A coalition of Civil Rights leaders, including The Rev. Al Sharpton, met with U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to prevent the under-counting of African-Americans in the 2010 census. Estimates are that 4.5 million African Americans were missed in the last census, costing our community millions of dollars in governmental support.
"The under-count of blacks in the last count and the overcount of whites by 1 percent is not just a Washington statistic," said The Rev. Al Sharpton. "It manifests itself in goods and services that cost us. We want what is ours."
Rev. Sharpton is correct. African Americans must ensure that we stand up and get counted in the next census. Many of us can be distrustful of government representatives knocking on our doors, but it is critical that we put ourselves on the front lines of those being counted. Without being properly recorded, our communities end up severely underrepresented in the House of Representatives and miss out on valuable services such as public works projects.
"We shared our concerns and our commitment to prevent an under-count," said Urban League President Marc Morial in an interview with BlackAmericaWeb.com. "Secretary Locke listened intently. He agreed with our concerns."
The leaders are out there having the meetings, but the greatest black leader in the history of the world is the one that you see in the mirror. Take the census seriously and make sure that your community has fair access to the American dream.

Dr. Watkins, the Rev. Al Sharpton and you are 100% correct. There's even black people out claiming they're gonna write in some crazy description of themselves cause the word negro clashes with their sensibilities. I hope these folks get a grip and realize how our system works and start helping themselves instead of always wanting to be a doormat for some other racial demographic. Black people - just check negro. Thank you.

....I'm going to turn any and all U.S. census bureau agent away from my door, because what counts are Constitutional protections for all, and not superficial U.S. census data, for redistricting, etc., etc., just to keep no good bureaucrat incumbents in office.
....and the U.S. census body count of U.S. born Black men and women is worthless without competent representation. Thus far the Congressional Black Caucus and/or other hypocrites affiliated with the Democratic Party have misrepresented the Black community for their own self efficacy!
By and large President Barack Obama, the Congressional Black Caucus (Caustic), and/or other elected Black leaders affiliated with the Democratic Party have no regard for their sworn oath of office to honor his or her duty to protect the Constitutional rights of all law abiding U.S. citizens, U.S. born Black men, women, and/or their siblings being inclusive.

A direct relationship Exists between high unemployment and inevitable penal incarceration, because without lawful gainful employment, and/or Competent Representation, the Law Abiding Don't Stand a Prayer of a Chance!

most blacks don't want to be counted , they won't let census workers into their homes , on their property or any where near their neighborhoods in most cases . they are deathly afraid they will be found out NOT to be a minority afterall , and lose all the government entitlements afforded to "minorities" , therefore they don't want to be counted . this is nothing more than a ploy to get MORE taxpayer money.

I wonder if the Asian National Newspapers Association, or the Hispanic National Newspapers Association, or the Australian National Newspapers Association, or the Canadian-American National Newspapers Association, or the Italian National Newspapers Association, or the French National Newspapers Association, or the British National Newspapers Association, or the South American National Newspapers Association will also be asking for $10 million dollars to important task of encouraging people of their ethnic or cultural group to make sure they are a part of the 2010 census?
You know, to encourage them to do what is in their best interest.
Does it ever end?
