The prison industrial complex affects all of us. Most of us in the African American community have a relative or friend who has been hit hard by this system. Many of us have even been affected ourselves. What's most interesting about the prison system is that people have convinced us that racial disparities in sentencing, arrests and incarcerations are primarily the result of African Americans choosing to embrace their own demise. This could not be farther from the truth.
Rev. Al Sharpton, who is also the host of 'Keeping it Real With Rev. Al Sharpton,' a nationally syndicated radio show, has helped take the lead in liberating the black community from the shackles of mass incarceration. His approach of mentioning the health care debate and recent recession as possible driving factors behind our nation taking the necessary steps to improve our prisons and racial disparities is noteworthy.
In a recent article on the topic, Rev. Sharpton had this to say:
"Why is it that more than half of all black men in America don't finish high school? Why is the unemployment rate in powerful cities like New York at 50 percent for Black men? Why did Congress abolish Pell grants for prisoners in 1994 that virtually eliminated all 350-incarceration college programs across the country?
"Is it any coincidence then that six out of 10 Black men who drop out of high school have spent time in jail by their mid-30s? With unemployment rates on the rise (and many would argue well in to the double digits among people of color), arrests for nonviolent infractions and petty crimes are leaving families motherless, fatherless and hopeless."
Rev. Sharpton is asking all of the right questions with his commentary, questions that we should all be asking. The truth is that when you look deeper at the prison system in America, you see a two-tiered society, where black men are on the bottom rung when it comes to education, economic opportunities and incarceration. This is not only a set of outcomes that are designed for our demise, they are outcomes that must be laid at the feet of President Barack Obama and Attorney Gen. Eric Holder. Holder and Obama's choice to give speeches to black men, telling them to stop misbehaving is no different from telling rape victims how to dress more appropriately. Our time might be better spent asking political figures why they do things that don't make any sense, such as spending $49,000 per year per inmate (as the state of California does) when they could provide effective education for inner-city children at a much lower cost. We might also ask why inmates have their rights to vote, get jobs or attend college revoked after they are released when we know that marginalizing the ex-convict only increases the likelihood of recidivism. Finally, we might ask why inmates are crowded in to prisons and allowed to rape one another, leading to the spread of disease that ultimately harms the general public.
If you want to know if I believe that all of these outcomes are coincidental, the answer is that I do not. While the sabotage of the black community by the prison system may not be entirely deliberate, the truth is that the politicians who allegedly represent us have made it clear that they simply do not care. Perhaps it's time to make them care, and we can start with our attorney general and president.

The truth of the matter is that Black American Males want to be in prison, Beleive me I am a criminal justice professional and I see this point proven on a daily basic. How many times do you have to tell a person to stay in school, how many time to you have to say leave drugs alone, How many time do you have to say don't make babies. How many time do you have to say that rapp stars street credibility is just BS. or that T.I or Lil Wayne got a sweet deal one that the aveage brother won't get. How many times do you have to tell them that you don't go to a job interview saggin even if it's to McDonalds, Come on Dr. instead of helping your hurting, your blaming it on society, when in fact black males want to be in prison. Let me ask you a question have you ever been to a prison on visitation day, well if you have you will see that blacks have some of the finest ladies visiting them, I mean jaw dropping fine, so being an inmate ain't all that bad. Except when you finally grow up, and realize that you wasted you life. Now you want society to help you, well its too late. Yeah going to prison is easy, it's life that's hard

BG you belong in that very complex you are complaining about. Since you seem to perpetuate those destructive stereotypes that serve us no purpose at all you need to live amongst those that live those stereotypes. Not all Black Americans live like that, I myself educate and enlighten Black Americans whenever I can about what they do that displays any sort of self-denegration but people like you just point fingers, turn your nose up and say "I don't want to associated or confused with those people". What do you think White people say when they see you, "Oh he's different he's not really Black"? NOT!

People are so judgemental when it come to black men. but what we all forget is, the tragedy and horror our slave-masters put us through. Back in the 80,s those scary movies came out: friday the 13th and freddy. I mean this as serious as a heart attack, white people treated and still treat black people like that. we cant move on, we have no foundation. Black men are the victims of racism and hate. we come from africa. when ever whites make a movie about africa, they always have a white actor or actress playing the part. (example: cleopatra) and so on. that is because africa(the place blacks are from) is beautiful, therefore: whites wish they were african. They want to be as great as the black man is but they cant. Since they cant, they do the next thing better: destroy what is great. Blacks make up 900billion dollars a year in this economy as consumers. So why dont we own companies like coke and walmart? we worked for whites 400 plus years for free of charge. If we averaged 5dollars an hour for 400 years we would be able to run our own economy as a black nation. but they didnt pay us anything. we built america for free. The way they pay us is put our black men in prison. and destroy black families. I agree with the writer. thankyou

You have a Phd. ??? And you actually BELIEVE GOVERNMENT CAN DO ANYTHING ??!!
Any moron with their eyes open knows the GUBMINT couldn't effect a Sunday Picnic without creating an 'agency', cost overruns, and fail to even have the event.
I have a Doctorate that took seven years to achieve, (was yours a six month farce done on the internet ?) but don't wear it on my sleeve. It doesn't define me, and I am known merely as Dieter.

Blacks no longer pick the crops but have become the crop. From the time a Black boy is born to an unwed mother he is property of the state. The system pays for his every needs. He is groomed for jail or prison. He is allowed to grow up acting like a fool. He will not be able to read or write well enough to compete in the White world. Fatherless he will have no Man role model in his life.
If Obama does not provide a positive image to the Black Youth, and Adults The Gig is up.
The thug life in dress, words and actions has been ingrained into the Hip-Hop Culture.
Standing on the street corners selling poison to anyone who wishes to buy has replaced trying to get a decent job. The older drug dealer must be removed in order to make room for those coming up
The Latins were brought here in the 90's to replace the Black man in the work force.
Obama is powerless. The Power Brokers continue to use him to carry out their evil deeds.
The American Indian was nearly wiped out because he fought back. Blacks will eventually die off because of AIDS and low birth rates. Women look and dress like Men. Men are looking and dressing like women.
The more Black males who go to jail means the less Black men for Black women.
The sagging pants culture means more Black men will come out of prison on the Down low or Queer.
Like rats in a cage they will prey on each other.
