Just when I thought the dumbest sound bite of the week had come from Georgetown University professor Michael Eric Dyson, with his Obama "runs from race like a black man runs from a cop" nonsense, in comes televangelist Pat Robertson's comments on the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Now Robertson, host of the Christian Broadcasting Network's 'The 700 Club,' has spit out some gems. First he declared that 9/11 was the result of God's wrath on America for not mandating school prayer. Later, he predicted a catastrophe in Orlando, Fla., because of "gay days" at Disney World. Then, there's his call for the assassination of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.
But this classic should be the granddaddy of 'em all (at 0.47 secs) ....
Now, to be fair, when Robertson said this, he was soliciting donations for the relief effort the CBN had put together. But if Robertson is this authority on God's anger and pretty much can peg when and where he gets pissed off, it's hard to see how evangelical Christians, who are the majority of viewing audience of 'The 700 Club,' would want to give money to people they believe had signed a pact with Satan and were thus cursed!
But rather than dwell on stupid old men like Robertson, it's best to debunk what he said so that people don't actually go off believing him.
The root of this whole "pact with the devil" trash goes back to a voodoo priest known as Dutty Boukman. Boukman is said to have called the slaves to arms against the French, beginning an uprising. The legend goes that he held a voodoo ritual with a few slaves, where a pig was sacrificed at a place called Bois Caimin. The ritual allegedly galvanized the black population for revolt. But nobody has ever been able to substantiate this story, nor has anyone ever found the bronze pig that was supposed to stand in Port-au-Prince as a monument, so modern historians dispute the entire story.
The likelihood is that the story was a bastardization by the French of a voodoo ritual, which they saw, but had no understanding of. Voodoo derives from several traditional African religions and came with Caribbean- and South American-bound slaves when they were brought to the West. The term "voodoo" is something made up by Hollywood.
The Boukman story has about as much credibility as American slave owners' insistence that "the natural state of Negroes is servitude" due to our being the supposed descendants of Ham, whose children were singled out for slavery because he embarrassed his drunken father, Noah. Slave owners actually twisted this passage of Genesis (Chapt. 9: 21-27) for their own sick, racist purposes.
Robertson is no better.
The real background of Haiti's poverty began when President Thomas Jefferson instituted post-revolution sanctions in 1804, which lasted nearly 60 years and economically isolated the fledgling state not only from the rest of the Caribbean but the rest of the world as well. Denied the developing economic infrastructure America had after its own revolution, the nation fell in to a cycle of assassination and despotism that spawned from class-structure conflict rooted in colonial times. It continued until President Woodrow Wilson intervened in 1915. When U.S. troops left in 1934, the Haitian military set up a new autocratic government, which, in turn, spawned further cycles of corruption and exploitation -- internal and external -- that continue to the present.

Dear Isrealine,
# two on your list in your comment is what idealistically, it should be all about. Spoken like a true member of the Order! However, allow me to illuminate all seekers of Light concerning one segment of your comment. Let it be understood that all sentient beings prior to taking action, must first journey into the future in contemplation of the action. Here a decision is made whether to act upon it or not. It's similar to the decision announced in a courtroom by the court, ( judge ). Only AFTER this process can the being execute the action. This decision is called a JUDGEMENT. Prior to becomming friend or foe, an individual usually makes a judgement concerning the prospective friend/foe. Even the entity/entities condemming judgement, has made a judgement themself/themselves, in that they have already judged/decided that judgement is wrong/inappropriate. The homosapien cannot exist without judgement, or, without someone doing it for him/her. Remember, even when you tie your shoelaces, ( if you use them ), you must first DECIDE to tie them. That's called a judgement, ( and a wise decision at that ). When we try NOT to judge, we find ourselves asleep at the wheel, thinking of nothing, which is utterly, impossible if one is yet alive and doing.
I certainly hope that what I've demonstrated by a priori explanation will expand the consciousness of those whom seek wisdom.
Peace Profound!

Every one critisizing Pat Robertson got it all wrong!. You are looking at the event in Haiti with canal minds. This is more that the ordinary eye can see. Go and study the Bible- the mind of GOD. This is non other that judgement even though I really sympathise with the people of Haiti. This is a time to call ourselves to order, do a thorough spiritual check. We should all get on our knees and seek for the mercy of GOD. It is common knowledge that this country is filled with voodoo practitioners who walk contrary to the will of GOD. That is not to say there is no voodoo in other countries but who knows where disaster will hit next. People need the LORD and we had better get on our knees and seek GOD. Pat is right but truth is always bitter to those that are delussional. Pray for HAITI and pray for yourself too.

