Singing great Anita Baker barely missed going to jail Friday in a dispute with her ex-husband over music royalties. The 52-year-old Baker found herself in a heated battle with Walter Bridgforth, her ex-husband, over the details of their divorce settlement.
"I'm so happy. ... I have never been in such a position before," Baker said in the hallway outside court. "And we don't intend to ever be in such a position ever again. I just wanna go home, and I'm happy to go home. ... As horrific as it could have been, it was lovely to feel supported, though, on the other end."
Baker was faced with a deadline Wednesday to sign documents that empower court-appointed music contract expert Howard Hertz to obtain information from record labels, regarding how much Baker owed her ex-husband. The deadline passed and Baker still had not signed. This led to the Wayne County Chief Family Court Judge Lita Masini Popke ordering Baker to either show up in court on Friday or go to jail.
Thursday, the judge said Baker had been uncooperative, and Baker said she felt she was being "muzzled." After Baker expressed her stress to the judge about possibly going to jail, Judge Popke replied, "I'm not going to hold you in contempt or send you to jail today."
The judge then told Baker and her attorneys to work with the attorneys of Baker's ex-husband to lay out the language that would be acceptable to all parties. Both sides went in to a jury room and returned to tell the judge that they had reached a deal.
"Miss Baker, I thank you for your cooperation," Popke said. "I apologize for the stress that this obviously put on you, but I think we've reached a very successful conclusion and can move forward."
Baker, who is known for singing songs about love, found herself paying a high price for it. The royalties she is due to pay her ex-husband are due from albums Baker made during her marriage. In her career, Baker has won eight Grammies and had four platinum albums.

Your assumptions about what other people are thinking are erroneous, presumptuous and patronizing. I speak only for myself, even though many friends have stated the same, but I don't believe gold diggers should be reaping the rewards of the labor of someone else simply because they happened to be married to the person at the time they earned the money. If the marriage is over, so is the gravy train. The gender of the gold digger is irrelevant --- a gold digger is a gold digger. The non-custodial parent should pay a reasonable amount for child support of any children born to the marriage. The operative word here is REASONABLE. No one should be paying $10,000 a month child support as some of the gold diggers have managed to get. Child support should be to help with the child's basic needs and some of the child's wants. It is not something that should be used to continue a lavish lifestyle for a gold digging parent.

This is why money marrys money, because some broke fool always has an agenda. She was successful before she met this fool. She should have made him sign a prenup. I remember she said she met him at one of her concerts, he went up to her and asked her out. He had money on the brain then, they were able to stay married for a long enough time and have babies. Don't know if they were happily married nor what ended the divorce, but i'd hate to have to pay some fool i aint even sleeping with no more.

Lawrence, you are making my point, you are not a woman. The law of manhood supercedes a law that encourages demasculation. You should never put yourself in a dependent position. Like my father always say to me when it seem that the weaker sex is taking advantage men."Thats why you are a man" It meant be the head of your household.

My mom told me when I was growing up that Anita Baker's songs were about infidelity. She wanted him, but he belonged to someone else. She got him in the end and I guess these are the consequences. Be careful what you ask for because you may get it.

I would probably be going to jail but not for the same reasons. If a man asked me for a dime I would go to jail for trying my best to hurt him if he didn't help me earn my money.

I am so glad that Anita did no go to jail. She doesnt deserve that type of treatment inspite of her greedy money hungry husband who wants to feed off of her many years of success in the music business. It's sad that this jerk didnt get his own career going.
