Robert Pattinson, the heartthrob from the 'Twilight' series, has upset a few people. I admit that I am probably the only person on earth who has not seen his movie, but there might be a few others who join me after hearing his recent comments about black people.
During an interview with Details magazine, Pattinson sat down with Jenny Lumet, a black journalist, and made some comments that just didn't make any sense. The dialogue between Pattison and Lumet went as follows:
Details: Rob, did you know that every time you say actor or acting you lower your voice to a whisper?
Rob: (He's genuinely startled.) "I do?"
Details: Yes, so quietly it's like you're saying Negro.
Rob: (He laughs, lightens up.) "What if we were acting' like 'Negroes'? Then we'd be f*cked -- we couldn't hear anything. . . ."
Okay, can someone please explain to me what in the &^%$ he was talking about? Either way, I think he could have been equally confusing while using a term other than the word Negro. His handlers may want to coach him on the fact that you can't put a billion-dollar brand on your shoulders and then make careless remarks that people can interpret any way they want. Pattinson needs a lesson on public etiquette, and he needs to apologize immediately.
Similarly, Pattinson's remarks don't necessarily imply that he is a racist. At the very least, the comments do argue that he needs to be taught racial sensitivity. Many young people make silly mistakes like this one, because the adults around them have never taught them how to maintain respect for diversity. Similar to the recent racist incident at the University of California San Diego, the 'Twilight' star may have made his mistake because he's never been taught any better. Either way, Mr. Pattinson needs to be sat down and educated.

get over it!! the bonne mot was a double entendre. oviously the journelist got it and the rest of you didn't. hello the guy is english, different country, different culture, different language, different humor. which by the way is alot more sophisticated than american humor. seems to me those of you so eager to jump on the racist train know little about the world you live in. must everything be subjective???

He's saying that if he says 'acting' quietly and most people would say 'Negro' quietly because of its racist reputation, that the conversation would be inaudible.
There's nothing racist in the statement.

What!??! The interviewer, who is black, tells him that whenever he speaks about "acting" or being and "actor" that he speaks so softly she thinks that what, he is purposely saying it softly as he would say the word negro? How does she make this assumption. Has she heard him in the past referring to blacks as negroes and saying it softly as to not offend? Or is she trying to imply that he is embarrased or upset he is being interviewed by a "negress". How are we to know without knowing why this interviewer would make such an absurd comment. His comments didn't make any sense because the observation by the interviewer made no sense.

Rob and Jenny Lumet (the interviewer) are friends. They met when she was doing script rewrites of Remember Me, the film Rob stars in and co-produced. They worked together on the rewrites. If you read the entire interview, you will see where she talks about their friendship and says nothing but complimentary things about him, from discussing his physical attractiveness to his total lack of Hollywood ego and attitude down to the fact that he was a complete gentleman with her, showing the good manners of a man whose parents took an interest in his upbringing. He remembers, without any need for prompting, what her favorite drink is (Diet Coke) and has it ready for her when she sits down. I truly think it was just a stupid analogy and a poor word choice and that neither side had any hidden agendas or motives. To make things worse, Rob had already drank four pints of strong European beer by the time this little analogy was sprung on him. Fuzzy-headedness didn't help him deflect this interviewer's strange word choice.

Rob is NOT a racist. That is typical media making things up agian. Jenny Lumet from Details magazine is the one that should be questioned for making a rediculous remark that someone who speaks in a low voice makes her think they are saying Negro under their breath. (paranoid much) It was a stupid statement for her to have made. Rob was just trying to respond to it at her level.

If white supremacy didn't exist, his comments wouldn't have sparked such a reaction.
Of course if white supremacy didn't exist, Robert Pattinson wouldn't be an actor to begin with.

If Boyce didn't print these race baiting articles this would be no big deal. Stop claiming race for every little thing. It's like crying wolf, when something really happens, no one will pay attention.
