So now we find out that there never was an orphanage in the Dominican Republic and Laura Silsby (above, giving thumbs up), the leader of this New Life Children's Refuge, faces a number of legal cases back at home in Idaho. Silsby and her nine cohorts have been charged with kidnapping by a Haitian magistrate.
The Americans, most members of two Idaho churches, said they were rescuing abandoned children and orphans from a nation that UNICEF says had 380,000 even before the catastrophic Jan. 12 quake.
But at least two-thirds of the children, who range in age from 2 to 12, have parents who gave them away because they said the Americans promised the children a better life.
The investigating judge, who interviewed the missionaries Tuesday and Wednesday, found sufficient evidence to charge them for trying to take the children across the border in to the Dominican Republic on Jan. 29 without documentation, (defense attorney for the Americans) Edwin Coq said.
Each was charged with one count of kidnapping, which carries a sentence of five to 15 years in prison, and one of criminal association, punishable by three to nine years. Coq said the case would be assigned a judge and a verdict could take three months. Source: 10 Americans charged in Haiti with kidnapping, Associated Press
According to press accounts, there is testimony that Laura Silsby was explicitly told that certain documents were needed before transporting the children out of Haiti. Further, Silsby lied about the children being orphans and Silsby lied about there being an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. Silsby had negotiated to rent hotel rooms to house the children and the adults tending to them.
The Dominican consul in Haiti, Carlos Castillo, told the AP on Thursday that the day the Americans departed for the border, Silsby visited him and said he had a document from Dominican migration officials authorizing her to extract the children from Haiti.
Castillo said he warned Silsby that if she lacked adoption papers signed by the appropriate Haitian officials her mission would be considered child trafficking. "We were very specific," he said.
Back home in Idaho, Silsby faces questions about her business practices. As many as nine unpaid wage claims by employees of PersonalShopper.com, the online shopping business she founded and for which she is listed as CEO. One of those claims alleges the company owes the employee more than $22,000.
A Roman Catholic official in the Dominican Republic, meanwhile, told the AP that Silsby had agreed to rent 45 rooms at a former hotel owned by the Church in Cabarete, a northern beach resort.
Silsby agreed to rent the rooms for $7,000 a month and solicited a list of required repairs, said Jose Hidalgo, the real estate agent who brokered the deal. Source: 10 Americans charged in Haiti with kidnapping, Associated Press
Hmmm...could it be that Laura Silsby needed to raise some cash to deal with the legal claims against her and jumped at the chance to take advantage of some poor Haitian children and their parents to get paid - i.e. raise donations? That's how I see it. We'll soon see if Silsby proves me wrong.

What I find amazing, is how many of you commenting on these stories, who can't spell and commit so many grammatical errors. Please if you must comment, do so intelligently and with proper prose and words.
Our nation is in trouble, when adults can't even write properly.
How can we teach our kids when we ourselves need lessons badly.

After reading the comments on black voices I truly believe that all white people should withdraw from Haiti. Let the black people of Black Voices take care of them. No good deed goes unpunished! African first American second and that is the way it will always be! vertue.... please explain what the slaves sweat and death had to do with the growth of this nation. Are you saying that with out black slavery this country would have collapsed? Take a look around you the news the tv the crime rate the dispair. The biggest mastake ever made was to bring african slaves to this country. The white mans burden will become the demise of this great country. I come to this conclusion from the comments of this forum>

I have a life "Mike SCUM OF THE EARTH"! It's "DimePiece" disrespectful JACKAL! Your sorry behind has never gotten as close to a real "DimePiece" and you will never will! It's not my FAULT? I did my part of helping by giving donations and I'm going to keep on giving donations to people in Haiti and to my country where I live U.S.! So what the hell are you on my AZZ about? I bet you never made any donations in your sorry AZZ LIFE! These Missionaries were wrong and DIDN'T want to follow proper procedures! LOOK, I don't give a damn if the Missionaries were white, black, yellow, green, whatever WHAT'S WRONG IS WRONG!
The people that were in the process of adopting knew Ms. Laura LYING Whatever, and said to her that she was going about it the WRONG WAY and would get caught! I hope they all get the MAX of 15 YEARS! Just like your behind should get the MAX OF 15 YEARS in JAIL for not focusing on the BLOGS by replying back to MWA with that DUMB ISH! You could be a better INDIVIDUAL if you would focus your AZZ on the blogs, but that would be IMPOSSIBLE! Oh, by the way the parents needed help for their children that they couldn't feed, cloth, and have a place to stay, they didn't want them to starve, and was promised by these Missionaries that they would take good care of them and that the parents would be able to visit them when they were able in "Dominican Republic"? There was no PLACE! The Missionaries plan was to bring those orphans to the states! So that they could do their TRAFFICING! So don't get it TWISTED!
It's the lying Missionaries fault for putting such lies in Haitian parents head and making promises that they would be able to visit their children NEARBY! No matter what color you are, people are helping by donating, volunteering, ect... This is affecting the whole world! I'm sure if there was a disaster where you lived everybody would try, and I did say TRY to help your sorry AZZ! You have a serious problem and so hung up on MWA every time I get on here! You need to FOUCS on the MAIN ISSUES and LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE!
HOW U DO?
Right back @ your sorry AZZ! :-(

The comments regarding this issue are made by diverse citizens on line. We are not sure of the ethnicity of the writers. Let us not group a people together by the responses made. Let us take the responses and learn, grow and become better huanitarians. I am a Black respondent. To God Be the Glory.

For me the point is that trafficking in children ( using them as a commodity ) has been rampant in Haiti and other 3rd world countries for years. For that reason a moratorium on removing children from Haiti was put in place to protect the children and their families from human trafficking. There is a lot of money to be made in child adoptions, Many of these parents were not told the children were going to be placed for adoption. Instead they were told that the children were merely being removed to a better situation. A truly humanitarian effort would have centered on maintaining the family to keep them together. If this womans motives were without ulterior motives why did she move so quickly to remove the children. Selling 33 children into adoption would have made a tidy sum of money. Was this woman using the tragedy in Haiti for her own benefit ? Swooping down to Haiti and scooping up children off the street for financial reasons.
I am white. I am appalled at this woman's sense of being above the law. The moratorium was put in place to protect the children of haiti from people such as this. No matter what her motives are she violated the law and illegally removed these children. The question now is why ?

The story states that before the earthquake there were 380,000 orphans in Haiti, out of how many children, maybe 1 and a half million? how is that possible? What kind of people live in Haiti? 1 in 4 children in Haiti are orphans? What was the Haiti gov doing about the orphans before the quake? Doesn't seem like much. 10 Americans try to save 33 of these children and they get arrested? Ever think maybe the reason was that in order to get the proper paperwork, you first have to give a whole lot of bribes? That cant possibly be the case because the Haitian gov isn't know for being corrupt, are they? I would put more trust in those 10 American, before any Haitian official. Bottom line, thousands of American are helping in Haiti and we have given millions of $, but the Haitian gov still couldn't let theses kid go w/o get more money.
