Update: 2/16/10, 10:41 a.m.: Amy Bishop's husband, James Anderson, told investigators that he and his wife were firing guns at the shooting range shortly before she fired on her colleagues at the University. Joseph Ng, a survivor of the shooting rampage, also told investigators that the faculty meeting, where the incident occurred, initially appeared routine enough for him to be working on his manuscript before the bloodshed. Get more details here.
Update: 2/15/10, 10:05 a.m.: Police re-open investigations into Amy Bishop's violent past.
Professor Amy Bishop, 42, recently shot and killed three of her colleagues in the Biology Department at the University of Alabama-Huntsville. The professor is charged with capital murder and more charges are likely. She could face the death penalty if convicted.
Watch the latest developments of the case here:
"She began to talk about her problems getting tenure in a very forceful and animated way, saying it was unfair," an anonymous source said.
As Bishop was led away, she was asked by a reporter what happened. "It didn't happen. ... They are still alive," she said in a low voice, shaking her head.
This is a terrible tragedy, but perhaps there is something we can learn from this. There are three thoughts I have as we analyze the shooting at the University of Alabama-Huntsville and Amy Bishop's alleged behavior:
1) According to reports I've received, two of the professors Bishop killed were black: This is not to say that the individuals were targeted for being black, but it certainly makes one wonder if race was a factor in this shooting. Again, there is not enough evidence to say that this is the case.
2) Amy Bishop shot her brother in 1986: Although the original shooting was an accident, the case has been recommended for additional investigation. If it is indeed the case that she shot her brother deliberately, this might argue that Bishop had a propensity toward violence already. Her erratic behavior may have been a warning sign to other faculty that she needed to be removed from the department.
3) Amy Bishop's issues with tenure are not uncommon: There have been scores of cases in the past of graduate students or faculty engaging in violent acts as a result of the stresses of academia. The tenure process is incredibly ambiguous and politicized, leading to some faculty even losing their sanity. Black scholars are exposed to the challenges of tenure more than anyone, since we are different, and being different is not rewarded in academia. While I am not one to say that Amy Bishop did or did not deserve tenure, it is easy to wonder if this Harvard-educated scholar was good enough to meet the standards of University of Alabama-Huntsville. The tenure process is often a non-transparent affair in which dirty tricks are played behind closed doors (I've seen some doozies, I assure you). People take care of their friends and use tenure as a way to get rid of their enemies, thus escalating the amount of hostility in many academic departments across America.
Of course, Amy Bishop's challenges with tenure do not justify her alleged behavior. At the same time, the severe mental anguish caused by an ultimately unfair set of policies and practices should be reviewed and reconsidered by us all. I was personally denied tenure for what many felt to be unjust political reasons (no black man has ever been recommended for tenure by my business school - Syracuse University - in more than 100 years of operating history), so I know the stress of the process firsthand. Personally, I was lucky to have obtained the kind of support which allowed me to detach from the petty politics of those around me (Rev. Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Michael Eric Dyson and Dr. Julianne Malveaux came to support me), but there are many other scholars who invest their lives in to this process and don't have the support they need to ensure a level playing field. The lifelong investment in the tenure process can often lead to unhealthy reactions to cheap political tricks that keep qualified scholars from getting the rewards they deserve. Excluding the shooting by Professor Amy Bishop (which none of us can condone), I can also point to other cases of campus violence that resulted directly from either tenure denials, unapproved dissertations, etc. While we have the right to decide who gets hired and fired, "business as usual" in academia often puts scholars in the uncomfortable position of either having their lives inexplicably altered or being forced to destroy the life of someone who has dedicated their life to academic success. The potential for volatile behavior becomes quite high under these circumstances.
In order to deal with the threat of workplace violence, academia needs additional oversight. We need independent, outside entities to review every inch of the tenure and hiring process to ensure that the rules are being applied fairly. Black scholars should be especially diligent in pushing for such advocacy, in large part because we are the ones who are most victimized by unjust tenure denials every year. Additionally, it is the absolute fear of this academic terrorism (where people destroy your career and give you no recourse to respond) which causes us to lose our academic souls. Instead of doing good scholarly work to help our communities, we spend years hiding quietly and humbly in the intellectual shadows (biding our time) in hopes that our lifelong quest for tenure is not disrupted by a racist holding a grudge.
