Update: The FBI is now performing an investigation of their own to see if there was "a potential violation of federal civil rights criminal laws." The teen's mother, Terez Miles, says she believes her son was targeted by the police because of racism. The officers involved have all been reassigned while both the city and FBI investigate.
You wouldn't expect Jordan Miles to be the kind of kid who'd be beaten beyond recognition by the police. When his mother let him out of the house 10 days ago, she probably didn't think that her well-behaved son would return home with a face looking worse than a prize fighter who'd been knocked out.
Miles is not a thug, drug dealer, hustler, thief or killer. He's just a studious teenager who plays the viola for a jazz band and orchestra at the highly prestigious Creative and Performing Arts High School in Pittsburgh, Pa.
On Jan. 12, at approximately 11 p.m., Miles was leaving his mother's home and headed to his grandmother's, where he spends most of his nights. As he walked up the street, he noticed three men in a white car. "But I thought nothing of it," he told the Associated Press.
The men then jumped out of the car and allegedly yelled, "Where's the money? Where's the gun? Where's the drugs?"
"It was intimidating; I thought I was going to be robbed," Miles said.
He then stated that when he tried to get away from the men, he slipped on the sidewalk. That is when the officers attacked him. According to Miles, they proceeded to beat, kick, choke and punch him, yanking out one of his dreadlocks and beating him mercilessly. In fact, Miles claims that he didn't even know that the men were police officers until he saw other uniformed officers arrive on the scene. Up until that point, he thought he was being abducted.
Of course, on any case, we must wait until the facts are all released. I am going to speak today with Rev. Al Sharpton on his radio show, and I will share more of my thoughts at that point. But based on what I know about this case, and what I know about police in general (my father was a high-ranking police official for 25 years), I have the following thoughts:
1) This case looks very bad for the police: There is nothing about Miles that indicates he would be in any situation in which he deserved to be attacked by police. The Pittsburgh Police Department has a PR nightmare on its hands, and I hope ranking officers are intelligent about how they manage the situation. If Miles' story is accurate, then it is my greatest hope that he and his mother sue the pants off this department for the irresponsible behavior of its officers.
2) Miles' sacrifice may help a lot of people: Too many Americans want to believe that every black man who gets beaten by police somehow earned the beating he received. That's not always the case, even for men who have a criminal record. Miles is an outstanding student and a violinist with no apparent history of this kind of behavior, though, perhaps he can help shed light on how all of us are vulnerable to police brutality and racial profiling.
3) It is not inconceivable that the officers were trying to rob him: Many police officers across the country have a long history of robbing drug dealers. While most officers do not engage in this kind of behavior, many officers quickly realized that no jury is going to believe the word of a drug dealer over that of a law enforcement officer. So, some officers get away with robbing drug dealers for the same reasons that some men get away with killing prostitutes: Nobody cares. If we are serious about weeding out corruption in law enforcement, though, we must ensure that the rights of all Americans are protected, not just those whom we feel are innocent. The deep-seated disdain that many Americans have for police is largely due to the fact that our nation has never thought about the dangers of allowing unquestionable power of the state over its citizens. While I didn't join the band wagon on the Henry Louis Gates Case (I thought Obama made a mistake on that one - if only he would speak up for Jordan Miles the way he did for Gates), I could certainly agree that Gates' situation was indicative of the fact that many police officers feel that they can verbally and physically abuse citizens without any significant repercussions. But if I didn't do anything wrong, then you have no right to yell at me, detain me or mistreat me. I don't care if you are a cop or not.
4) Take your time when evaluating police brutality cases: The most effective challenge to police brutality is to ensure that every case is carefully evaluated before we jump to conclusions. Although I am absolutely outraged by what appears to have happened to Miles, I want to learn all of the facts before passing final judgment. In spite of what we might see on the surface, there can always be another side to the story. In this case, however, I am truly skeptical that the officers can justify what they did to this young man.
5) Let's not forget the good officers in America: Even those who claim to hate the police are always the first ones to call the cops when they need protection. Good law enforcement officers are critical to our nation's well-being, and they should be respected. At the same time, officers must earn the respect they expect to receive from the American public. A long history of abusing authority has led to millions of Americans not trusting police officers, and for good reason. So, if these police officers did illegally beat Jordan Miles, it is critical that the Pittsburgh Police Department do everything in its power to prosecute these officers to the fullest extent of the law.

I concur wholeheartedly with your sentiment! I just said the same thing on my facebook. In fact, White men working for the judicial system seemingly have lost their minds now that America has an African American president. So, beating the hell out of black males or killing them, as has happened in DC, VA, and MD is a way of taking out their frustrations, I suppose. Mike Vicks went to prison for killing dogs, but a police officer can do worse to black men and be acquitted!!!

