Update: The FBI is now performing an investigation of their own to see if there was "a potential violation of federal civil rights criminal laws." The teen's mother, Terez Miles, says she believes her son was targeted by the police because of racism. The officers involved have all been reassigned while both the city and FBI investigate.
You wouldn't expect Jordan Miles to be the kind of kid who'd be beaten beyond recognition by the police. When his mother let him out of the house 10 days ago, she probably didn't think that her well-behaved son would return home with a face looking worse than a prize fighter who'd been knocked out.
Miles is not a thug, drug dealer, hustler, thief or killer. He's just a studious teenager who plays the viola for a jazz band and orchestra at the highly prestigious Creative and Performing Arts High School in Pittsburgh, Pa.
On Jan. 12, at approximately 11 p.m., Miles was leaving his mother's home and headed to his grandmother's, where he spends most of his nights. As he walked up the street, he noticed three men in a white car. "But I thought nothing of it," he told the Associated Press.
The men then jumped out of the car and allegedly yelled, "Where's the money? Where's the gun? Where's the drugs?"
"It was intimidating; I thought I was going to be robbed," Miles said.
He then stated that when he tried to get away from the men, he slipped on the sidewalk. That is when the officers attacked him. According to Miles, they proceeded to beat, kick, choke and punch him, yanking out one of his dreadlocks and beating him mercilessly. In fact, Miles claims that he didn't even know that the men were police officers until he saw other uniformed officers arrive on the scene. Up until that point, he thought he was being abducted.
Of course, on any case, we must wait until the facts are all released. I am going to speak today with Rev. Al Sharpton on his radio show, and I will share more of my thoughts at that point. But based on what I know about this case, and what I know about police in general (my father was a high-ranking police official for 25 years), I have the following thoughts:
1) This case looks very bad for the police: There is nothing about Miles that indicates he would be in any situation in which he deserved to be attacked by police. The Pittsburgh Police Department has a PR nightmare on its hands, and I hope ranking officers are intelligent about how they manage the situation. If Miles' story is accurate, then it is my greatest hope that he and his mother sue the pants off this department for the irresponsible behavior of its officers.
2) Miles' sacrifice may help a lot of people: Too many Americans want to believe that every black man who gets beaten by police somehow earned the beating he received. That's not always the case, even for men who have a criminal record. Miles is an outstanding student and a violinist with no apparent history of this kind of behavior, though, perhaps he can help shed light on how all of us are vulnerable to police brutality and racial profiling.
3) It is not inconceivable that the officers were trying to rob him: Many police officers across the country have a long history of robbing drug dealers. While most officers do not engage in this kind of behavior, many officers quickly realized that no jury is going to believe the word of a drug dealer over that of a law enforcement officer. So, some officers get away with robbing drug dealers for the same reasons that some men get away with killing prostitutes: Nobody cares. If we are serious about weeding out corruption in law enforcement, though, we must ensure that the rights of all Americans are protected, not just those whom we feel are innocent. The deep-seated disdain that many Americans have for police is largely due to the fact that our nation has never thought about the dangers of allowing unquestionable power of the state over its citizens. While I didn't join the band wagon on the Henry Louis Gates Case (I thought Obama made a mistake on that one - if only he would speak up for Jordan Miles the way he did for Gates), I could certainly agree that Gates' situation was indicative of the fact that many police officers feel that they can verbally and physically abuse citizens without any significant repercussions. But if I didn't do anything wrong, then you have no right to yell at me, detain me or mistreat me. I don't care if you are a cop or not.
4) Take your time when evaluating police brutality cases: The most effective challenge to police brutality is to ensure that every case is carefully evaluated before we jump to conclusions. Although I am absolutely outraged by what appears to have happened to Miles, I want to learn all of the facts before passing final judgment. In spite of what we might see on the surface, there can always be another side to the story. In this case, however, I am truly skeptical that the officers can justify what they did to this young man.
5) Let's not forget the good officers in America: Even those who claim to hate the police are always the first ones to call the cops when they need protection. Good law enforcement officers are critical to our nation's well-being, and they should be respected. At the same time, officers must earn the respect they expect to receive from the American public. A long history of abusing authority has led to millions of Americans not trusting police officers, and for good reason. So, if these police officers did illegally beat Jordan Miles, it is critical that the Pittsburgh Police Department do everything in its power to prosecute these officers to the fullest extent of the law.

