In case you didn't know, former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is one of the most highly disgraced politicians in America. He is credited for creating one scandal after another in the mayor's office of a city that has continued to feel the depths of despair and economic ruin. Part of his punishment by the courts was to pay $1 million in restitution to the city of Detroit, along with spending 99 days in jail. He is also forbidden to seek public office again due to his felony convictions.
Reports are that Kilpatrick's troubles may be getting worse, as prosecutors are accusing him of failing to make required restitution payments, all while living a life of luxury.
Reports say that Kilpatrick and his family are living in a rented mansion in Dallas, driving luxury vehicles and spending money on golf outings, fancy restaurants and other amenities. His required monthly restitution payment is $79,011, but he could face arraignment for missing the last payment. A warrant for Kilpatrick's arrest was issued Thursday and then suspended. If the warrant is re-issued, the former mayor could end up in jail once again.
But Kilpatrick is not without his supporters. There are individuals such as respected activist Malik Shabazz who consider themselves among his supporters.
"When history records him, he will be considered, in spite of whatever mistakes he made, a great mayor," said Shabazz.
Kilpatrick is now a software salesperson for Compuware Corporation. He was given $240,000 in loans and a $120,000 per year job shortly after being released from jail in 2009. The arrangements were made by Compuware CEO Peter Karmanos, who was also prominent in Detroit politics before the Kilpatrick scandal. Kilpatrick's new home is a 5,800-square-foot five-bedroom mansion in the Dallas suburb of Southlake.
Kilpatrick's attorneys argue that his lifestyle is not extravagant, but necessary. They claim that he needs to spend money in order to woo clients to sell them software.
In his job, "The clientele he must establish a rapport with are likely to be the privileged and the affluent," said a petition filed with the court on Tuesday. "The deals he must close to fulfill the restitution obligation require considerable time and he is going after sophisticated clients -- burgers and beer at the local bar is not going to be sufficient."
Such is the saga of Kwame Kilpatrick. I have a feeling his adventures aren't over. I have a great deal of respect for Malik Shabazz, but I have a hard time imagining anyone remembering Kilpatrick as a great mayor. In fact, indications from my colleagues in Detroit is that Kilpatrick's alleged excesses, arrogance and lack of discipline are going to make it incredibly difficult for any other thirtysomething to seek the Detroit mayor's office for a very long time. That is unfortunate.

Mr. Boyce,
I agree with you on this one. Kwame is bad news. I followed this case and couldn't believe the madness. Detroit, much LOVE to you. People lunacy is an equal opportunity employer, not relagated to black folks, white folks, red folks, yellow or brown folks. What we have in this country and our culture is a CRISIS in CHARACTER! Tara, Bill Schrier try a little more love!

Kwame reminds me of Obama. When Kwame was running for office, many tried to warn the Black community in Detroit that this guy was a thug and a hustler. But Blacks treated him like a God and said "give him a chance" or "White people are hatin' on Kwame because he's Black". Now the truth has finally been revealed, and Blacks have egg on their faces as usual. Blacks have never showed good judgement when electing politicians, and their living conditions and lack of economic progress is proof of it. You have a "so called" Black President yet, Black unemployment is at it's highest levels. Blacks need to stop voting for "color", and start voting for "representation".

This is such contrived crap I could spit. Shabazz supports his greatness because he is a black man who got away with a gazillion bucks and little to repent or pay back. This damned mayor STOLE money from the citizens of the city of Detroit and wasn't even smart enough to do so without getting caught. He slept with his secretary and created one of the greatest scandals since Profumo in France! Peter Karmanos and all the other boys paid that man even more money to get out of Dodge and you see this as a good thing? Here, take $250,000 and get the hell out of town and don't come back. You are as big a horses ass as all the players... daddy warbucks, mommasan, wifeypooh, girlfriend who couldn't keep her legs together or her mouth shut and all of em for keeping written records... like the damn Nazi's - obsessive compulsive liars and thieves think the rest of the world is stupid. You, Shabazz and every other stupid supporter deserves whatever is left when the city empties out, and it will.

@mackie45
And I guess white's have showed good judgment by voting into office, not just once, but twice mind you, the dumbest president to ever hold office? Under who's administration more crisis occurred than any other president ever in history?
Its not been forgotten the state that the country was in when our beloved President Obama was sworn into office - it was the biggest mess known to man!Yet, we were forewarned that because it took 2 terms, eight years no less, without any real, sane resolutions that got us to this place, it will take maybe even half of that time to get us back on track.
Believe me, it would be easy to look up to the new man walking into this disaster as some type of savior, who would grace the white house with his presence and poof! All would be right again in the world and we've got our respect back and etc.
Not realistic.
Know this though - President Obama would almost have to deliberately taint all that he touches in order to be half as inept as the former president. At the end of this term (or the one following), he would have made great strides in trying to put this jacked-up puzzle back together again. Its virtually impossible for anybody, but especially President Obama, to screw up as badly as Bush.
Remember that, write it down, take a picture - I know you give a hoot.

It seems like people seek the ultimate destruction of any black man who makes a mistake, but we allow white people to "pay for their crimes" however they pay (embarrassment, removal from office, etc.) and move on with life. If PETA and other groups and individuals had their way, Michael Vick would have been jailed for a much longer time, and once he served his time, he would be back in the projects in Newport News. Some people won't be happy if Tiger Woods doesn't lose everything. When are we going to get to the point when we can allow black people (especially black men) to pay for their crimes and not begrudge them success and a sense of normalcy afterward.

Has the NAACP or any other African American organization taken a position on this issue? If so what is it?

Kwame Kilpatrick is my friend and a man of many talents who has lost his way. I grieve for his errors and pray that he will be able to atone for them and make a significant contribution again to the world some day.

You sound like a racist. Incidentally, Kwame's lover wasn't his secretary - she was his chief of staff. and the profumo scandal wasn't in France - it was in the UK.
