In the latest in a long history of "interesting" statements, Fox News host Bill O'Reilly has compared The South Side of Chicago to Haiti. Here's the quote:
"And I'm going, I don't know how that's possible. If you've ever been to the South Side of Chicago, I mean, it's a disaster. Alright? It's like Haiti. it's like - I've been to Haiti a couple times, and I support some charities there, but Haiti just never gets better no matter how much money you put in there because they don't have a system."
I've never been a fan of Bill O'Reilly, especially after he spent an entire week campaigning heavily for me to be fired from Syracuse University. But I've come to understand O'Reilly's game, and to some extent, I can appreciate it for it's effectiveness. The man makes a lot of money because he earns it. He has gotten good at manipulating the fears and irrational thinking behind those who wish to turn the clock back on our nation to a time when only wealthy white men had a voice. Unfortunately for O'Reilly, those days are gone.
Even Bill O'Reilly isn't dumb enough to believe half the stuff he says. In many cases, he saves a pile of racially-offensive comments to spark fire under his visibility to promote the work he's doing. In this particular case, he is working to promote the silly tour that he and Glenn Beck are doing across the nation. But the truth is that none of us should pay attention to what these men have to say, since neither of them are sufficiently informed on any of the meaningful issues of our nation. Beck and O'Reilly, like the recovering drug addict Rush Limbaugh, are entertainers, and entertainers should not be guiding public policy.
Now, to quickly explain the reasoning (or lack thereof) behind O'Reilly's remarks, his comments about the South Side of Chicago and Haiti reflect a fundamental disrespect for the people in both areas. No, the South Side of Chicago is not like Haiti, we know that. O'Reilly, like most conservatives, seems to feel that government funding cannot improve American lives. But what O'Reilly forgets (as most conservatives do) is that the government has played a long and historic role in destroying black communities across the world, including Haiti and the South Side of Chicago. The South Side of Chicago is relatively poor because, for over 400 years, the government supported systemic policies to keep wealth out of the hands of black people, so there was no wealth to be passed from parent to child. These wealth differentials led to disparate tax bases between the inner city and suburbs of America, creating inferior public schools and economic infrastructure in areas like South Side Chicago. That's how the mess was created, but O'Reilly probably doesn't understand this because he is not very well-educated.
The point here is this: The government helped to create the problems of the South Side of Chicago, so it can play a role in solving those problems. People like O'Reilly simply represent ignorant manifestations of the same racist past that led to the creation of those problems in the first place. Fortunately for Bill, many of the power brokers in America think the way that he does, which is the foundation of white supremacy. Perhaps one day this might change.
The best thing you could ever do for Bill O'Reilly is pay attention to him and legitimate his viewpoints by listening. I haven't watched his show in years, not because he is a conservative, but because he is intellectually irrelevant.

I think Bill O'Reilly is wrong since inner city Detroit looks more like Haiti with high unemployment, no grocery stores, etc

The poor has gotten poor and who would of that to be possible but Dr. Boyce was right we can't compare what's happening to Haiti it's a Disaster right now children are homeless and without parents.Bill is so ignorant it's not even funny to me anymore that bs he spit's out of his mouth is so wrong,he needs to read up on the history of what this country has done to people of all color and wonder why he could even begin to compare and to say it, was so heartless it's people who have to live with that everyday and he said it like it was no big deal. I dislike Bill i can honestly say nothing that ignorant bastard says makes any sense ever and i can't believe that he has any fans at all.

It is hard to ignore these racist individuals on Fox News. They have a forum each night on national tv. They bash President Obama 24/7. We as black people shouldn't allow this. The president's failures are going to be blamed on the color of his skin not the major problems that was created before him.

Yes it is so pathetic. This man is barely in office a year and now because he has not solved all the problems this country faces, he is now everybodys whipping boy. They gave Bush 8 years to put this country in this condition and he was never ridiculed like this. When he was running for office I told a man Obama becoming President will not necessarily be a good thing because he will never be able to do enough. I remember a member of congress saying that he hopes Obama fails as President. And this is suppose to be such a great country.

I could not agree more. People tend to 'dismiss' O'Reilly and others and ignorant but the truth is, a LOT of regular folks listen to what they have to say. As a whole, the general public doesn't take the time to listen to multiple sides of an issue....they're just to darn lazy so they agree with whatever the current sentiment (sp?) is. We should -- at all costs -- be aware of what's out there. Remember....the devil is always busy.

Dr. Watkins - If Bill O'Reilly is intellectually irrelevant, after reading your piece, I shudder to think where that leaves you. Down there somewhere, rock bottom I suspect, with the unconscious wonks who think that everything troubling minorities, especially blacks, is never at their doorstep. This is a tired and pathetic position that, more than any other single belief, is precluding that particular minority group from elevating themselves in this society. For my money, I'll take Booker T. Washington's approach to black equality and advancement over the seemingly always used and inferior philosophy still in favor today - the one promoted by DuBois.
Get it straight... and right for a change. Obama will not - cannot - do it for you because he is not capable enough as a leader, especially with such a specious cause. (Remember, he cannot even close a small prison.) And forget reparations with this economy while he is in office, likely four years. The country cannot afford 100 trillion dollars over the next 50 years or so to make amends for the slavery era.
Roll up your sleeves, push families, and look to the long haul. It is all that will work for you.
