Same-Sex Advocates Able to Get Sizable Support from Black D.C. Community

In Washington, D.C., gay and lesbian couples will be able to apply for marriage licenses starting this Wednesday, due to the support they have been able to attain from the black community. In D.C., African Americans are the majority, and same-sex advocates -- as well as anti-gay leaders -- knew that to win support, black churches, colleges and universities were the principle way to go. Same-sex advocates conjured up teachings from Dr. Martin L. King Jr. in order to bring the message of equal rights home. While it was ultimately lawmakers who made the final decision as to whether same-sex couples could marry, getting support from the black D.C. council and community was key. [Black Enterprise]

Obama to Present Revised Health Care Bill Tomorrow

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama will unveil his updated health care proposal. The revised proposal will be most significant for the nine Democrats who appear to be undecided on health care and are said to be awaiting this rendition in order to cast their final vote. Their votes are vital to ultimately getting the Senate's version of health care passed. In addition to appealing to undecided Democrats, Wednesday's version is also expected to employ some Republican measures from the health care summit that occurred last week. [ABC News]

40 Retirees Killed by Tsunami

In a tragic story, 40 retirees, who were said to be enjoying their summer vacation in the resort town of Pelluhue, tried to get to higher ground by boarding a bus in order to escape the impending tsunami that was triggered by the 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile on Saturday. Instead, the retirees witnessed their bus being dragged away by the tsunami, and on Monday, only five bodies were found by rescue workers. [Yahoo News]
