Woman Gives 1-Year-Old Grandchild Drugs in Hopes of Keeping Child's Parents from Divorcing

Terri Chilton, 41, fed her year-old grandchild blood thinners, which caused the baby to bleed profusely from her mouth and nose. The child also bled continuously from two minor scratches that were on her body. The Missouri woman devised a plan to sicken the child so that her parents would care for her, stay together and not wind up in divorce court.

Chilton, who was distraught over the fact that her daughter and husband were in the throes of a divorce, did not want them to break up and would stop at nothing to keep this from happening.

According to police reports, Chilton allegedly had been drugging the child over a two week period, from December 28 until January 12. The conniving granny wanted the baby's parents to believe that their child had ingested rat poison. Chilton had convinced herself that if the child suddenly felt ill, her parents would have no other recourse but to stay together for the child's well-being.

Blood thinners or anti-coagulants are typically used to keep blood from clotting. In children, blood thinners can increase the risk of bleeding.

Chilton was charged with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child but released on bond over the weekend.

It is still not known if the baby will suffer from long-term organ damage.