ITS NOT EVEN ABOUT WHO THE PRESIDENT IS BUT ABOUT JUSTICE AND FAIRNESS. THESE SO CALLED PROTECTORS OF THE LAW ARE THE ONES WHO WE NEED TO RID OURSELVES OF . STARTING FROM THE JUDGES ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THESE RACIST COPS BECAUSE THEY ARE MOSTLY MADE UP OF HATERS, RACIST AND FORMAL KKK MEMBERS WHICH IS NOTHING MORE THAN PROPERLY UNEDUCATED GANG MEMBERS IN BLACK ROBES AND BLUE SUITS PRETENDING TO UPHOLD THE LAW SO THAT IT MAY PROVIDE A SHIELD FOR THEM TO TREAT BLACK PEOPLE AND HISPANICS IN A VERY HARSH WAY (SOMETIME LEAD TO DEATH) WE NEED TO GET RID OF ALL OF THEM BY HAVING THE GOVERNMENT TO INTERVENE STATE BY STATE, CITY BY CITY, PRECINCT BY PRECINCT AND GET EVERY NAME OF THE STAFF AND THE HIRING PROCESS AND INVESTIGATE ALL TO SEE WHO IS EMPLOYED LEGALLY WITH PROPER TRAINING AND WHO IS THEIR RIDING ON THE BACK OF CONVENIENT TIMES.. HALF OF THE COPS HAVE NOT HAD PROPER TRAINING AND THE OTHER HALF NO TRAINING AT ALL...IT IS MAINLY WHO THEY KNOW IN THE DEPARTMENT..BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS "WE NEED TO GOVERN OUR OWN PEOPLE AND HIRE COPS FOR OUR OWN COMMUNITIES" TO REALLY SERVE AND PROTECT , TO GO THROUGH MENTAL, PHYSICAL AND PERHAPS LIE DETECTOR TEST TO REVEAL IF THEY ARE UP TO THE STANDARDS TO SERVE THE PEOPLE...ALL PEOPLE AS THEY VOWED. THE COPS HAS LOUNGE A STREIGHT OUT WAR AGAINST OUR PEOPLE AND IT IS TIME WE FIXD THIS IN A WAY THAT THEY WILL NEVER CONSIDER THESE TACTICS AGAIN.

You are soooooo right. I always felt as though that there are some officers that shouldn't be officers. Once some of them put that uniform on they think they on the top of the world and they can do what ever they want to put and get away with it. I took a course in Criminal Justice and I asked a question one time about how come officers in uniform can do whtat ever they want to people in the street and get away with it? His response was that the courts are more lenient towards officers in uniform. Even when they are wrong. Cause they could say we were threatin by this person or he fit a discription of someone who they were looking for and we asked him to stop and he kept going. I don't care what nobody says officers LIE. They have been doing it for years just to proctect themselves and knowing they are wrong. They can be very arrogant once they put them uniforms on.
I always felt as though if an officer is wrong he is wrong regardless if he is in uniform. Once they start being punish for what they do to people in the street that is unnecessary it will put a stop it or slow it down.
I am not saying that all officers are bad because we do have some good officers out there. But the few that are bad ones that are out there, make the good ones look bad.

I knew that the election of Obama did not signal the end of racism and prejudice and racial discrimination and such in America the moment Obama was elected. So,I am not the least bit surprised by an incident like this. However, like the author urged,I am determined to not jump to conclusions and immediately assume that this young man did nothing to provoke the officers. However, like the author,I highly doubt that he did anything wrong. Nevertheless,we will have to wait and see how this all plays out. God bless justice to be done here.

What these horrible soon to be fired and sued cops did has no reflection of President OBAMA. Hate and Racism has existed since before Christ and won't end till Christ returns to end this world. But thanks God for Real Strong Fearless, civil rights activist such King, Jackson, Sharpton, Farrakan, Mrs. Parks who stand up and bring light to these issues. Put these cops behind bars, sue the pants of them and the city and then tell the TAXPAYERS where there TAX dollars are spent.

Until the culture of law enforcement changes along with those of our nation's judges, NOTHING will change. As usual, law enforcement officers will be totally vendicated as no sitting judge wants to be labled "soft on crime" even where there was NO crime!

This could not possibly have happened. Not to a black kid in America. According to most whites this does not happen. Blacks have the same rights and are treated the same as whites. WRONG!! This crap still happens and will never stop until there are tougher laws against law enforcement. I am a 37 year old black man without any kind of record and I can't tell you the numerous times I have been stopped, harassed, or questioned by the police. Why are you driving at 3:00am? Because I worked 2 hours over at my job. So I asked them why are you riding around 3:00 on the morning. I lived in Grand Prairie, TX in a black neighborhood. They should have been questioning why the white person in riding 3:00am in the hood. We all know why? Too many stories to tell, but many black men have the same stories. Just because you may hate the police you still have to call them when needed just to keep from going to jail yourself. Police need to stop protecting each other when they are wrong.
