Kanye West is at it again. The man with the brilliance that makes for good legend also seems to have the ego of a thousand lifetimes. West was recently quoted comparing himself with the great poet Maya Angelou. Here is what Kanye had to say:
"It's funny how so many rappers get worse as their careers stretch out, but true poets get better." West then mentions that he wants to follow in the footsteps of giants like Maya Angelou, Nina Simone and Gill Scott-Heron (whose name West misspells "Herron"). In all capital letters, West then wrote, "Their work improved with time. They documented what was happening in culture." He then goes on to state that "modern day poets and artists" have a responsibility to represent what's happening, so that "when the powers that be try to rewrite history you can always look at our works and find truth."
At the end of the post, West also critiqued the media, encouraging fans to "soak in positive forces and look down upon those who masquerade as truth tellers. ... Look past the headlines and deal with just a bit of reality."
Quick thoughts on Kanye:
1) I loved Kanye West when he said that George Bush doesn't care about black people, but I was annoyed by his attacks on Taylor Swift. Chill out, dude. You're just another great artist, not Jesus Christ.
2) Kanye's ego has served him quite well. Had Kanye quietly sat in the corners at Rocafella records, we never would have heard of him. Instead, he used his own money and created his own opportunity. Now he is one of the top-selling artists of all time. Good for you, Kanye, I respect that.
3) His mother made him great. There is no greater force in the life of a man than his mother. The mother is the first teacher, the first nurturer and the greatest cheerleader. Kanye's mother, Dr. Donda West, taught him to be confident, focused and intelligent. If only other artists would embrace intelligence and throw ignorance to the curb. There is no place in the world for stupidity.
4) Kanye has a chance to become another Muhammad Ali. While I find myself annoyed by Kanye's extreme arrogance, I am hopeful that he can channel this energy in to a Muhammad Ali-like career, one where he transcends his profession and inspires people all over the world. Kanye has the ability (and the ego) to pull this off, but he has absolutely got to stay focused, for even Muhammad Ali made a multitude of mistakes.
Keep pimpin', Kanye, I'm proud of you. But put that ego in check or at least accompany your confidence with a respect for other human beings. That Taylor Swift thing was a bit too much.

Mr. Boyce,
You can not be serious. Kanye is a full time idiot. This statement proves to me that he has MENTAL PROBLEMS and is suffering from dillusions of grandeuer. Ego on the loose. This is proof positive that African American CULTURE and class is in trouble. We may never see the likes of Percy Sutton and Eunice Johnson again unless we get back to basics. Kanye West is a foolish, childlike schizophrenic NUT CASE as far as I am concerned!
Bill Cosby was and is RIGHT! I bet you think Russel Simmons' RUSH CARD is right! Stick with what you know Mr. Watkins. True African American Culture of purpose is in TROUBLE!!! When we start taking the lies of twisted culture that continues to grow because people would rather go with the flow than calling for truth and holding up standards, handwriting's on the wall for our demise. No wonder we are going backwards vs. forwards, we no longer keep the main thing the main thing. Everybody's caught up in pop culture and the hype!!!

To Kalynn: Kanye is not an idot for thinking that he can effect change in our culture we all can affect change starting with one person who is willing to tell the truth, and not believe everything the media tells us. Americans are being lied to everyday and we do not take the time to investigate information that is given to us. We take everything the media tells us at face value, Kanye is telling us to analyze information before we take it as truth. And about the Taylor Swift controversy well, maybe he did not handle that exactly with the professionalism that you may have Kalynn, but one thing is clear his point got across that racism and record sales cannot reflect what the public knows that Taylor Swift does not have the talent or deserve the catergory that Beyonce who is a veteran in the business deserve taylor's award Black people are tired of the racism in the music industry and how they treat African Americans by standard the music industry lives off of African Americans, Latinos, Asians, and other miniorities who they do not want to acknowledge exist. It is sad that we do not acknowledge that minorities have talent as well and that Causian people do not live on an island, we all need each other.

Seems to me like the title of the article has nothing to do with what he actually says, which is that he -wants to- follow in the footsteps of people like Angelou. Just an alarmist attempt to snare people looking to see how Kanye stuck his foot in his mouth in front of a microphone again.
Its a shame that Kanye's music is obscured by a few tossed off remarks and well, a few mental breakdowns.
The fact that the maelstrom of popular opinion blows against a rapper for being egotistical is indicative of how far into mainstream culture Kanye West has advanced. Rappers compare themselves, to God, Jesus and any other historical figure of tremendous power and reach, natural disasters, and any number of supernatural or fictional beings of infinite power and wisdom on a daily basis without anyone batting an eye. Kanye West comes close (but no cigar) to being the 3,000th rapper to compare himself to Maya Angelou and its worth writing articles about? Impressive on his part.
I find the dichotomy of Kanye West to be one of the most interesting in recent memory. The guy came to the world's attention as a refreshingly humble and un-fashy personality- at least as far as MCs go. West was rapping about having confidence issues, health battles, his grandmother, working minimum wage jobs, buying bootleg clothes to try and impress women. In an era when 90% of the popular hip-hop extolled conscious free materialism and misanthropy, Kanye West was talking about the pressure to dress, act and talk just like everyone else.
Flash forward a few years and instead of being pressured to assimilate, he's in a constant state of trying to stay ahead of the imitators. All of a sudden rapping from an everyman's perspective was a significantly more economically viable career choice. Rappers like Common, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli that had hovered on the edge of success for years finally broke into the mainstream. Producers were starting to use samples for singles again thanks to West and Just Blaze's success with a more classic hip-hop sound that could compete with the synth-driven sounds popularized by Timbaland and the Neptunes.
Kanye pushed his sound in so many different directions over the past few years and every time he did- a new trend started. He has been the most innovative figure in mainstream hip-hop ever since The Blueprint.
I dont think that the media knows how to deal with a quirky nerd genius turned pop-culture icon, and i dont think that the quirky nerd genius knows how to deal with it either. It just constantly surprises me that West's antics draw attention that everyone else in hip-hop music would die for- to the point where a relatively benign quote such as this deserves articles with misleading titles such as this.
Just strange that the only superstar saying things like this:
"Man I promise, I'm so self conscious
That's why you always see me with at least one of my watches
Rollies and Pasha's done drove me crazy
I can't even pronounce nothing, pass that (Ver-say-zee)
Then I spent 400 bucks on this
Just to be like nigga you ain't up on this!
And I can't even go to the grocery store
Without some ones thats clean and a shirt with a team
It seems we living the american dream
But the people highest up got the lowest self esteem
The prettiest people do the ugliest things
For the road to riches and diamond rings
We shine because they hate us, floss cause they degrade us
We trying to buy back our 40 acres
And for that paper, look how low we a'stoop
Even if you in a Benz, you still a nigga in a coop/coupe"
Gets ripped for his egotism when every other rapper with that high of a profile is scared to confront any issue more personal or important than which pair of Nikes match his Bentley best.

I think Boyce ( I refuse to call him Dr) is being paid to elicit reactions through these blogs. His articles are reundant, and he is biggest scam since rent-to-own furniture.
