Former NBA player Paul Shirley has a lot to say, regarding whether he will donate any money to the people of Haiti since the Jan. 12th earthquake.
According to the NY Daily News, Shirley blogged on flipcollective.com:
"I haven't donated a cent to the Haitian relief effort. And I probably will not. I haven't donated to the Haitian relief effort for the same reason that I don't give money to homeless men on the street. Based on past experiences, I don't think the guy with the sign that reads "Need You're Help" is going to do anything constructive with the dollar I might give him. If I use history as my guide, I don't think the people of Haiti will do much with my money either.
... Shouldn't much of the responsibility for the disaster lie with the victims of that disaster?"
During his brief stint as a basketball player--he only played 18 games--Shirley played with the Atlanta Hawks, Chicago Bulls and Pheonix Suns. He used to spend part of his time blogging for ESPN, up until he blogged these comments yesterday:
"Shouldn't there be some discourse on how the millions of dollars that are being poured into Haiti will be spent? And at least a slight reprimand for the conditions prior to the earthquake? Some kind of inquisition? Something like this?:
Dear Haitians –
First of all, kudos on developing the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Your commitment to human rights, infrastructure, and birth control should be applauded.
As we prepare to assist you in this difficult time, a polite request: If it's possible, could you not re-build your island home in the image of its predecessor? Could you not resort to the creation of flimsy shanty- and shack-towns? And could some of you maybe use a condom once in a while?
Sincerely,
The Rest of the World
How this former basketball player can sit around comparing the people of Haiti, who, by the way, were hit with a severe natural disaster, to "homeless men on the street," is both insensitive and insulting. Are people so removed from humanity that basic suffering is tossed off in ignorant rants?
With the onslaught of comments from Pat Robertson, Rush Limbaugh, Bill Clinton, (South Carolina Lt. Governor) Andre Bauer and even Harry Reid, as of late, it seems as though folks really don't give a damn what they say and how they say it. I guess in this time of having a black president, folks are feeling gangsta. In other words, while there are some people in this country who may have always felt a particular way about so-called minorities, immigrants and the poor, now it just seems like undeclared open season to vent on all of those aforementioned groups, without regard for cataclysmic events, facts or even a modicum of understanding of history.
While Shirley is quick to give "kudos" to Haiti for "developing the poorest country," I say, Kudos to ESPN for not wasting any time and relieving Shirley of his paycheck in real time. Even if he can never comprehend the vitrolic, hateful implications of his statements, I hope that one day he gets a good whiff of hardship and sees what it feels like to be insulted in his time of need.
By the way, Shirley, the people of Haiti don't need your money, but you clearly do now that you are out of a job. ESPN had this to say:
"The views he expressed on another site of course do not at all reflect our company's views on the Haiti relief efforts. He will no longer contribute to ESPN."
Amen.

When will everyone realize the U.S. is no longer RICH? That time passed long ago. As for Haiti, you might as well burn your money rather than send it there. The U.S. has pumped 1.4 billion dollars into that cesspool in recent years and not one thing has improved. Haitians still have an average of 5 children, still dump their trash in the waterways, and 225,000 Haitian children are still enslaved to the "wealthy" Haitians (Haitians with haitian slaves? Nice, hunh?). I read today that the Haitians are now complaining that all they're getting to eat is rice. Rather than thanking the American taxpayers for preventing them from literally starving to death, they are b#$*ing because they aren't getting more than rice. Haiti is a cancer upon the earth and needs to be left to rot.

It's not so much the color - it's the culture of blacks that people don't understand.
Every inner city in America looks like Haiti after the earthquake. Neighborhoods that were once pristeen and lovely, are totally demolished after blacks have moved in. Countries that money has been sent to since I was a little girl = putting money in jars at school for African babies - has done nothing to make the situation better.
My mother used to tell me I needed to prove myself and guard my reputation if I wanted respect in the world. That's the advice I give to blacks everywhere. People will respect you when you respect others and property. There's a terrible "give-me-a-hand-out" mentality in the black culture that is getting really old already.
When Katrina hit New Orleans, I didn't see the blacks pull themselves up and clean the city. They waited for the "give-me" thing. In New York, people were digging deep & dying to clear the rubble from Ground zero. It's a culture thing. Someone is always supposed to be helping the blacks - and that's where the animosity comes in.
Stop getting offended and stop asking for things -and you will receive them. Do it yourself - raise kids that aren't thugs - and stop expecting things.
That's freedom.