Wow...Dave...first of all, I know your white just from reading your comment, so you can never know what we go through. 2nd of all...if you believe stats of this sort, then your even dumber than your comments convey you to be. Let's keep it 100%, us "minorities" are the by far the MAJORITY...but people who wrote the stats and people like you who read and buy into the stats given are SCARED...PLAIN AND SIMPLE...AND PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS AFRAID OF WHAT'S DIFFERENT. SO CUT THAT CRAP....STOP BELIEVING EVERYTHING THAT U READ AND YOU HEAR...
ON TOP OF THAT...IT TAKES A BUNCH OF PUNKS LIKE THOSE WHITE BOY COPS TO BEAT UP ONE BLACK KID...ESPECIALLY A BLACK KID THAT HAS A CLEAN RECORD AND NEVER HAD ANY INTENT ON DOING MISC. ACTIVITIES AT NIGHT...THESE DUDES BETTER GO TO JAIL OR IF NOT AT LEAST GRANT JORDAN SOME MONEY...THIS IS THE REASON I HATE AND DON'T TRUST COPS...THEY THINK THEY HAVE POWER AND START TO RUN IT...STOP ABUSING YOUR POWER OVER US...IF I SAID IT ONCE, ILL SAY IT 1,000,000 TIMES...WE ARE STILL UNDER SLAVE RULES...ITS JUST A LOT MORE MODERN AND A LOT MORE INDIRECT.

What does it matter that the kid was bright and "going places"? His life is not any more valuable than a kid who doesn't play the violin or get good grades! Can we please stop equating the educated with value.

Diddo. You are absolutely right. His life isn't more important. You're absolutely right. I conquer. However, it further emphasizes the inadequate treatment of black men in this country. Something has to be done to show that a black man's life, any black man, is more valueable than what is perceived. The fact the this young man doesn't fit the "profile" shows just how unsafe this particular group of men is is our country.

While I am completely outraged by this news, I am refreshed to see the author's 5 points for the same reason he wrote them: there could be much more to this story and people should be wary to come to conclusions without the facts. Yet at the same time there could be very little. It could very well be the policemen were ignorant asses who deserve to face the punishment of their crimes.
Nevertheless, the fact this occurred is truly saddening no matter what the truth may be.

Mimi:
Congrats on your recent achievement of obtaining a higher level of education. God bless you and your family for providing you with that opportunity.
stats can be viewed in many ways my research I did was in total 1 year long, I basically in written letter asked for every police blotter in the nation for 2008. The hard part is that there are only 2 races involved in hate crimes 1 black they other white, so even the government says Latino's are white and it was very difficult to separate. I also used government reports but weighted them to a lesser degree.
1. My report was not exclusive to any 1 race.
2. whites have there problems to say the least, they have managed to steal they entire worlds money.
3.Latino's do commit crime just like every body else and every crime committed against some body you don’t know should be considered a hate crime.
4. I know as much about racism and slavery that you do, what you are saying is that racism and hatred should be carried down through the DNA and manifest itself into form via people. You had nothing to do with slavery/you where not involved and every white person on the street you see did not neither.
If that is the case then all races have reason to hate 1 another lets remember that 1200 - 1400 black tribes went around the coast of Africa and be-headed 1,2000 whites and this is not the first time in history that has happened. Do your research and you will see
5. Difference: Whites are classified as a none protected race than to yours truly Obama so know no white person in America has civil rights. You can youtube that if you want.
6. The biggest victim of white crimes committed by the American imperialis "rich white men" is the poor white's.
As per you dating a Latino, not sure what to say about that.
Imagine if every white came out with a sharpton type of public appearance when a crime is committed against them by black/Latino, that would mean we would have about 30 pulbic appearances a day based on rape and murder. Staggering

