Personally, I never joined Alpha Phi Alpha, although I have several cousins who took the plunge. In fact, I turned down every other fraternity that asked me to "pledge," including Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma and Kappa Alpha Psi. None of it appealed to me, especially since I felt that the pledging process was going to keep me up late, drain my bank account and possibly put my life in jeopardy. I was never very good at letting people tell me what to do.
In one of the boldest moves by any greek letter organization to date, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporate has announced that it is putting a halt to new membership nation-wide. The organization's General President, Herman "Skip" Mason Jr., made the announcement after a member of the student chapter at Fort Valley State University was charged with aggravated battery against one of the new members of the organization.
In reference to his decision on behalf of Alpha Phi Alpha, President Mason had this to say, "Following my review of 2009, it became clear to me that one area that needs our immediate focus is the conduct of brothers involved in the intake process," Mason's letter stated. "Our process was designed with the assumption that our members would conduct themselves honorably and with care. Regretfully, in several instances, that has not occurred. This means that all membership intake activities shall be and are hereby suspended until further notice."
A college student, 21-year old Bryson Trumaine Amey was charged with aggravated battery in an incident that allegedly occurred on November 29. As a result, 19-year old Brian Tukes was seriously injured and hospitalized for a week.
Let's be honest: most of you who went to college saw friends who were hazed and might have even been hazed yourself. Personally, I saw the Alpha Phi Alpha chapter at The University of Louisville (in my hometown) get into serious trouble for some things that were happening during the pledging process. This angered me to no end, since my brother was affiliated with that chapter. I saw a good friend nearly die after trying to pledge Omega Psi Phi. During my 16-years as a college professor, I have seen students get so immersed in greek life that they simply forgot why they were in college in the first place. Years later, some of them are still alcoholics after taking their first drink with their fraternity brothers.
This-is-ridiculous. It's time that we DEMAND that our children to go to college to be successful. I reflect on these issues honestly in my first book, "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about College." Greek life presents many advantages, including some commitment to community service, as well as professional networking opportunities. But far too many greeks only see the letters, the parties, the liquor and the women. That's not what being a black man is all about, and I am happy to see that President Mason is sending that message nation-wide.
As I send my daughters to college next year, the last thing I want to hear as a parent is that they almost lost their lives in incidents that have almost nothing to do with academic achievement. I also don't want to see their grade point averages decline because they've left for college and forgotten to study. It's time for the culture of college education to grow beyond a life of all-night parties, drinking till you puke and majoring in sorority 101. Instead, college might possibly be a place to build your future.

this is something i have never, ever understood about us;
why must we turn Greek just to be black?
why are we patterning ourselves after a society that first butchered our grandfathers (i.e., Carthage, to name one group) in one of the first recorded eras of genocide, then stole and corrupted our secret learning and training societies to suit their own purposes?
and this is who we idolise?
and please, before you attempt to bury me in mounds of meaningless data (remember what Samuel Clemens once said about that?) these organisations by and large exist upon the contributions of many in the way of dues, but only really benefit a very small percentage of those who usually compete at the top of the social/organisational order like presidential candidates;
so what we have here is an organisation that mimes that of its white peers who themselves are merely using as window-dressing the few tenets of the Egyptian/African-based societies of 1000s of years ago, as a facade to cover the same old backroom old (and yes, white) boys network not even their own women are allowed to participate in, save as second class organisations called sororities that end up attached to the parent male organisation...
and now you want me to believe this is progress?
and for this you are willing to brand your own self like a slave in a scene out of "Roots" and endure ridiculous torture by sexually frustrated if not outright deviant "superiors" (for it has been my experience that those are the only types of people who are so sadistic) to join, pay dues and hope you are there when one of the idols at the top of the social or organisation totem pole drops a crumb your way?
yes, i know Dr. King was in one, but who among you really seriously think he spent a day at the bottom of the totem pole save for appearances sake--or that he would've stayed a member if someone had tried to make him stay down bottom?
no, he would've simply joined another fraternity willing to elevate him upon sight, because that is the way it works--politics were politics back then, too;
and let's face it, the lot of us put together wouldn't add up to even the shadow of Dr. King, would we?
so there you have it--we trade the politics of the oppresser class for the politics of our own self-appointed oppressers, who in the face of the genuine article are completely if not so comically impotent they must depend upon the support, at least tacitly, of the true oppressers--and again, you call this "progress", right?
sorry, but that hat don't fit my head, and none of my children's heads, either--and maybe you should ask how well it really fits yours...

Dreameagle's comment while well written is more a sermon than anything else. One might think you were denied membership into such an organization and are perhaps, bitter. This is unfortunate because in your simple comments, you neglect to mention the "good" these organizations contribute to ALL communities including the one where you reside. I am willing to bet that one or more of these organizations have helped you directly or someone very close to you.
That being said, there is no need to bury you with "meaningless information." Just a suggestion to balance your argument going forward. It makes for a more meaningful expression rather that the one you have written that says you talk a lot but say so little.

haedly a sermon, for i am not and never have been a Nazarene, though if i were today i'd probably be Coptic;
yes, i speak from direct experience and no, not because i was denied but because i went through the entire process and was accepted into one of these boys clubs;
it turned out the lead hazer, who took a running start at me from 20 yards back with a paddle whilst i was held around a tree by other "brothers", was a former jailbird and known sexual deviant who wanted me for more than membership, which was one of the reasons i promptly quit (that and the fact it took three of the footballer brothers to hold me off him when i ripped free of the tree);
i swore to kill him on sight and everyone knew i meant it and had good reason to, but still the brothers all knew in advance what this deviant ex-con was up to and didn't lift a finger to stop it--so much for fraternity...or perhaps they were deviant, too?
well, to each his own--but not mine!
so, i speak to you from no sermon, just raw fact from direct experience, both from within and in liaison with several fraternites, both black and white;