Obviously, Amy Bishop has some psychological issues, so her response to the academic environment was ultimately an unhealthy one. At the same time, a part of me wonders if this incident would have occurred had Dr. Bishop felt that she had some kind of recourse to air her grievances. Perhaps if she'd felt that she were getting a truly unbiased appeal, she would not have believed her back to be against the wall. Given that her husband, also a highly trained scholar, is considered a "person of interest," we can see just how deep the resentment went within her family.
"Universities tend to string it out without resolution, tolerate too much and to have a cumbersome decision process that endangers the comfort of many and the safety of some," said Dr. Park Dietz, who is president of Threat Assessment Group Inc., a Newport Beach, Calif.-based violence prevention firm.
It is possible that if Dr. Amy Bishop felt that she had access to unbiased options, I would argue that she may not have chosen to possibly spend the rest of her life in prison. I assume that resorting to violence was the last option for this hard-working, Harvard-educated scholar, since she'd rationally chosen to appeal her original tenure decision. As universities reconsider their responses to workplace violence, we must remind ourselves that we cannot toy with the livelihoods of employees without running the risk of people getting hurt. The University of Alabama Huntsville shooting was not, to be honest, as isolated of an instance as we might think. While actual violence may be rare, the potential for violence is always around us. The focus should not only be our collective outrage at Amy Bishop's highly inappropriate behavior, we've also got to be smart and courageous enough to challenge the tenure process itself.

THE ISSUE HERE IS NOT TENURE AS SOME OF YOU ARE SAYING. THE ISSUE HERE IS THIS IS A CRAZY WHITE WOMAN WHO KILLED THREE PEOPLE AND WOUNDED OTHERS.
MANY PEOPLE HAVE ISSUES ON THEIR JOB, PROMOTIONS THEY DID NOT GET, STRESS, TOO MUCH WORK ETC.
BUT NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND KILLS SOMEONE BECAUSE OF IT. MAYBE THEY TAKE A COUPLE OF DAYS OFF....TO RELIEVE STRESS BUT THEY DON'T KILL SOMEONE.
THIS NUT SHOT HER BROTHER AND YEARS LATER KILLED THREE PEOPLE.
THE ISSUE IS NOT TENURE THE ISSUE IS WHY ARE WHITE PEOPLE GOING CRAZY.

**Highest Ranked Of course people of ALL races are capable of violent crime.***
This is true and has been long since been verified within every race all over the world.
***But young black males make up less than 5% of the population.***
According to what’s reported, but remember, there are black immigrants, Male and Female alike, who after obtaining their citizenship checks off “WHITE” and or “OTHER” as their nationality on the census report. Although they’re visually BLACK, they don’t IDENTIFY THEMSELVES as such, which makes the census report you’re relying on, INACCURATE!
***Do they commit less than 5% of the violent crime?***
YES THEY DO!, but unlike whites, they’re more likely tried and convicted for it!.
If you don’t believe that, simply attend a courtroom of your choice and OBSERVE the level of crimes committed by whites to the blacks AND the intensity of the convictions according to the SKIN COLOR of the criminal perpetrators.
I have PERSONALLY sat in a courtroom for a parking ticket dispute and was amazed at the number of whites who were there after MULTIPLE offenses of which neither offense were they arrested for. Many of whom reportedly received multiple warning for the same violations BEFORE finally paying an actual fine. This was OBSERVED while watching blacks get escorted in handcuffs for what was learned during their hearing as a first offense, in other words, PLACED UNDER ARREST on their first offense compared to whites getting arrested AFTER multiples offenses. If whites were equally punished as black are, it would have been correctly reported as multiple offenses to the one done by blacks, rather than their multiple offenses being TREATED as a first offense equal to that of blacks.
