police officers to do their jobs effectively.
I am going to call Rev. Jesse Jackson this week to discuss the situation in more detail. I'll keep you posted, but I do plan to make a trip to Rockford soon to help the community deal with this tragedy. Unless there are significant factors of which I am unaware, there needs to be some accountability for the officers involved as well as the entire Rockford Police Department.

I wish that we would soon face the fact that the way that police operate statewide is not going to change. As a matter of fact as society becomes more corrupt, lovers of themselves, disobiedent to parents, quarrlsome, unruly, unlawful, and having no regard for authority then I can assure you that some things may change but the strongest and most advantageous of the tactics will always be employed. It's called Your life or mines. NO in the case where there is absolutely no threat of tit for tat then the issue becomes a power struggle. For some reason black men above all other races have a divine problem with authority. It is something about uniform justice that irks them to the hilt. If the police approached this young man in the parking lot I am very much sure that the next move would have been for him to surrender and cooperate with the police but no this idiot oh excuse my term, but this brother decided to seek protection from within the church which automatically placed the church and all of her members inside in danger. Now you want to run your reporting self all the way to Rockford and taking Jesse Jackson with you. Don't you have anything else better to do. No I am for real. If this guy was in for counseling I am sure that the Pastor had a office and his 17 year old daughter was not the couselor. Then you state that the findings reported that the young man struggled with the police for the officers gun and was shot in the chest and the back. Which came first the chicken or the egg. Look hear ppl need to address issues of more significance. The brother was violent point blank. He was a threat point blank, he had beat his woman, and made him violent. I am sure the police did not simply drive down the street see this guy and say "hey there's a black young dude lets go kill him". You reporters need to report on something worth praising instead of the same oh police drama idiocracy.

You are one sick individual. You sound as if you were there, and you know the situation. No one, of any race, should be treated in this manner. You need to search for compassion instead of making fallacious generalization of Black brothers because apparently you have no clue. Situations like this are what makes some brother response to police officers the way this young man did, brake out and run when the modern day lynch mob arrives. It is sad to say, this is no isolated incidence, here in this land of equals justice for all, unless you are a brother.

Hey, Sis.
How dare you sew all of us brothers with the same cloth.
I had lost a distant cousin to the police when I was little, and for years, I hated them all. But then I noticed something wrong in that thinking when I got older - not all policemen are bad and to some extent, I will still have to watch out for the bad ones. And many people, violent or not, will go to a church to seek some kind of counseling to get their head straight. Many had gone to Christ, some actually turned themselves in to the law.
What at issue here are the use of violent force and the man's civil liberties. I'm not going to downplay domestic violence because I, too, am a survivor of it, but to categorize someone as violent (along with the rest of us brothers you so quickly came to judge-and you weren't even near the incident) makes me wonder if you need counseling. If you want to do something, stand up and fight for what's right. And by the way, NOBODY DESERVES THIS FATE.

Sandra Kendell or Uncle Tom either works, I will refrain from usuing the term sister. You are an idiot. Your statement contradicts itself, and your grammar is deplorable a fine example of low quality black inner city education. As the article states force was improperly used. He was shot with his hands held in the air, while surrendering, that is the point.I wondered how much your views would differ if this young man was your son or husband? "uniform justice" WTF!! what is that. UCMJ is the uniform code of millitary justice. There is no uniform justice to be exercised by a policeman. Justice should be uniformed and exercised by or judiciary system!! Your writing indicates that you clearly are stupid, so I won't waste anymore time with you.

Sis Sandy,
That was very well written indeed. Dr. Boyce is certainly welcome to go to any city in the great land of ours. But we don't want trouble makers like you, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson stirring up things that are settled. Mark Anthony Barmore lived up to his families legacy of crime. He didnt hold a job, had illegitable kids just like those before him. The entire extended family of his has been a burden on the taxpayers for many many years. I am sorry that he had to die young by a bullet and it is also regrettable that he got his guts splattered on the floor of a church. But he caused his own death by disobeying our officers. Officer Poole and North are two of the finest officers in the RPD. Barmore had already had a record of resisting arrest twice before as well as assualting a police officer. His bio mom has been in and out of incarceration. These people are bad news. At the photo ops, please. Do you think the law abiding residents of Rockford are going to be impressed seeing middle aged black men who look like wanna be rappers. Sunglasses in December? Photo ops in a muslim bookstore. Please, outsiders. Just stay the hell away and and mind your own business. Rockford and Winnebago can take care of their own. If Barmores family cant get with the program and become productive memebers of our society, I hope you show up with an empty moving van to take them out of our community.

So since its right for the police to shoot a man as many times as they feel like shooting him as long as he's "dress(ed) like a rapper" is it also okay to shoot anyone with a swastika tattoo and a bald head in the same manner while anyone WHO OPPOSES is to mind their own business? Your sounding more like a member of a crime family than anything else I've ever read about. It's because of 'Windy City' government officials with mentalities like this that make me glad to be leaving the house at such a big loss and take my taxes the hell outta here! Two more weeks and I'll be a little bit farther from so many people like you.

Well if you are speaking for all of the residents of Rockford I will make good and darned sure not to ever come past that city because if I am understanding your post you have called me crazy, you have likened me with "trouble" makers like Al Sharpton, and Jesse. You have blessed me by praying for me but either you are a complete idiot, or you are ribbing me. Please do no tell me that your comprehension level as it relates to my 1st post has brought you to your final conclusion. Your remarks makes me know just exactly why your little city is underfire. I hope there are some ppl living there able to read something and to respond to it sensibly. Gosh! You just totally turned my post up side down and inside out. Wow!
