Haitian President Predicts 300,000 DeadYesterday, Haitian President Rene Preval said he estimated that 300,000 were dead from the earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12th. While 200,000 bodies were picked up along the streets, Preval says another 100,000 bodies would most likely be found among the rubble that is yet to be removed. Marijuana Use Up in Seniors
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, an increasing number of people, aged 50 and older, are using marijuana for recreation and to relieve some of the discomforts that come with age. The most dramatic shift has happened among those aged 55 to 59, where marijuana use is said to have tripled. [Washington Post]
Governors to Meet with President for Education
President Barack Obama is looking to make America's schools more competitive and productive and is rewarding school systems that exemplify those ideals through his Race to the Top program. The President has pledged $350 million to "state-led partnerships to develop new, state-of-the art assessments aligned to college and career-ready standards." The nation's governor's also have a plan mirroring Obama's expectations and will meet with him today to finalize many of their educational initiatives. [AP]
Workers Make 1,000 Mile Commutes to Keep Jobs
With the auto industry being what it is, those who are still fortunate to be employed by automakers, such as GM, are commuting 1,000 miles or more to keep their families afloat, even though it means family time just on the weekends, a grueling eight-hour daily commute or rented apartments across state lines. The strain on families is dramatic, but with so many unemployed, those who are fortunate enough to keep receiving a check are bending over backward to make the impossible possible. [CBS News]