I’ve WATCHED the courts SEAL and EXPUNGE crimes done by white males/females as to not INJURE HIS/HER COLLEGE CAREERS. I couldn’t believe my ears. Yet alone white males being given “Court Ordered Restitution” and assigned to “Community Services” to pay back large sums of money they’ve stolen, while blacks are instead imprisoned and more.
Even the majority of blacks that are in prison aren’t there for crimes as heinous as the way you and your white media demeaningly makes it sound. They’re there for mere POSSESSION OF CRACK/COCAINE when their cases are evaluated. And since AFTER whites delivered it TO the black neighborhoods and lay waited for the addictions to take hold, THEN created a law that made it a FELONY to have even a small quantity of crack/cocaine in possession. And this is aside from crooked cops planting it on black men just to endure the pleasure of locking him up.
Blacks caught with a few rocks in their pockets were treated a lot worst than whites caught with a boatloads off shore. –Go Figure!
But, unsurprisingly, Methamphetamine, a primary narcotics choice of drugs for white males/females, didn’t have as equally harsh a sentence. –Go figure!
(that assuming they’re even arrested when caught!)
But blacks merely possessing crack/cocaine were grounds for imprisonment and coupled with being products of instituted poverty and therefore selling drugs being most fast and efficient way to put food on the table and made accessible/replenished, YES, they would fill the prison system on THAT ALONE! But it was never always that way until the like of YOU intervened.
Crack cocaine was an IMPORTED DRUG but later altered BY THE GOVERNMENT so that its effects would be amplified upon the melanin of blacks.
Cocaine was Engineered TO BE ADDICTING FOR BLACKS because of the way it interacts with the melanin molecules whereby it actually confuses it and becomes absorbed as to cause AMPLIFIED REACTION and ADDICTION!
Ironically, the IMPORTATION of illegal drugs INTO the black stream was the TURNING POINT for blacks to become so addicted to YOUR satanic powder, that those of YOUR ILK had a field day packing them into prisons. “Institutional Slavery”
But this is only a small part of the racial bias of a fundamentally racist system and the iniquities of those of YOUR ILK that helped propel the crimes you now step back and point a finger at. The role your race played that lead to that you now treat as self inflicted is as wrong as your bastardizing all the facts just to make it fit what you want to believe or was taught.
***No, they don't...and THAT'S the problem.***
and THAT’S NOT THE PROBLEM! That’s YOUR EXCUSE TO ESCAPE from coming to terms of the realization that what you’re seeing is nothing more than the products of your own iniquities and then the likes of you kind go accusing those you call you out on your behavior as “Looking For Something To Blame” but that cheap evasive remark your kind mechanically bottom-out on, for your last line of defense, doesn’t make the facts of what you’ve done, to just GO AWAY!
If your kind hadn’t did what all the devilishness of what your own history books unwittingly testifies and if all of what you complain about yet occurred, then you need not point out that would be obviously self evident. But as it stands, your kind WERE in involved and played as accomplices to the facts.
These aren’t excuses, these are FACTS straight out of the history books members of YOUR RACE WROTE! To deny any of it would be to deny your OWN history! Are you denying your own history?
But fortunately, blacks ARE recovering and through the scorns from the likes of you, they’re also succeeding!
Looks like you’re running out of candidates to dumb-down so that YOU can have something to feel better THAN.
***We can continue to take the lazy and stupid path of blaming the white man for everything, or we can step up and take charge of our present and our future.***
What stupid about your own words in this paragraph? it is laced with contradictions!
How can blacks “Get off the so-called Lazy Path of Blaming whites for everything” when every time blacks make the attempt, they’re REMINDED by whites of the bad things white do to cause the problems those same whites mocks blacks for blaming them for?
WE got blacks who believe, demonstrates and succeeded in;
“*step up and take charge of our present and our future*”
(these are your words, right?)
And what happens when blacks just as well assumes such and therefore pursue this “BLAMELESS” path? -They get called MONKEYS, PIMPS, TERRORISTS and more.
Ironically by the SAME WHITES (like you), who beats the hell out the podiums about blacks blaming them for everything in one moment, THEN demonstrates by actions, ALL the reasons why they’re being blamed, in the next moment.
Do you see your own blind stupidity than blacks have been dealing with?