First of all Dave,
If you are classified as white because they classify Latinos as white how the hell would you know how many crimes were actually committed on white people by blacks? How do you k now those people were not Hispanic. Oh and lets not forget that Asians are classed as whites too. I think they do that to make you all feel special or something. Sorry but I love being black and watching our progression despite the hatred and violence against us. The media is run by white supremacist and will never ever portray the black man in a positive light. We are the original man and we walk the earth with a heart of peace and spirit of truth. Just like God is good and loving but you will feel his wrath when you provoke him. Just like you will with the original man.
Another thing. If you look at the relationship between cops and blacks you will see that we don’t trust them and will do what we can to avoid them. A lot of blacks don’t always report crimes done to them because we know the police really don’t give a crap. In my lifetime I have been the recipient of several accounts sexual abuse and verbal abuse by white folks. No I didn’t run to the police. Why? Because they cant be trusted. Black, White or Latino. My daddy stood up for me and spoke and made demands and threats (if needed) on my behalf. He was my police. Cops have the homeboy network and they look out for each other first. I used to want to be a cop just to show these MF’s that they cant just do anything to me and get away with it but when I really began to see how law enforcement is in this country, I was totally turned off. I know from experience and its even worse in the Military.
And this country was built on the back of mine and your people. I am part Native American and this is truly more my home than theirs. They have a history built on murder and destruction. Look at how they are ruled by the dollar. They don’t care about you nor your children. Its really sad how brainwashed you are as a Latino person. But its cool because in the end you will see that they have no respect for your people or your kind either. Just like I will always be a N**ger to them you will always be a Sp*ck to them. And I promise, they will show you.
This really scares me now because I have a teenage son and he is a wonderful child. I have no complaints about his behavior. I am raising him to be a strong black man but unfortunately he still has to live in a world where crap like this is happening to our young men.
You disgust me with your “statistics”. Shoot half the black people I know don’t fill out any census information so how the hell they know how many of us are here and what our percentage is in this country. Government stats are BS. I had the swine flu, does the government have data on that, NO. You have to take statistics with a grain of salt. I even know statisticians that know those statistics are incorrect. Its Marshall law here in the US and law enforcement can do whatever they want and be justified.
I hope you get your mind right Dave. You are really white washed.

DAVE I AM NOT AS IMPRESSED WITH YOUR EDUCATIONAL SKILLS AS YOU ARE WITH MINE. APPARENTLY YOU WERE RESPONDING TO SOMEONE ELSE...BUT YOU ARE POSTING TO ME.
I THINK YOU NEED TO CHECK YOUR READING SKILLS. I NEVER DATED A LATINO....I LOVE MY BLACK MEN....MMMMMMMMMMMMM GOOOD!!!!!....BY THE WAY SO DOES YOUR WHITE WOMEN....THEY LOVE THE BLACK MAN ALMOST AS MUCH AS BLACK WOMEN DO. IT AMAZES ME THAT THE WHITE MAN HAS SPENT DECADES TRYING TO CONVINCE THE WORLD THAT BLACK MEN ARE CRIMINALS AND SUCH BAD PEOPLE...AND YET THEY CANNOT CONVINCE THEIR OWN WHITE WOMEN OF THIS FALSE HOOD...I WONDER WHY?
MAYBE BECAUSE THE WHITE WOMAN KNOWS EXACTLY WHY THE WHITE MAN IS SO JEALOUS OF THE BLACK MAN...THAT HE HAS TO LIE AND LIE AND LIE ABOUT HIM... AND BEAT HIM DOWN.....INTERESTING....VERY INTERESTING.

Man what is wrong with these people, don't they have any respect, you wanna know why, cause they cant have a real deadlock of their own thats why. Cause they cant realize and absorb the fact that, Black People, Hispanics and Asians will dominate America in the following years to come, Obama is a stepping stone, there are still more black presidents that are coming and in no time Hispanic and Asians.....America is a land of Freedom that we all can live in.
Thankyou.

We live in a country where "white" monsters disguised as good just men murdered and took everything from the indigenous people. They have been doing this ever since they murdered their way out of the snow covered caves of Europe. This is their mantra.
In this country "African-Americans" will always be a target for "white" racist abuse in every way. No matter how rich a "black" person gets he is still a target for mentally disturbed "white" power monsters.
If one were to take count of every incident of "white" on black crimes he would soon find himself busy recording a new incident(s) every single day.
Don't ever call policemen good because they are not. They can be given the order to murder you where you stand and most of them would. Even "black" policemen are not to be trusted because they are part of the "storm trooper" mentality.
The military can be easily manipulated in the same way.
My suggestion to all "people of color" is to watch your backs, because you never know when it will be your turn to suffer "white" abuse because you are "black"!
The Jews thought they were in a good place with wealth and standing before Hitler came along and stirred up what was always brewing just below the mental surface of German minds.
Here many African-Americans think they're in a good place with their education, money, and standing. Don't fool yourselves!
