In a story that is becoming all too familiar these days, a man was recently exonerated by DNA evidence for a crime he was convicted of 33 years ago. Freddie Peacock, 60, got the news at a hearing in Rochester, New York, on Thursday. The good news came 28 years after he was released on parole for an alleged raping of a Rochester woman in 1976.
The exoneration came from the work of The Innocence Project, affiliated with the Cardozo School of Law. The Project's co-director, Peter Neufeld, was in court with Peacock and his attorneys when the judgment was handed down.
Peacock, who is mentally ill, told the officers that he'd been hospitalized for mental illness; however, the officers continued to interrogate Peacock until he confessed. He was given 20 years in prison and released on parole in 1982.
Most interesting about Peacock's case is that he was badgered by police until he simply said, "I did it," without having any knowledge of how, when or where he committed the crime. This case is disturbing for a number of reasons. We also know that Peacock's case is not the only such case in the country, and there are thousands of other questionable cases that have never been challenged by the Innocence Project, leaving innocent men and women behind bars for crimes they did not commit. Of tremendous concern is the fact that many of these men and women are African American, leaving black families to struggle without the heads of households present to raise their children.
Here are some quick thoughts:
1) Mr. Peacock and his family should be compensated: Any wrongfully convicted American who spends more than a year in prison should receive $10 million dollars in cash from the federal government. If we can bail out the bankers, we can also afford to bail out those who are falsely accused and arrested. You can't replace the time someone loses for being in prison when they didn't commit a crime. Going to prison is a horrible and traumatic experience.
2) Officers and prosecutors involved in the case should be put on trial: The idea that this man can present a confession that has no details or other evidence is unbelievable. Clearly, the prosecutors and officers involved in this crime are guilty of the worst forms of corruption and unethical behavior. I am not sure why we believe that they should be held above the punishments thrust upon the defendants whose lives they've chosen to carelessly destroy.
3) The federal government should dramatically expand funding for the Innocence Project: If the Innocence Project is finding so many people who were falsely convicted, there are undoubtedly many more. The federal government should allocate billions to providing DNA testing to any defendant who requests it. Defendants should be IMMEDIATELY released from prison if it is found that their DNA does not match that of the defendant at the scene of the crime. We should not let laws and systems get in the way of doing what is just.
4) Any small amount of time in prison can destroy your life: I have a relative who went to prison for only two years at the age of 17. He is now a 46-year-old man who cannot psychologically overcome the horrible things that happened to him during his time in the penitentiary. If any innocent man or woman is sent to prison for any amount of time, we should all be deeply concerned and someone should pay a very serious price for delivering such a horrible injustice.
I long for the day when cases like Freddie Peacock receive the outrage that they deserve. This should not be happening in America, but it still happens every single day.

Our work in the community has been to support those in the correction facilities and provide human services to ex-offenders in the community. Your article raises our consciousness of the variables that place youth and adults in the modern day slavery called the Department of Corrections. Thank you for your scholarship and advocacy.

All black people do is cry cry cry cry cry cry. This has nothing to do with DNA. It has to do with slavery and stupidity. Do you really think that, the system is unaware of the injustices and the unfair treatment of not just blacks but anyone that is poor or middle class; which represents 88% of black America?
The truth is the system can do what ever it wants to do to you. Like a bunch of sheep you sit around and wait for the next one to get slaughtered You been sleeping or should I say sheeping for 2000 years. Blacks went from Pyramids, diamonds and gold to caves and owning nothing. You have been robbed and enslaved! You and all of Africa give it all away for nothing..
Why do I say that? Because no matter what injustice happens to you as a group: you continue to work for the white man, you continue, to buy his food, wear his clothing, drive his cars, drive him to work, clean the court houses, that he builds and a manufacture the rope that he is going to put around your neck.
Blacks are slaves! Blacks are the white mans slaves. Black Judges, cops, politicians, news casters, get paid by the white man to keep their mouths shut and keep you nigs in line. You got a black President. He isn’t changing nothing, until every black person falls dead on their a##. Nothing until 70% of the group looses their land and their wealth. Blacks are a target. Africa is a target. I don't see any cars being imported from Africa. Africa makes cars that get 100 miles to the gallon. But they are not coming to this country. Even the bananas that come from Africa the white man puts his name on it before they are imported into America.
I’m I my brother’s keeper?
No you are not!! You are a failure. Black Americans do not buy black! Look at the clothes you have on right now. I bet everything you got on is made by the white man. Blacks have zero leverage, other than rioting; as they did after the Rodney King verdict. Black on black crime is the only thing that blacks manufacture. What is black on black crime???? The very same companies, radio stations and news papers, that persecute blacks, day in and day out; Blacks continue to support. You buy their products and you support all of their vendors. If black people stopped supporting this system, that is killing them, it would change. In most cases you need to quit your jobs and start working for yourself. You blacks in high places need to stand up or get on the back of the bus were you belong.
The system is not going to change. Because: you can always get a black, to do some dumb sh@t, for pennies on the dollar. That’s what a slave is. You woman can dye your hair blond, you guys can get a job making 300k but you are still a slave with a job. You are a sell out! Stop blaming the white man. You already know his game. It’s not going to change.
If you really want to know Justice. Or, conversely! If you really want to see injustice; go look in the mirror. Today you are a born again sucker.

If your interest is the truth, you have succeeded in contradicting yourself. The most important thing in life is the truth. EVERYTHING depends on it. Change your signature, you dunce.

The white man will pay and already is for his hatred toward blacks. Whenever a person raises his guard and suspicion to one person or group.. he must lower it to another. Therefore the one who is suspicious becomes more vulnerable to attacks from those he is not watching. An enemy he is unaware of or not paying attention to at the moment can deal him great injury because of this. We should be glad to be decoys for the true enemies of the white man. The white man will be dealt great blows soon from those they don't consider enemies or from ones they consider less of a threat.

The article failed to mention the female rape victim. She falsely accused him and it happens too much.
