A Southern California mountain that was once named Niggerhead, then Negrohead has just been renamed Ballard Mountain in honor of its first African-American settler, John Ballard.
The fight for the renaming of the controversially named mountain began back in 2005, when Morehouse College history professor Patricia Colman, who had worked for the National Park Service previously, began to research the mountain's history. Professor Colman discovered that Ballard came to Los Angeles in the 1850s and he and his family were the first and only African Americans to have lived in the mountain area during this time.
The Homestead Act of 1862 allowed Ballard, a former slave, to claim the undeveloped land. The 2,031-foot mountain and surrounding land near Mailbu became Niggerhead mountain, when white settlers named the land.

Ballard and his wife, Amanda, were pillars of the Black community in the 19th century and helped to build Los Angeles. Ballard was also a trustee and one of the founding members of the first African Methodist Episcopal Church in L.A.
The mountain's name remained unchanged until the 1960s, when President Lyndon Johnson changed the racial slur to Negrohead.
Ballard lived on his claim until his death in 1905.

Geeeeez!!! better late than never. Perhaps a sporting event or X-Games challenge should be held there in honor of the Ballard family name. Of course some of the proceeds should go towards the United Negro College Fund. I'm from Newnan, GA 'n that's all I have to say about that.

To: Monte Woods (1st comment)...I'm considering moving to Newnan, GA...If you don't mind me asking..is it a nice place to live?...Is it a mixed town?...How is crime there?...thank you...
Now as for this article...I am totally shocked...don't know why but I am...I guess because it's in L.A....not in some boondock backwards town....THE NAME SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHANGED A LONG TIME AGO AND IT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO "NEGRO"....IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHANGED TOTALLY TO SOMETHING ELSE!!!

To Gail: Newnan, Ga is a very cool and laid back city in western central Georgia. I have lived there
most of my life and have experienced both good and bad race relations. No place on earth is perfect, but people can do the best they can to make it a better place for us all. Newnan is my home and I wouldn't change that for nothing or no other place in this world. I wish you the best of luck and hope you "come on down 'n stay while."

For the record, I am an african-american who has heard more than my fair share of N!%#$r Jokes. I feel that the name of the mountain should have been Ballard from the very start, but my sense of humor and the state of California's economy inspired me to remind readers that such a beautiful "peace" of nature has great potential and many blessings yet to offer. "A 'MINE' as well as a mind is a terrible thing to waste."
I will never forget the white people who said, "Don't say that!...it's disrespectful to Monte." When racial remarks slipped out in group conversations. Never forget that one of the hardest things to do is to be able to laugh at one's self...lol..lol...kinda like "You might be a Redneck if...." so to speak.
If my comments were unclear or misunderstood, I deeply apologize to the Ballard family and BV readers. Perhaps someday people of all colors will be able share racial jokes back and forth with equal humor.....then again???????

We just had a family reunion last weekend in Alabama. I saw for the first time that a descendant of ours was recently honored in Santa Monica. We were all excited and a picture was exhibited during the reunion. I was once a resident of San Bernardino CA then I joined the military and moved out to GA. I would like to meet any Ballards from CA or any other state. My email is attached. Take care and God bless.