And you don’t think generations of your display of psychotically racist imbecilic behaviors has had ANY ultimate effects?
And what’s worst? Your still doing it! even in these times!
Look at the National racist defamations of the BLACK PRESIDENT.
And of THAT wasn’t convincing enough, Racist attacks were made against the black president’s wife. What’s next, their daughters?
Do you see your own blind stupidity than blacks have been dealing with?
And that’s on a PRESIDENTIAL LEVEL, what the hell you think the average black person is going through out of camera view?
And then with all these acts of “UNPROVOKED” racial hatred like these and more, (From YOUR race), you have the foolish audacity to role-play as a victim?
“Boo-Hoo” blacks are Blaming you?
What a joke!
**No problem has ever been solved by pretending that it doesn't exist..or by making lame excuses for it.**
The only thing that’s truly lame is your continual Bastardizations of the facts.
Idealizing the subject matter and Dumb-Downs for an opening to escape through, doesn’t work anymore. The likes of YOU are NOW KNOWN for what you are and have ALWAYS been.
Furthermore, Excuses are ONLY excuses when they are Exclusive and untrue, NOT Inclusive with facts. But because according to YOUR history, The likes of YOU were VERY inclusive and in the worst ways, given the inhumane acts the likes of you have engaged in.
It’s not surprising that you’d be blind to it, since YOUR FAMILY TREE didn’t suffer broken limbs liken to the ones your race torn off the black trees when it was MOST IMPORTANT to have them. YOUR WHITE TREES HAVE grown and bared the fruits of which has even lead to the likes of YOU!
Blacks didn’t have that luxury, thank the likes of “YOU” very much!
But for those blacks who managed to grow and survive all the racist uprooting, at least their branches have grown well and as their seeds ripen and take upon their own roots, so grows more threes which is happening right now! More and more blacks ARE in facts taking charge but they are still running into the likes of YOUR ILK who are hardened racists and would rather see a Negro DEAD and get AHEAD!
What do you think of those white adult males, employed as police officers, who brutally beaten up a black honor student (due to guilt by association and was racial profiled), is the black honor student NOW just looking got something to blame? That is after the swelling of his face heals so he can see more clearly.
But Demond? if you believe what you typed, as cut and dry as you’re implying while leaving out all the supporting facts of your race’s involvements, then you’re stupid!
And only capitalizing on the bastardized version of the facts.

First, my condoleances to the family of these professors, I am sure their family will miss them, as far as she is concerned the killer, I am sure she must have had some kind of rage fueled by some hidden psychological disorder of some sort for snapping like that, I mean we have waited for generations to have any voice in this country and we are still struggling, why would someone target us black people, we work 1000 times harder and still can't make it, yet we hang in there.

JUST BECAUSE A PERSON GETS SHOT, IT DOESN'T MEAN THEY ARE DEAD. I THINK THE TODAY SHOW SAID THE BROTHER WAS SHOT MORE THAN ONCE. IN OTHER WORDS, IT WAS NO ACCIDENT THAT HE WAS SHOT DEAD.

The real issue here is "Tenure". Years ago, people were satisfied with simply having an honorable job. Now it's all about, "what can I get"...and "How much can I get, while doing as little as possible". Professors are becoming little spoiled children, and like spoiled children, if they don't get it, they act out, in some cases....violently! Tenure used to be given for hard work, performance, and years of outstanding service. Now, it's a honey pot, the "gold" at the end of the rainbow, and nobody wants it more than the slackers, misfits, underachievers, and lazy professors that plague the educational system. and when you add affirmative action to the mix, it only gets worse. Get rid of tenure, and you'll get rid of the politics and ugliness that go with it!!

You make a valid point, however, what's missing the the ramifications of not getting tenure. If you don't get it, the alternative is not having a job at all. Most universities have conditions that limit how long a professor can remain a junior professor etc. Since she didn't get tenure her alternative would be staying there until her time runs out, or tying to get another position elsewhere. If she goes for the latter it will takes years to even be considered for tenure there, plus she would have the stigma of not getting tenure at her previous university. What she did was crazy, but her anger is understandable.
