I don't know if she tripped over a black cat and broke a mirror while carrying salt, but Angela Martin may just be the unluckiest woman in America.
Martin is one of those hopeful, starry-eyed contestants that audition year after year for "American Idol," hoping for overnight fame and fortune. And unlike most contestants, Martin is actually very talented. She has auditioned three times for the show, and three times she has made it to the much-beloved Hollywood.
However, her trips to Hollywood have consistently ended in disaster.
In 2007, her moving personal story of life with her disabled daughter, coupled with an amazing singing voice, easily won her a spot in American Idol's second round. However, shortly after snagging her first golden ticket to La La Land, her father was murdered by his long-time girlfriend, leaving the young Chicago woman too grief-stricken to compete. She left the competition shortly after his funeral.
On her second try in 2008, she once again sang her way to Hollywood, only to lose her spot thanks to a traffic court summons over an outstanding ticket. She spent six days in jail. Now, with a third and final chance at realizing her dream, tragedy has struck again: Martin's mother was reported missing after Christmas. The 28-year-old's mom, Viola Brown (pictured with her daughter to the left), was going to visit Martin's older sister, after the holidays, but never arrived, according to People.com. On New Year's Eve, her car was found abandoned in a Chicago suburb. The "America's Most Wanted" show did a report on Viola Martin's disappearance Jan. 23.
Angela Martin's 10-year-old daughter has Rett syndrome and has been having "multiple seizures a day," Angela told People.
And to top off this heartbreaking tale, Angela was cut this week from "American Idol." She did not make it to the Top 24. Now even a cynical Idol-hater like myself finds it shocking that the producers of "American Idol," knowing this woman's back story and knowing her mother was currently missing, would decide to cut her at this point. You would think they would keep her just for the cliché-overcoming-the-odds-happy-ending. Then they could just wait for the viewers to vote her off. However, sitting in the Kodak Theater, Idol Judge Kara DioGuardi gave her the bad news by telling Martin how strong she was and then told her to pack her stuff. Hey, that's Hollywood. At the age of 28, there will be no more auditions for Martin. She will be ineligible to compete next year. But with every audition bringing tragedy for her, perhaps that's a good thing. I have two words for the unlucky Angela Martin: Jennifer Hudson. People with information about Viola Martin are being asked to call Glenwood police at 708-253-2420 or the "America's Most Wanted" hot line at 800-274-6388.

Read it again...........The reference to Hudson is that she went on 'after' Idol to make a great success of herself. I think they took Angela off way before her time. She deserved better. And I personally don't care what race she is. And while we're on the subject, did everyone take a bitchy pill this morning??? Can't we all just get along???

Hey, there are MANY white folks with similiar sad stories as well. I am sick and tired of only hearing about the "black folks". We are ALL human beings, and the ONLY things that matters to me, is HOW we treat each other. So, lets stop with the black and white bs.

I think the writer meant for Angela Martin not to be discouraged because Jennifer Hudson proved that you dont have to make it through the whole Idol process to be successful...

I agree totally. I think that is what the editor was referring to as well. Jennifer Hudson made it fine without winning American Idol and if she follows her dream she may do well too. I think there are girls that should have been cut from the 24 also. The other young girl that got cut that even Siman said was a wrong decision, forgot her name (Shelly?), was better than the last two who were chosen.

This lady has talent and don't need pity to get her in the Top 24. The IDOL judges missed it on this one, especially since singers are in the TOP 24 who forgot the lyrics.

My sorrow/pity for Angela Martin isnt' necessarily because she lost as a whole, but to have to go through this with out the loving arms of either of her parent's to concole her for her loss, is heart breaking.
Angela Martin is a who I would consider to be a "Pioneer Woman". A woman who has and can look life in the face and say "give me what you got, because your NOT gonna break me down", and do what she has to do to get business done, and to do it in a mannerly way.
I'm sure this isn't the last we hear of Angela Martin, and personally, I hope not. It would be nice to see her get picked up wiothout the help of Idol, and go further than she ever expected with Idol.

I agree with you, this girl has talent. I was so glad that Ellen had her on her show and is going to help her get a contract!

Unfortunately, people often don't realize their blessing. Angela's blessing came in the form of the school that is taking care of her special needs child as a result of seeing her on Idol the first year. While she is talented, her life is a mess and the music business requires focus. American Idol is a singing competition and not a who-has-the-saddest-story competition. She can make something out of what she has done if she chooses to, or she can sit back and wait on another show to come along and make her rich and famous without doing any of the work.

Don't be so heartless. Angela has received her blessing. Today on the Ellen Show, Angela was offered a record deal with song written by Kara Dio Gaudi. She as much or more talent than most of the top 24.
