Federal officials are not planning to pursue charges against the officers involved in the shooting death of Sean Bell, an unarmed young black man who was set to be married the following day. The officers fired more than 50 shots in to a car that held Bell and his friends, when the officers supposedly thought the men were retrieving a gun. No gun was ever recovered.
The officers were undercover, and the shooting sparked outrage throughout the black community.
Prosecutors claim that there was "insufficient evidence" that Bell's civil rights were violated. Three officers were acquitted in 2008, including Michael Oliver, an officer who reloaded his gun while shooting 31 of the 50 shots that went in to the car.
Bell's family and his fiance, Nicole Paultre-Bell, were saddened and disappointed by the decision. They'd asked federal officials to become involved after the original acquittal.
"Why didn't they take a chance and go with a jury," Bell's father, William Bell said. "They say they didn't have enough to go with the evidence. What kind of message are they sending kids? It's open season. They can do what ever they want."
The Rev. Al Sharpton, who has advised the family on the matter, spoke with Attorney General Eric Holder about the incident.
"I expressed to him my extreme disappointment in the decision and our legal advisers saw the evidence and federal jurisdiction differently," Sharpton said in a statement. "We agreed, however, that the family and community must continue to bring a new day in how we deal with police matters and how both community residents and police are protected equally under the law."
What's most interesting about the Sean Bell shooting is that while federal prosecutors are refusing to get involved in the case, there has been no serious explanation to the public regarding why the officers should not be charged. There is no conversation about what avenues of police discretion allow these officers to shoot dozens of bullets at unarmed citizens, reload their guns and continue firing. I want questions answered, and the idea that this case is going to come to an end without any closure for the American people is incredibly disturbing.
My father was a dedicated police officer for 25 years, which gave me an opportunity to see the inside of police work in ways that others cannot. I also speak regularly with civil rights leaders who speak up against police abuses of authority, which occur throughout our nation every single day. I am also a black man, and I've known the fear of police intimidation up close and looked in to the eyes of an angry, arrogant officer who felt that by simply talking back to him, I was somehow "stepping out of my place."
Attorney General Eric Holder has consistently missed opportunities to address the broader problems of black men in the criminal justice system. While African-American families are being consistently destroyed, Eric Holder, President Barack Obama and others are simply focused on keeping their jobs within a system that is (hopefully) not in line with their inner conscience. Only radical action will change the consistent violation of black civil rights taking place within our incredibly flawed system of justice, and our nation must be committed to that action.

Shoot to kill...before they kill you Black Man. They figure we as Black Men have nothing to live for. They are firing their guns at will with no regard for the fact that a HUMAN LIFE is at stake...YES, HUMAN LIFE. Once dead, no one can bring him back. Somebody must be accountable for tragic incident.

What kind of black man says, "...the judge has made his verdict, We're are a nation of laws,...and so we respect his verdict..."? Ans: OBAMA....but every other black man I know says just the opposite. The realize that this was a set up of duplicitious connivance by the legal process. And, Obama knows better. I say vote his sorry ass out of office....for once, a person is in a position to ensure that this type of police corruption does not get swept under the rug and instead, it's the same old song and dance...it's the status quo....F the Police.

Obama said he's not president of Black America but the U.S.A..In this case majority rules. In S.Bell's murder the "Rule of Law" does not apply. The majority does not care about Black life!I am tired of all of these intelligent Blacks understanding our demise, murder of our children, brother and sisters, outrages unemployment, overwhelming incarceration and etc.I have nothing against earning a degree,I did. However if you can understand or agree with Obama's and Holder,s recent responses to the Black community you need to return to elementary school!!!

I am a tall Black male and I've traveled these United States quite a bit and The police are often like a racist gang. I have been stopped while driving and walking, and one arrested and abused physically by police and had no idea why. I filed a lawsuit and by the time of my depositions they lied like you wouldn't believe. The words "Big Black Man" was used so many times in the report,(Not the one from that night, but weeks later) They said I swore at them, pushed them and picked up two female officers and shook them before back up was called to subdue me. It sounds very scary, I wish I was there. None of that happened and there was nothing I could do. I have never been in trouble with the law in my life.
An in house investigation proved that the officers did nothing wrong. I wasn't marandize, and they didn't even say "you're arrested." Just knocked me down from behind and started punching me in my back, handcuffed m, and they made sure that hurt like hell, I got nerve damage afterwards.
If someone knows how to police the police...Please, let me know!

Amazing and very sad that police are immune to our justice system. Go to The Oregonian newspaper web site in Portland Oregon. Just a day ago another black man was shot, in the back, while a police dog was chewing on him. He was distrat due to his younger brother dying. Jesse Jackson was in town and Rv. Al Shartpton was die to arrive also to calm things down. We are so racist in the USA that thinkgs like this can happen and the law doesn't give it a second thought. When will we wake up and change things?

How in the world could there not be enough evidence to convict these officers?? What is wrong with our society, and this picture? When will this 'miscarrige of justice' stop? How many of 'our' young men will we have to lose, before enough is enough? Somebody please tell me the answers?

I agree with you statement--However, Black people, especially Black males do not have to be breaking the law in order to be arrested or shot by the police--IT'S CALLED RACIAL PROFILING. This is something that immediate families need to address through the legal system. Such families of such victims need to unit together and get things changed.

How in the world can they justify, such a horrific act. It is bad enough that our young black males are stereotyped. But, now they are killing them without being penalized. The message is clear. We must do something about this "INJUSTICE"