It saddens me that so many who are not from Haiti dare to comment and the name calling is so unnecessary. I was born in Port Au Prince but raised here in the United States. At the age of 12, I had the chance to visit my birthplace...a place that i will NEVER return to nor permit my children to embrace. I vividly recall the fear of hearing and seeing an actual voodoo festival and celebration. It is the worship of satan, the worship of other gods, the pure worship of evil. At the age of 14, I was at the home of a relative who practiced the same, this same aunt was found dead years later, in a cemetary, on top of a grave. Living in Florida and working in a predominantly Haitian environment, I have experienced first hand, the use of threats with voodoo, from Haitians. Only because of my walk with Christ, am I not afraid of these people today. Pat Robertson has the courage, the one prophet in today's time who dares to open his mouth and declare the truth. My heart breaks for the people and for the country...there are many more of us who know the truth. Too many people are running around and accusing us and calling us names when we decide to tell the truth yet the truth is told to spare lives not to diminish or take, but to spare lives...people choose to remain ignorant by hurling names and labeling. God lead me to read the book of Jonah for a better understanding of what is going on...yes He is indeed a God of love but also a God of judgment...when enough is enough. My heart bleeds for a people who choose to be ignorant and for those who can not see what is going on. NO AMOUNT OF RELIEF, be it financially, emotionally, medically, from any source, in no manner will ever restore Haiti, until the very nation is dedicated to GOD. Everything that we do for that nation is FUTILE. if people can't see that after the tropical storms, the hurricanes and now these earthquakes because aftershocks are earthquakes...you will NEVER see it. We are not Jesus freaks nor are we religious phobics, we are GOD PHOBICS. And what you don't know Madison Gray, President Preval was warned many times..many times, even this past summer, myself as a witness, to the warnings of this destruction that was coming, and it's far from over. People were sent to tell him, to urge to plead for him to denounce, as a leader, what was done, to reverse the curse on that island nation, he and other leaders, scoffed. You have no idea what thoughts are now running through their heads at night...For anyone interested, I advise you to read the book of Jonah and stop running around thinking that God will not judge or allow judgment, if you don't know HIM and don't know what is going on, spiritually. Would God wait 200 years to allow punishment, yes. God's compassion is the only thing that has spared the country these last two hundred years. The only effective thing that we can do for Haiti is to pray that a leader will stop walking in ignorance and embrace the real answer to what is happening over there and do what needs to be done. Nothing we do, nothing we do, nothing we do, will ever restore....until. And for the wise one who will probably try to trash me...yes, I am aiding in the relief there. I have two younger brothers and a father who have lost everything. My mission is to bring them here to the states and until the government permits, I will support them financially. And,to anyone who still chooses to participate in voodoo, I say let their god help them. God is not sleep, people....Pat Robertson...be of good courage...many of us know what you are talking about...ignore the ignorant.

I asked the same question when I picked up someone at the air force base...The first words out of her mouth was "God Bless America". She cried realizing that she survived the earthquake, only two houses remain standing on her street, both the homes of pastors, bringing the gospel to Haiti. I said to her, "What about us, there is a lot going on here also, who is to say we are not next?" Her answer, "Our country was founded on biblical principles. The founders came here so that they could worship the Lord, our laws, original laws were scripture based, this country was dedicated to God from day one, God bless America."

For the record I would like to say that there is nothing in the Bible or the Word of God that even remotely justifies how slaves were treated in the United States,Haiti,or any other countries where slaves were treated like they were less than human. Do not blame the Bible or the God of the Christians for evil White men twisting the teachings of the Bible to justify committing inhuman acts of cruelty against peoples of color. That is just plain wrong and evil. God bless.

It's amusing that Pat Robertson & others want to keep harping that Haiti made a pact with the devil by way of the usage of voodoo. If that's true then the whole of America and other countries should currently be in the same devastated state as Haiti. There is mess & good to found everywhere. 'Voodoo' isn't only practiced in Haiti & there are other religious groups in Haiti ie different christian groups and don't forget catholics. Only G_D knows the exact reason something dramatic happens anywhere so we all need to remember not to pass judgement lest we be judged. And isn't it interesting to see that groups that try to kill each other are pulling together to help Haiti in it's time of need?

THANKS AMERICA AND ALSO TO THE MEDIA ABOVE ALL TO "CNN" FOR HELPING HATI WITH HEART AND OF COURSE SINCERITY!!! We haitian citizens, do not care about what certain minded rustic thoughts are springing on this himalaya of corpses which may happen anywhere, anytime; For history, Haiti used to bring help for freedom to so many neighbours around the Central and North America. And it used to be the pearl of Caribbes as the first independent black nation, that can be approved by the well known historians all over the world. That's the main reason it's always better to be informed before charging the mother nature; Like Epicharmus 450 BC, said: "A WISE MAN MUST BE WISE BEFORE ACTING OR SAYING, NOT AFTER" this is just for the next such minded comments, May God bless Haiti!!!

"HIMALAYA OF CORPSES"
This himalaya sprang up just in 35 seconds over the pearl of Caribbes, where the tears and the cries were in the air all over the world, regarding Ipagnola which always meant the land of hills.
It used to represent the Caribbean memories, built close to three hundred years ago. As the first independent colored nation, it brought help for freedom to so many neighbours around the Central and North coasts, where their precious liquid ran into the rivers of some lands;
Ispagnola used to be the pearl of Caribbes, then, it has turned to a himalaya of corpses, where the tears and cries have been heard all over the world, as fast as it has fallen just in 35 seconds like the bing-bang of the 21st century, touching the hearts of even those who used to speculate on the mother nature. Is it a punishment or a correction? Either one, it might be a message for the fellow observers or neighbours...

Ceasar Chevez and many leaders contend that a weapon was tested in the near vacinity of Haiti. It is rumored that said weapon was experimental and was to be used in the event of an Iranian confrontation. Rick Sanchez mentioned this on his CNN news show, however, he says there's no validity to the rumor. Sort of makes me wonder why he'd mention it in the first place if it held no water. I'd say that he was instumental in planting the seed of suspiscion.