SORRY Mr PAUL SHERLEY, IF U REALLY HAVE IN MIND TO USED HISTORY TO JUDGE HAITIAN PEOPLE, HISTORY ITSELF, WOULD MAKE YOUR COMMENT SMARTY DIFFERENT. THEREFORE, WOULD U HAPPEN TO KNOW THAT CHICAGO BASICALLY BUILT IN THE 16TH CENTURY BY A BAIN CAME FROM HAITI, IN THE NAME OF JEAN BATISTE DE SABLE; THAT'S THE REASON WHY IT'S ALWAYS BETTER TO BE INFORMED BEFORE SPECULATING ABOVE ALL ON SOME HIGHER ISSUES THAN YOUR BRAIN. AS SAID EPICHARMUS 450 BC, "A WISE MAN MUST BE WISE BEFORE ACTING OR SAYING, NOT AFTER." JUST BEFORE YOUR COMMENT, I WD NEVER BELIEVE THAT A SPORT CAREER PERSON CAN BE SO HARDED-HEART. BUT THE DIFFERENCE HAS BEEN SHOWN BY SO MANY GREAT HEART HUMAIN BEINGS WHO KNOW THAT THE MOTHER NATURE HAS NOT SKIN. PERHAPS IT MAY HAVE "CATEGORY, OH-YES! CATEGORY FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT BELIEVE IN LIFE WHICH CONTAINS A SEVERE MOTHOD FOR THE HARDED-HEART FOLKS OF UR TYPE!!!

He does have a small but real point! And I'll take it to the next step! How do we know the money we donate to various place is getting there? And not in someones pocket? So then the people of Haiti will be no better off if the aide does not reach them. And it's not like they were striding to be or get better. Getting to the USA was the most they inspired to do.. So lets make sure the money gets where it is suppose to.. But will it really make the people of Haiti want to be more or better?? That is the question???

If a little research is done, you may come to find out that Haiti was founded by the Americans and the French (just like how other bloggers preceeding me have stated) and quite some time ago, when the country was formed, it was actually quite properous. However, it is actually our [America's] fault that the economic status and mortality rate is poor. If Shirley didn't want to donate, than don't donate. There are plenty of other people out there who will. America went into Haiti so quick to help because we wanted to make up for our delay to the asian tsunami and our own disaster, Katrina. WE WANTED TO GIVE A BETTER PERCEPTION OF OUR COUNTRY TO THE WORLD! So of course we're gonna go into Haiti quickly. However, why can't we take a good look at ourselves though? Why does one of the richest nation's in the world rank 30 something in the WORLD (as of 23 Nov 09) for infant mortaltiy but be able spend close to 1,000,000,000,000...yes...TRILLION dollars (costofwar.com) in a war? I know things are much more complicated than this but can't we fall out of a country that obviously doesn't need us anymore? Is there something wrong with this picture?

SORRY Mr. PAUL SHERLEY, WHETHER U WOULD HAVE IN MIND TO USE HISTORY TO JUDGE HAITIAN PEOPLE, BUT HISTORY ITSELF SHOULD SMARTLY CORRECT YOUR STATEMENT. THEREFORE, WOULD U HAPPEN TO KNOW THAT CHICAGO WAS BASICALLY BUILT IN THE 16TH CENTURY BY A "CABESA" CAME FROM HAITI, IN THE NAME OF JEAN BATISTE DE SABLE; THEN, ON TOP OF THAT, AS THE FIRST INDEPENDENT COLORED NATION, THEY BROUGHT HELP FOR FREEDOM TO SO MANY COUNTRIES AROUND THE CENTRAL AND NORTH AMERICA, WHERE THEIR BLOOD RAN INTO SOME RIVERS OF YOUR DEED LAND? THAT'S THE REASON WHY IT'S ALWAYS BETTER TO BE INFORMED BEFORE SPECULATING ON THE HIGH ISSUES OVER YOUR BRAIN. AS SAID EPICHARMUS 450 BC, "A WISE MAN MUST BE WISE BEFORE ACTING OR SAYING, NOT AFTER." OBVIOUSLY, JUST BEFORE YOUR STATEMENT, I WOULD NEVER REALIZE THAT A SPORT CARRER PERSON CAN HAVE SUCH HEARDED-HEART. BUT TRUST THIS MOMENTUM, THE DIFFERENCE WAS SHOWN BY THE GREAT REAL HUMAN BEINGS ALL OVER THE WORLD WHO DEEPLY KNOW THE MOTHER NATURE HAS NO S-K-I-N. PERHARPS IT MAY HAVE CATEGORIES, OH YES, Sr! CATEGORIES FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT BELIEVE IN LIFE WHICH CONTAINS A SEVERE METHOD FOR THE HARDED-HEART FOLKS OF YOUR TYPE. ON THE OTHER HAND, I REALLY DO NOT KNOW IN WHAT LANGUAGE TO BE GRATEFUL TOWARD ALL WHO ARE STILL HELPING HAITI. GBA!!!
