Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich tells Esquire magazine that he is "blacker than Barack Obama." The ousted governor is causing quite a stir with his comments, which will be featured in the February issue of Esquire. Blagojevich refers to himself as a real person in a political arena dominated by phonies, while referring to President Barack Obama as "this guy."
"I'm blacker than Barack Obama. I shined shoes. I grew up in a five-room apartment. My father had a little laundromat in a black community not far from where we lived," Blagojevich said. "I saw it all growing up." "What the (expletive)? Everything he's saying's on the teleprompter," Blagojevich told the magazine.
So far, the White House has refused to comment on the matter.
Hmmm, very interesting, Rod. So you can say that you are blacker than President Obama because you shined shoes and lived in a five-room apartment? The problem with that analysis, my friend, is that you may have lived the poor experience, but not necessarily the black experience. While there are millions of African Americans who grow up poor, there are millions more who have everything they need. What is most problematic about Blagojevich's "blacker than Obama" statement is that even most black people can't define what it really means to be black. That's like asking what it really means to be white. Most white people don't know the answer to that question.
Finally, I must humbly submit that I don't think that owning a laundromat in a black neighborhood gives you a "black man license" either. Almost none of the businesses in black communities are actually owned by black people, so this would not make you unique.
Perhaps rather than having a "blacker than Obama" contest with the president, you can simply stand on your own merits as a genuine advocate for the black community. You can cite your record for doing things that support the issues that matter most for African Americans, evidenced by the fact that so many African Americans in Illinois stood by you during your difficult time.
Oh yeah, trying to present yourself as the only genuine politician in a world of phonies is an old trick. Every politician does it, including Barack Obama. I'll believe you're a genuine politician when you're no longer a politician. Then, my friend, I might consider you to be "blacker than Obama" (whatever that's supposed to mean).

I'll say this Blago has done more for the black community in Illinois than Anyone. Yes, he's crooked like all Illinois politicians are but helped the people that really needed help.

Really, the black community in Illinois needed that much help that they had to depend on a corrupt politician to help them, ie toss a few coins their way. What did he give you? Did it solve all of your problems? You and mike need to start helping yourselves for goodness sake. Using terms like "sell-out" and mulatto, no wonder your "community" is always begging for handouts and there will always be corrupt politicians to keep tossing you crumbs while you lap them up and call sucessful "black" people sell-outs.

What an idiot!! Why on earth would Esquire publish such nonsense. He has insulted Black Americans, disrespected President Obama and to make matters worse the author of THIS article tries to give him a pass by giving this moron a backhanded compliment. This disgraced, crooked politician should be in jail. Giving him all of this face time in the media is yet another example of the dumbing down of both Black and White America. And "Dr" Watkins is another perfect example as well.

I couldnt let this one go. Blago is seeking attention like a 4 year old at a Toys RUS. The fact that he has not been in the public eye for a minute, suggest that me that he was in the basement thinking of media strategy to get his name back in the news and make some cash. What better way than to attack Obama and us. He will be all over the news, writing books, doing interviews and whatever else. His comments are completely but giftedly stupid. Only a person with that much stupidity can be gifted at it. Yet, he like other whit men have this pre-conceive idea that just b/c we are born here that we have the same privileges as them throughout history. None of us should be surprise at what white men think of us or believe. We know they fear us, envy us, and want to be us...... What other dominate society builds weapons, creates false depictions, and aggressively through violenc and fear, to make other societies fear them, NONE, the Japs, the Chines, Africa, and other group spends less on defends and do not .10 of what europeans do, done, did, and will continue to make themselves feel superior.

Dr. Watkins - why don't you just accept a compliment for black people? Blago wants to hitch his sinking ship to the honorable, tried and tested black community. Obviously he's not black but he's voicing respect for blacks and also saying the president is a co-opted sellout which, so far, does hold merit. Pres. Obama is a mullato with only white ties to the USA, not black ones. I'm hopeful that he'll remember it's blacks who will keep his back and repay that loyalty eventually but voicing the need for targetted solutions for blacks. He can't do that now but it's still early in his presidency and he's doing as good a job as can be done IMO, considering everything he's juggling. He, and all US citizens, got DARN LUCKY on 12/25. He better make sure we don't have some violent attack on US soil. BTW Dr., try to keep a focus. Qual of life stats tracked by the govt show blacks at the bottom of all stats, so it's immaterial/irrelevant that not every black is in dire straits. You can't be concerned about the ones that are?

Lighten up people. Does it have to be that everytime someone mentions blacks that each word has to be dissected and analyzed. Geezsh!! We have our own problems to deal with. I'm sure the article asks the ex-Governor other questions but these two sentences prompts an entire article for debate. It's his opinion and we should just accept it as that. With this type of ridicule it would be reason enough for other races to just stay clear of all black issues which doesn't help anyone.

I would just like to know what the hell being black means?! I am a young black female and growing up I have been told by many white females who like or date black men that they were "blacker" than me... What does this mean? I was raised to speak a bit more properly and not constantly throw around the n***a in public but does this make me less of a black? I feel ppl that say those kinds of things are ignorant.

Black is as black does. If all you can do is be disrespectful and unloving to a black man but a white woman wants to love and support a black man, she's more black than you. Hell, the system creates black-hating blacks. I see em everyday and read there posts on these black interest sites all the time. I call them sadomasochists. You black women have a trait that I really don't like. You have a tendency to have a poison-mouth. Lot of verbal and emotional abuse. I see you do it alot to your young sons 0 - 14. After that you tend to straighten up quick. You don't notice that in you black women?
